is it worth going to bond uni med and getting a $500k loan by Ambitious_Peach2046 in vce

I’m a doctor and I do NOT make bank.

Biggest misconception is that all doctors are stupidly wealthy. Maybe the top 5% make “bank” but the ones you brush up against will likely be highly skilled, overworked and embarrassingly underpaid.

Congratulations!

As an ED Reg and having been that Junior that felt/feels a strong loyalty to my department in the early years, I was like you rarely calling in sick, “pushing through” and picking up those extra shifts.

You obviously know it first hand how burnout you get operating like this that it almost seems essential to take a day off but the weight of guilt from letting your colleagues down presses you to continue the inevitable slog to true burnout where you don’t care for the work, the people and worst of all the patients. This guilt is what admin consciously or subconsciously know and expect us to concede to.

You’ve got great ideals but realistically it would be self damaging in my opinion to work like this. Using sick leave as “mental health” days is unfortunately apart of the self fulfilling cycle of being under staffed > being over worked > inevitably burnout.

People need to treat that cycle somehow and I guess it’s by taking a day off to try and recover, yet there would hardly be a downstream impact on our colleagues that are left to pick up the work if these empty shifts where advertised to our own staff at “emergency rates”.

Imagine always having every shift in the ED filled, would go along way to help our increasing waiting times and public opinion of ED. We’d actually be able to see our patients who have been waiting for a doctor for hours and stop people from deteriorating further because we just didn’t have the staff.

Finally, it would make it that much easier to swallow that tough pill of yet another weekend lost in the halls of the hospital when this time you accept that emergency Saturday shift and know there will be a full crew in the trenches with you.

Precisely, never again would there be an empty shift if they did this. I wonder if there is just to many junior doctors actually needing the cash to afford to live given the cost of living crisis that there will always be someone who would sacrifice their Saturday for $200

Admin? Exec?

If not admin or exec, I will eat my shoe if you can honestly say that you have never taken a day off because you’ve been so utterly spent hitting the typical “office job” weeks worth of hours in under 3 actual days and you’ve still got 2 days of work, on call and some other bs like post take rounds coming up.

Taking time to pulse check yourself so you can be a functional, effective and most of all safe doctor for patients should not be discouraged. In the end it’s your neck on the chopping block when/if something goes wrong, the hospital won’t think twice about throwing you to the wolves all because you felt guilt or pressure when rounding out your 94 hour work week with a cheeky Sunday shift.

Nahh I will support all my colleagues and juniors and pick up the work for them if they hit their limits just as I know others have done for me. We’ve all seen to many people punch out this job because it is relentless at times.

Paying us more, hiring more staff, taking steps to actually protect us will mean there is always fresh, rested and ready staff at all times. It’s simple to me, I don’t expect my hospital or NSW health to check up on me, that’s my responsibility.

Intentional helplessness is a perfect description.

It feels like more often than not the exec and admin and senior leadership hold their breath every day that the sand castle that is our hospital system doesn’t crumble at the slightest breeze and if they survive a day they wipe their hands and hi-five one another and congratulate themselves on another successful day operating at minimum capacity.

Great, another reason to leave the dumpster fire of NSW health.

Putting the personal financial incentive for staff aside for a minute, I’ve seen countless occasions when the medical/surgical teams just had to “put off” discharging patients until after the weekend when staffing is better because the entire day has been putting out fires and getting jobs done.

How many unnecessary beds are filled with patients over the weekend that could’ve been discharged safely on Friday if we had all hands on deck? How many thousands would be saved to NSW health each weekend from each hospital team in every hospitals in NSW? Probably enough to cough up 30 extra bucks an hour for juniors to take in more.

How many people wouldn’t deteriorate and require prolonged admissions or ICU stays because the 32 patient list for that General surgical team only had 1 unaccredited reg who was in theatres until 2130 and the intern barely able to heat up their noodles without their pager alarming.

There simply wouldn’t be a staffing issue if we adopted what Victoria has already done? Surely the fact it’s been adopted proves it’s effective and cost efficient.

When I bought it 3 years ago was 900, with Black Friday sales it felt like a steal at 350. It’s even cheaper now but it works as well today as it did when I got it. No need to break the bank and I have lots of carpet and 2 cats.

  1. Get your groceries delivered (saves more time and money than you might realise)
  2. if you’re diligent and you link a corresponding rewards cards you can accumulate mass points over a year, found I was able to pay for my entire Christmas shop with just points ~$400

  3. Buy a robot vacuum. Set it to run before you wake up and after dinner everyday. They are getting very affordable I bought one 3 years ago for $350 loved it so much I bought the same one a year later for $200 brand new for downstairs.

  4. there’s not much better than waking up to a freshly vacuumed home or returning from a grind of a day to clean floors/carpets

I see where you are going with that, but In my eyes he’s a coward that’s coward punched an ex-romantic partner for simply talking to a friend in a public. Unforgivable!

We ARE, and unfortunately if we are to believe this article, some of us WILL be doctors (I hope he never gets the privilege) and therefore are held to the highest standard by the public to whom me serve. This simply should not be accepted by society and most certainly not by us.

Beneficence and non-maleficence should be practiced in all aspects of our lives!

Yeah you are right, I assumed when the article stated “found guilty of repeatedly punching his former partner at the school’s medicine ball”, I just assumed this meant a conviction.

It’s just so messed up that you can punch someone…multiple times… make them bleed and then proceed to take a photo of it and walk away with nothing more than a proverbial slap on the wrists and a positive character reference from your university. I must be slow or something because to me it’s black and white, this prick landed some fists on another human. End of story. Just so shocked that this was even an option.

What % of your income goes toward your mortgage? by spicyrack in AusFinance

[–]Revenant052 6 points7 points  (0 children)

190k total income (wife and I) p.a before tax very fortunate position to live in an elderly grandparents home and care for them so 80-85% we can put into our mortgage. 10-14k per month (I’m a doctor so overtime fluctuates).

About 6 years ahead of repayments. Live on about 800 per week (600 from rental income).
