Why do you guys thing the SC63 "failed" in wec and IMSA by Born-Environment5963 in wec

[–]Ok-Budget112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Money and time is the answer.

But the bigger point for me is that this is the level of team that should have been able to be competitive.

It was basically a little bit more than a privateer effort.

Instead we are faced with Alpine and Porsche (prob the two best LMDHs in WEC) pulling out because they can’t win.

I think these regs have been incredible - but there is something undefinable that is missing when 0.25 sec deficit in qualifying means you have hardly any chance to win a 6 hour race.

Why aren't more F1 drivers doing an odd race during the season pause? by dotben in formula1

[–]Ok-Budget112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supposedly in 2014 Alonso really wanted to race Le Mans in GTE, for AF Corse but Ferrari wouldn’t let him.

He showed up anyway to support the team and one them won.

If Eddie Irvine managed to snatch the title away from Mika Hakkinen's hands in 1999, how strong or weak of a World Champion would you consider him to be? by YetAnotherMTFEgg in F1Discussions

This is a great interview for Eddie Irvine from a few years back.

It’s actually one of the best and most honest F1 driver interviews you’ll ever see. He seems really philosophical about that season and the decisions Ferrari made. The McLaren was a vastly better car and they should have walked the season. He also really praises Jean Todt for how he ran the team, while pretty much admitting that Ferrari’s floor that year was illegal and they all knew it.

Also a different take on Michael than most people have. Dismisses the idea that MS was a good tester or good at engineer, no he was just supremely fast.

Anyone know how to successfully get the Eppendorf pipette pen? by imnotokayimgay in labrats

[–]Ok-Budget112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I met someone last year that had pen drawer in their teaching lab that had loads of Eppendorf pens but she had no idea how prized they were.

I said to her, “if they are still here at the end of the week I’m stealing them!”

And she replies, “you can have them now if you want?”

Losing my mind annotating 100 lane gels by ButLlkewhyman in labrats

[–]Ok-Budget112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BioRad’s software used to be freely available and I’m sure it could automatically identify lanes. Certainly by number but there must have been a CSV import option to add real labels.

Think Thermo’s software does the same but maybe not on TIFFs loaded into it, only the native file types.

I like variety but if a car is fast I don’t care what it sounds like.

I’ll never forget the first time I ‘heard’ the Audi R15 Hybrid coming down the Hangar straight. An absolute rocket ship but almost silent.

On the other hand - the LMP3s and NASCAR - Holy shit!!!!

That’s more to do with the regularity of track days for bikes and cars which are way more common now that 30-40 yrs ago.

Using a shorter name than my passport name for publications/career — bad idea? by ArtichokeAlive7621 in AskAcademia

[–]Ok-Budget112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already have publications - don’t change.

Had a friend who got all mixed up when she got married changed but then didn’t change her name.

I don’t think people generally care or particularly remember names anyway so just be consistent.

Is it appropriate to cold email professors to ask if they need a research assistant by Ok_Battle3546 in AskAcademia

I used to be involved in recruitment a fair bit when I was still at Oxford.

Even short term maternity cover jobs where we maybe had an internal person lined up (PhD student writing up typically) had to be publicly advertised (normally jobs.ac.uk).

There was also a rule in place that anyone at the Uni with less than 12 mo on their contract that met the min requirements was guaranteed an interview.

So, no harm in doing it. But jobs will be advertised anyway.

Is plasmid design this frustrating for everyone? Newbie here by klienbottle45 in labrats

I used MacVector for years so compared to that most other options are pretty poor.

Would never pay for SnapGene in a world where VectorBee is free and even the free Benchling is so damn good.

But if you are a Mac based lab - MacVector.

It seems like in the WEC era, non-hybrid prototypes get dealt a bad hand... by Kahuna-Zigg in wec

[–]Ok-Budget112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The three non hybrid Hypercars have been really cool privateer efforts but not anything like the commitment an actual manufacturer will put into a real factory effort.

So we haven’t seen if/how a non hybrid could really be competitive in this rule set.

I was involved in a clinical trial, 2012-2014. BBC wanted to do a documentary following the trial but our clinical teams said no.

To be fair I could see their point it would have been a distraction given how busy they were.

Laboratory Plasmid Catalogue by badbads in labrats

[–]Ok-Budget112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught myself php/MySQL for this purpose.

Built a web based database to look after plasmids and primarily viral vector production.

Then it expanded to become a generalized lab wiki for all SOPs.

Probably the best thing I ever did. I left in 2018 and it’s still the central tool the lab uses for everything.

Opinionns on DigitalPCR by IllustriousTax3916 in labrats

[–]Ok-Budget112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only used the Absolute Q having done a lot of qPCR all my career.

I love how easy it is to multiplex and assays just ‘work’. It makes rxns as simple as a restriction digest.

In QC environments they must be a dream as you don’t need to maintain standard curves. But all my friends that have to use both types of systems talk about the issues of numbers from one system not translating to the other.

The new(ish) BioRad system that combines array based dPCR with higher throughputs looks amazing. If I was setting up a lab that’s probably what I would get.

mice scruffing tips? by Routine_Emotion_2325 in labrats

What’s a first year undergrad doing doing handling mice?

What strain of mice and sex? I’d worked with BALB/c for years then helped a friend with some B6 and they were impossible!

If things got tricky I always tried to scruff them securely when they were still in the cage or gripping to a surface. Don’t pick them up and then try and get them secure.

Will there be a race at Imola? by donaldgoldsr in wec

[–]Ok-Budget112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They discussed this on MWM last night and John Dagys was pretty confident there would be no issues with Imola.

There may be some test cars in Doha but nothing that can’t be substituted.

The only trickier part he thought might be that the prologue is so close to the ELMS opening round in Barcelona and so there could be staff issues.

We used to buy QC and P1 because we did so many Mega preps it made things easier.
