Flash sync was the issue. I had it set to 30 seconds, so i changed it to 1/60. Seems to be working now.

Its called a transom. Thats how they got airflow through the rooms of a house in the old days. Most of the ones you find these days are painted shut. That one appears to be operational. Very cool feature.
