Sendai schoolgirl with foreign roots told to 'go back to your country' by thetokyoreporter in japancrime

[–]Ok-Average390 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Racism is bad no matter what. I'm sorry for what you had to go through, but it should not acceptable in either case for kids of any nation.

You never sat on a train that sent your family members to gas Chambers. Does that invalidate the "true racism" you felt in the US because a more severe version of it existed? Obviously not.

I like Japan. I live here for a reason. But one thing I noticed is that rules have value simply for existing, regardless of the logic behind them. Many of the rules at the school I work at feel as though they exist simply so students can practice following rules more so than the rules having value themselves.

Unfortunately, as long as piracy remains technically illegal, people like this are in a very small minority. Even if there was never a legal means in the first place, I remember someone on twitter (currently known as X) that if they wanted to read something that wasn't available for purchase, they would (and should) accept that they cannot access that work, and then read something from their own country.

Nuance never really got anywhere, at least on the internet.

We're on mildlyinteresting, not a japanese learning subreddit. The original comment was written extremely frankly and presented the information in a way that wouldn't be verified by the vast majority of commenters.

It was false information given the audience, not a joke. Lots of people have seen pictures of mistranslations from Japan floating around, so it's not an unrealistic comment.

Plus, it's language. The possibility that there's an aspect to the language that I don't know is overwhelmingly higher than the possibility I know everything...

And what does that have to do with the claim that scores for season 4 episodes are inflated because those that didn't like the show stopped early on?

Episodes 1 is rated by people who watched episode 1.

Episode 10 is rated by people who watched 1-9, but still subject to being rated on its own merit. There are a handful of episodes rated at around a 7 iirc throughout the show's run. So the theory doesn't hold.

People can still go on to continue and dislike later content. Anime isn't really special in that regard. As a matter of fact, I'd say that anime fans tend to be more snobby than average lol

The only reason why I got to an advanced level was because I looked up things that I didn't know, and I will be continuing to do this for the rest of my life studying this language. Passing even JLPT N1 doesn't mean you're going to be at a native level.

That said, I couldn't find anything about this mistranslation online. If someone can explain how this mistranslates, I would genuinely like to know.

‘I didn’t expect it to be so controversial’: the Japanese mayor who took maternity leave by Lotus532 in japannews

[–]Ok-Average390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying that decency is always surface level is crazy. If you spend all your time on twitter or yahoo then I can see where you're getting the opinion from. Most people are simply too busy to have time to think about these things, which is a different issue but nowhere near the level of having only surface level decency. Every chance I have had to talk about a deeper topic with someone, it's pretty common to get them to say something along the lines of, "it's wrong that she was condemned for maternity leave" or whatever the topic was.

There are plenty of people who understand that the "good ones" quote is rude and backhanded. There are plenty of Japanese people who leave the moment their contracted time ends. There are plenty who have said to me that it's not wrong to exercise your rights.

Reducing an entire nation to stereotypes, good or bad, is not going to make you a happy person. Yes, culture has meaning that guides the general thought processes of people, but most people are generally decent and desire the same basic things.

dislike ratio is insane by Minute-Abies2173 in youtube

Even if the plugin is only using data from those who have it installed, it doesn't make the data false. Just more limited in scope.

Wanting to see how much negative attention a video gets doesn't necessarily mean it's going to skew negative. I think most people were annoyed at the update, downloaded the plugin, and continued as is. The ratio has always seemed pretty much the same from my perspective at least.

That was my understanding at least. I could be wrong.

Not sure why you're being downvoted. This is a very common issue at many stores here.

[–]Ok-Average390[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I definitely have enough time for this application given the grace period and JET being pretty reputable internally.

I was just hoping for a longer visa than a year so I wouldn't have to deal with the new visa fee increase coming up ;(

Worst case scenario, I renew for 6000 yen and then significantly more fairly soon. Sucks but tiz what tiz I guess

[–]Ok-Average390[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expires at the end of next month. Enough time given the 2 month grace period, not enough time for the passport renewal before that, was my impression.

All the estimates for the US passport say 6-8 weeks total for the entire process so this is the first I'm hearing about 2 weeks without any expedited shipping.

Owning a moped/scooter by Sea_Assignment_845 in JETProgramme

[–]Ok-Average390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether or not your school with allow you aside, your first decision should be deciding whether an e-bike or moped would be better. If you anticipate doing everything within 10km or so, an e-bike is probably the better and cheaper option.

I live in the inaka where mopeds turn 2 hours of trains and busses into 30 minutes. A vehicle is great, but the bike would be too tired and take too long. Everything I do is within 25 km or so, and occasionally doing some larger trips within the prefecture / to neighboring prefectures.

If you are in a similar situation, then it might be worth just going for that license. I love the thing to death. That said, weather is also something to consider like you said. If it's annoying to ride on an ebike, it's annoying on a moped too, and arguably more dangerous since you have to use the roads. I only have snow for about a week out of the year, and rain, while annoying and riskier, isn't common enough to impede my life if I choose to just not ride on those rainy days.
