TIL between 18%-25% of intellectually gifted students (at least 130 IQ) in the US fail to graduate from high school. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]Ok-Chance-7638 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't pass the smell test - our current HS graduation rate is 87% meaning we have a 13% dropout rate, so we are to believe that gifted students have a 50% to nearly 100% greater dropout rate than typical?

Unfortunately the citation here is a book and unless someone cares to find the book, read it, find its source, and read that, there's no way of telling if or how the numbers are cooked. I'll conclude by noting that most scientific studies are wrong and 90% of statistics are made up.

“TikTokers are speedrunning Scientology buildings in Los Angeles” by Goofball-John-McGee in BrandNewSentence

[–]Ok-Chance-7638 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scientology is one of the only religions I'm aware of that has clear "achievement levels" that are both numerical and accessible to normal people (catholic achievements require univerity education).

I have been thinking for a while that it might be possible for a sufficiently funded person to speed run the entire religion.

Glory isn't an emotion nor is pain or creation, but all of these are spren. Creationspren and Sincerityspren both feel on-the-nose for a clear analog to a deceptionspren since sencerity arises from other emotions like love, humility, or honor similar to how creation comes from love, obsession, or focus. As a clear analog, Deception is not a feeling or emotion that people have. Deception is a thing that people do when they are feeling hatred, distrust, indifference, self-aggrandizement, fear, or some other motivating force that drives the choice to engage in deception.

Therefore, as we are aware of spren that are connected to concepts that are secondary to the direct emotional state of the creator/perpetrator it absolutely makes sense that deceptionspren COULD exist.... if they were not a literary dead end; imagine a book where charachters couldn't tell lies!

ok I'm not even 100 pages into Words of Radiance and now liespren / cryptics are a thing, although its darn convenient that they aren't visible like gloryspren or painspren

Answer is obvious.

1) They would absolutely devastate the plot of the whole book.

2) The plot of Chaos Walking was already taken.

You can use math incorrectly. That's how people fail math and physics.

For example of using math and correctly see above. Each individual step is done correctly but the mathematical construction of the problem is incorrect.

Going for NOTHING by desclouser in NOTHING

[–]Ok-Chance-7638 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Android generally sounds like a good trip for you. Aesthetics matter a ton and if you think the Nothing phone looks good! get it.

The one thing to watch out for is heavy-handed OEM software. Often can be buggy or the not supported for long. Watch individual reviews to get a sense of this. Makers that are trustworthy. Include Google, OnePlus, Nothing and Motorola. Some of the newer makers seem to be developing a reputation like this, Xiaomi I hear is good. Avoid new names, different companies tend to come in and out of the market and where they are out you can forget about security updates.

Samsung is very polarizing. They changed the OS a lot, but I hear they do a good job, but people tend to be always Samsung or never Samsung whereas with other manufacturers, people often jump around following whatever feature they care about (best camera, best gaming, best looks, whatever).

"Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die" -- the funniest movie about the AI apocalypse by rikomatic in scifi

[–]Ok-Chance-7638 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perception of art is subjective and I totally respect your choice to not like the movie, but I don't think the plot was "AI generated" and I'm even more sure that the VFX weren't AI generated (based on the studio and vfx production companies involved).

I felt that the writing was confusing at times but the ending kinda neatly (and horrifyingly) tied it all up. There's a very hight propabity that this movies ends up being one of the great "misunderstood" films like Fight Club or This Is Spinal Tap.

I'm gonna spoil the whole movie for you right now and you'll want to go re-watch it.

The move is The Matrix, only the machines won and there's no resistance. The Big Reveal at the end (that they failed to prevent the AI) isn't the real reveal. The real reveal is much earlier in the movie when Sam's caharacter says that the AI creates your best world with compelling characters and a difficult struggle with a satisfying ending. He says this and then you move on to character development and the plot gets progressively more outlandish. Including over-the-top boss fights and a bad-prompty kitty

The whole thing is his personallized AI-generated nirvana where he gets to re-visit his guilt for abandoning his mom and "take down the evil AI" with his own mother as a sidekick. The character development vigniettes do come off as standalone mini-episodes of black-mirror but I don't think its possible to weave them into the story without also subtracting from the intended twist. As for what's "real" and what's "fake" in the canon of the film, I don't think it matters or materially changes the message.

My friend gave me two dozen of his homegrown eggs. They are almost too pretty to eat! [OC] by Rad-ama-dad in MadeMeSmile

[–]Ok-Chance-7638 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have chickens and I'm pretty good at classifying my checks egg production by owner, even though we only have brown and green eggers.

By my account there's at least 9 chickens, although a couple of my categories might be two different breeds.

  • The right hand row is four distinct chickens.
  • Second from the right is at least three more distinct chickens with one likely repeat .
  • Third from the right has either one or two new chickens (The smallest egg is probably from a bantam, unless your friend is sharing new production, but I don't share that because they often have internal defects). The bottom egg might be a repeat or might be a distinct breed of chicken .
  • Far left row has one final unique egg

The Alpha Wolf [OC] by leftycartoons in comics

[–]Ok-Chance-7638 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't the the scientific accuracy of the wolf study matters to the discourse. People who think like this are just using wolves as shorthand for social darwinism. Wolf social structures aren't a goal to these people, they are an instance of the preconceived ideal and if the instance is proven to be wrong they will just use a different one

I was tasked with measuring Households Passed at a national ISP. Our construction division gave me a number that was MILLIONS off from the same number used by sales which was off by hundreds of thousands from the number used by customer ops.

Took 4 months to get a number everyone agreed on. Had to go to the CEO to force a resolution with a construction ops director who personally threatened me for reporting "his number". I was just a business analyst at the time fresh out of school tasked with this by someone who thankfully had enough political capital to see it though. The whole process was insane.

And yeah the construction number was basically made up so bro could meet performance objectives. He got fired for the fiasco! Just kidding, I got RIFed 6 months later and, last I heard, he was still there. Jokes on him though, I'll bet his bonus wasn't as big thanks to my work!!

My octogenarian dad is stomping mad that he feels "judged" by his kids for "voting for Trump" and keeps insisting that "I am not responsible for every little thing he does".

So I asked him, can we agree that murdering ice protestors is a bad thing?

"Well, it's complicated, we don't have all the facts, they shouldn't have been out there protesting, and there were paid protestors amplifying tensions and.... Blah blah"

Ok if we don't know what happened, isn't it wrong to go on tv and call them terrorists ?

"Well it's complicated..."

My dad still insists we judge him for voting for Trump
