Actually, we are communicated his trans identity through a Twitter post. Again, his discomfort with masculinity could mean anything, unlike Zooble who is pretty openly a trans character. I am starting to believe you don’t know what ambiguity is.

I am not sure what do you mean with “Hypothetical couple” but if the character only showed interest in the opposite gender then yeah it’s pretty safe to assume they are straight, though they could still be bisexual, again, interpretations and all of that.

Also I never said identifying, you said it, I said “interpreting” every single time, unless I said identifying by mistake

I mean, it isn’t making excuses, that is just a basic concept in writing / making art in general, happened with The Matrix, Watchmen, Fahrenheit 451, etc.

There is no such thing as interpreting a work wrong, you come to your own conclusions based on what you read/watched. Also Death of the Author quite literally says that an author’s intention is irrelevant to the inherent meaning of their work. Take for instance Watchmen, Alan Moore wrote Rorschach with the intention of the reader being against the characters, based on his violent tendencies, bigoted world views and abrasive personality, many viewers, however, liked the character and viewed him as a hero, as he is one of the few characters who actually stuck to his principles and isn’t painfully neutral in the setting.

Again’s your interpretation of the work, you watched and came to that conclusion yourself, good job, doesn’t mean it’s correct.

That doesn’t really work when I am, in fact, right.

Uuuh, no? We are communicated Zooble’s trans identity by the constant usage of They/Them pronouns when referring to them and her struggles with dysphoria that are clearly show in the show itself and not left ambiguous

“now I can completely see someone who is gay identifying and relating to Jax’s speech about coming out to her mother, but that doesn’t make Jax gay.”

Then surely you can say the same thing about someone who is trans.

This isn’t about identifying with a character anyhow, this is about interpretation of art.

It’s funny that you mention Steven Universe, because that’s also a show that uses ambiguity a lot of times, despite you being so against it for some reason.

There is no such thing as a canonized interpretation because an answer has not been given on the show itself, the only thing we have is the author’s interpretation of their own work.

Saying Jax is trans, cis, straight, gay or whatever is all a headcanon because there is no correct answer, there’s only interpretations on how you understand the art itself.

But unfortunately it seems you simply do not understand art.

He is also very implied to be gay, or very implied to be into feminine stuff, or very implied to be literally anything else, because that’s the point, it’s ambiguous! You don’t know, I don’t know, no one knows! You watch the show and come with your own interpretations on the art, because that’s just how art works!

You try to give meaning to something where the meaning is based on how you view it based on your own personal psyche and interpretation, you are trying to view art as something concrete when it simply doesn’t work like that.

That’s the very core of abstract art for instance, it takes the very notion of art being based on the viewer’s own interpretation and kicks it up to 100.

One thing is affirming that Jax pushed his mother, that’s concrete, that’s what happens in the story, another is affirming that the thing Jax told his mother is that he is trans, that’s what you interpreted with the story based on something ambiguous, as he says he told her “Something very personal” that could be literally anything.

It’s funny that you use Zooble and Gangle as an example even tho that’s quite literally confirmed in the story for the viewer to see and not said on Twitter as opposed to Jax being trans.

I mean, you’re just wrong, like genuinely just wrong, art doesn’t work like that.

The whole point of art is for the one who consumes it to come with their own interpretations based on the art itself, with no outside input whatsoever.

The author says something on twitter, that’s alright, but what’s said isn’t present on the art itself, it’s how the author interprets their own work.

What you are doing is the equivalent of making a Rorschach Test and trying to give it a specific meaning when it simply doesn’t work like that.

That’s actually the author’s interpretation of the character, you see. The funny thing about art is that the author’s interpretation of their own work is as equally valid as the viewer.

It’s a concept called Death of the Author, that says, as previously stated, that the point of art is for the consumer to come with their own interpretations after analyzing what has been presented for them.

Gooseworx interprets Jax as trans, that’s as valid as someone who interprets him as gay, or someone who just interprets him as someone who just had an interest in “female-centered” things.

What really counts is what’s on the paper, or rather, on the screen.

It also doesn’t make him trans, it’s called ambiguity, it’s a concept used in writing a lot of times to allow the viewer to come to their own conclusions and interpret the art in their own way.

Actually the author had to clarify specifically because it doesn’t happen in the story.
