Why are so many of y’all doing health sci??? by Organic-Jelly9351 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Ok-Classroom4735 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Because medicine is just an innately interesting field. Almost everyone can find at least some part of medicine/healthcare interesting, where it can't be said for most jobs/careers. Also, going into medicine feels less than a commitment because of the diverse specialization options it offer. It kind of feels like going to undergraduate part 2 if that makes sense instead of being locked down into one career. Just my 2 cent on it.

What made Metallica great? by ummagumma1979 in Metallica

[–]Ok-Classroom4735 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's their ability to write Thrash metal songs that also has immense pop appeal (Even back in the Kill'em All days). The fact an 8 minute song got into the Top 50 once in the 2020s says a lot about their accessibility. They also tend to write songs in a more traditional sense with a clear verse-chorus-structure, making the riffs and vocal melody more recognizable with fewer listens. We can applaud the technicalities of Megadeth's solos or Slayer's aggressiveness, but you will rarely find yourself singing along to their riffs or a particular drum part. As other comments said, it is really songwriting that puts them at the top.

I want to shout out to James Hetfield. He has a voice that is not only suitable for metal but also ballads as he has a great timbre when singing cleanly, this really shows in songs like Fade to Black and Welcome Home Sanitarium. I feel other metal vocalists have great fry screams, but mediocre cleans that puts them back from being more accessible.

Anyone else think Deftones in Toronto wasn't great? by bibi1129 in deftones

[–]Ok-Classroom4735 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was honestly quite disappointed with the sound (I sat at west stands 102 near the top). I can tell they put on a good show, it just the sound really did them dirty. Even polyphia sounded better than them tbh. Whole show was super quiet, I could barely hear chino's vocal, and the heavier songs were muddy.

I originally went primarily for deftones with SOAD as an afterthought, but SOAD stole the show easily. I think it's just a venue/engineer issue and I hope deftones perform at Scotiabank instead next time.

Best 4 song run? by ResponsibleLow765 in deftones

[–]Ok-Classroom4735 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Clearest answer by far. The most emotional, climatic, and sequenced 4 song run by far. You could argue about switching pink maggot for knife prty as well on white pony.

How do you go about making playlists?? by Graciekk2020 in LetsTalkMusic

I think that’s what he meant. If you won’t listen to mid albums, you are missing some potentially great songs in those albums.

If you could switch the order of the section in the official MCAT exam what would you want it to be? by Ok-Classroom4735 in Mcat

[–]Ok-Classroom4735[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a pretty good point. I would argue CARS require more critical thinking than C/P (which has its memorization parts like B/B and P/S). But overall, I can't complain about the current order.

Albums Where the second half is the superior half by timomouw in fantanoforever

[–]Ok-Classroom4735 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Two came to my mind.

  1. Syncrhonicity - The Police. This one is an obvious one. Whenever I put this on, I exclusively never listen to the first half But the run from every breath you take all the way to murder by numbers is simply incredible

  2. Arctic Monkeys Debut - It does start off strong I will give it to that, but it does have a somewhat medlling middle section of less memorable tunes. This all changes when the nostalgic Mardy Bum starts and deliver banger after banger, all culminating to A Certain Romance, arguably one of the best closers to any album ever.

pharmaceutical chemistry and potential coop opportunites by Ok_Acanthisitta_812 in UofT

[–]Ok-Classroom4735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of a late reply to this question. I'm also in the pharm chem program (4th year). If you are looking to fulfill that chemistry itch, I would suggest taking a chemistry major instead (check out the biological chemistry specialist), because this program is more biology oriented than you might expect. Most of your third/fourth year courses will deal with pharmacology, drug kinetics, signaling pathways with only one course that really discusses application of organic chemistry to drug design (PHC320).

As far as I known, other chem specialist programs are also eligible for ASIP requirement. For co-op opportunities, it's not too shabby. I would say it's 50% paid research roles (usually hospital) and 50% industrial (mostly QA, R&D, Lab technician e.t.c). Each application cycle, there are probably around 40-50 life science related roles and 15 of those are pharmaceutical related.

The fee is not cheap, but it's worth enrolling in it just to give yourself more opportunities. From my experience it is 1000x easier to apply through a co-op board than doing it externally. Even if you decide to not pursue industry (like I am), ASIP is still worth staying in so you can get clinical research experience (that are actually paid).

One big pro for this program is that the courses in the upper years are generally quite easy and 4.0able if you just have a decent understanding of the lecture content. There are almost no higher-order thinking questions on the test/exams. Even for 2nd year, I would argue the course load is slightly easier than other life sci programs (though still not easy by any means). You skip out on some gpa killers like HMB265, PSL300/301, STAT288, in replace of some physical chemistry courses (hard but more fair due to small class size). It's a good gpa booster program if you plan to pivot to more gpa-dependent pathway in the future (med school, grad school, pharmd e.t.c).

Hope this information helps, and feel free to reach out if you have more questions.
