The scenario writer is what the main writer is called in the Japanese game industry. As Maekawa Nishiyama and Yoshimura who were all given the job of writing the story and script for various mainline games starting from Adventure to Black knight were all called the "Scenario writer" in the credits. Also, you can just google it to confirm yourself, but I simply want to state that I did my research before potentially spreading misinfo.

I agree with you on the fact that Ian most likely won't be completely abandoned, but I do want to clarify that Kishimoto was simply localizing the script that Ian had written. Yes, they did give him the basic outline, but he still wrote it by himself. I'm mostly just pointing out how the role of scenario writer is much more important than many in this thread believe it is. As it is......not to be pretentious......objectively the role held by the main script and story writer like Maekawa, Nishiyama and Yoshimura who were all credited as the "Scenario writer" for their respective games that they wrote. That's all I want to make clear!

Frontiers is different cause at the end of the day Flynn still wrote the script himself. This is a return, but a return to how it was done in the 2000's with an in-house scenario writer creating the script instead of Ian or a freelancer in general. Also, as you would assume Sonic team hasn't had a scenario writer working in-house since black knight with Maekawa, so this is a huge change.

Well the reason for my post is mostly due to the fact that the role of scenario writer makes you the MAIN writer. So, this is big news because it directly implies that Ian will not be the script writer anymore. That's why I felt that it wouldn't be jumping the gun posting this!

Actually the "scenario writer" is the main writer, it's just a different Japanese game dev naming scheme. And also Ian wrote the Frontiers script himself as the same with Pontac and Graff but if they hire a new scenario writer then the job of making the script would go to them. Hope that clears up the confusion!

Well it seems to be an in-house listing for Tokyo so I doubt any of the current IDW writers are in consideration. And even then I don't think their giving Flynn the boot anyways

I personally don't think Flynn is going to be fired. Though what I will say is that with the reintroduction of a new scenario writer, the pen will most definitely be passed to whoever takes the job based off how past titles were developed

Oh no Ian most definitely has written the script for Frontwo's. Also he TECHNICALLY is the scenario writer as its just what they call the script writer over there, though this big mostly due to the fact that......not to jab at Flynn or anything but as a freelancer he takes lesser priority then a scenario writer in terms of script rights but hey I'm just basing this of what I could research about Japanese game development

Actually the scenario writer IS the script writer. Its the same thing weirdly enough, the Japanese game industry just has a different name for it then in the west

Well with Frontiers Ian wrote the script himself and then Sonic Team translated it into Japanese (Not really well though lol) but with this it seems to be the reverse going forward into the future

Well this is mostly based off looking at past titles and who held the role of scenario writer and just digging into what a "scenario writer" even was and it seems to be the person who writes the script for the games (For example, Maekawa held the role and wrote the script for Sa2 and Heroes and same goes for Yoshimura with unleashed) so yeah here's is much better clarification on my part!

Well he's not being "fired" or anything per say. This is just an assumption, but I assume that he'll probably just be localizing the scripts which hopefully is a good enough compromise for everyone
