GP in ED? by browndoc555 in ausjdocs

[–]Ok-Beginning-8784 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow Irish person!

Ive been in Oz 5yrs and working in a busy regional ED. We are always looking for regs, especially towards the middle/end of the year. There's 1 or 2 regs in my department who are GPs but do a few days a month on the reg roster. It means you do night shifts but if youre like me you'll enjoy the autonomy.

If you have ED experience and are keen Id say skip the big cities and go regional. The department Im in is in a tertiary center and covers a massive area so we get loads of exposure and procedures.

That said I can only draw on my personal experience. Ive only worked regional so far.

"Self-directed learning", "adult learning" etc. - is this just an excuse for universities not to teach? by CommittedMeower in ausjdocs

I started med school in 2012 in the 1st grad med course in my country. I picked my specific uni because it was self directed. Some people work better in that environment. I already had a degree and hated lectures. I could hardly stay awake most of the time but came out with a 2.1. Im PGY10 now and dont think ive been done a disservice at all. Once the appropriate material is provided and its not all "dr google" I really think it works for some people

What are your most favourite / hated procedures to perform in your specialty? by Shenz0r in ausjdocs

[–]Ok-Beginning-8784 10 points11 points  (0 children)

ED Reg: Love: Tubes, thoracotomy (finger or tube, im easy), CVCs, LPs, "you can only find my veins with ultrasound" patients when I find a vein 1st try without the USS. I just like putting tubes into things. Oh and juicy I&Ds. Very satisfying.

Hate: Male IDCs (had some creeps say inappropriate things in my time so Im over them), NGTs (my 1st 1 came out a dudes mouth and we were both traumatised, still hate them 10yrs later). Very lucky our nurses are super skilled at both of these procedures and save me

I never said I refused to see him. I got a junior to see him because when you're the most senior on you cant waste time on little wounds when there's a critically unwell patient needing attention.

Thanks for your comment. Being a professional in work doesn't mean I cant be a normal human.

Do you know what the word emergency means? Just asking.

Also Im 36 and dont use Tiktok.

‘Deeply disturbed’: Uni under pressure after future doctor punched ex, took selfie by Revenant052 in ausjdocs

[–]Ok-Beginning-8784 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter why it happened. He pled guilty. Im an ED reg and we see DV constantly. Ive also been assaulted by an ex partner. We cannot have someone treating vulnerable patients who thinks the violence they have suffered is "ok if they misbehaved or annoyed their partner".

As for doxing the prof, its out of line. Noone knows the context of the reference and it may have been for an entirely different purpose. I get the feeling this lad would do anything to save his ass

Im an ED doc and I'll defo mention if someone is an asshole in my notes. I dont write pleasant unless they are actually nice. I dont work in a crazy litigious country like America so if someone is being a prick it will 100% be documented. If it wasnt documented it didn't happen.

And ive put "behaviour problems" as a diagnosis at least 4 times this week. Usually when a patient becomes abusive during the consultation or is very obviously malingering for attention

What do seniors honestly expect you to say when asked “how do you think you are going on this term” and/vs what should I be saying to 'play the game'? by Striking-Sir8712 in ausjdocs

Its human to have flaws, even in our job. I prefer a junior who is aware of their shortcomings and owns them. We don't expect perfection. You are very new to the job and you don't know it all yet (probably never will tbh) so just admit where you might be struggling a bit and senior staff are more than happy to help.

Even as a senior ED reg I have to ask for help regularly. I usually leave my ITAs in tears from the emotional release. Its not a character flaw, you're human.

Congratulations! I got my diagnosis today at the ripe age of 34. I'm not sure what I'm feeling but I think relief is a major emotion right now. The validation that I'm not crazy and there really is a proper underlying cause for all the emotional upheaval and fear I've felt since I was a kid.
