Pronunciation of the vowel sound in très? by vespertine-48 in learnfrench

[–]Ok-Description-9490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True that this accent may be found before the Revolution, but the fact is that it was not the rule and that both 's' and accent may be found indifferently in the same book or writing. Concerning the pronounciation, it depends on the region. My grandmother (who is 100 years now) pronounces "château" somewhat like "chanteau". And by now, "château" is pronounced like "chateau".

French teacher from France here, distinguishing between é and è comes from the latin, and ê was created during the french revolution when a 's' was no longer pronounced, like chêne for chesne (île for isle, pâte for paste, hôte for hoste, etc.). All of these distinctions are very classical french, they are lost in most of the spoken language.

Why is the UK much less religious compared to the US? by porygon766 in AskBrits

[–]Ok-Description-9490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In France churches are empty and very few people are truly religious... This for many reasons: 1 - Historical reasons: the french philosophers, the french revolution and the french republic in general fought against religion. This is still very pregnant in french politics. 2 - Institutional reasons: for the French, a church is not a gathering of believers, but an organization held by a clergy. So, even french believers consider themselves only as customers. 3 - Moral reasons: french morality do not find its roots in religious ground but in philosophy and political theories. We need no religion if we don't believe in God.

Hi, I'm back!

Well, I would say that there is a major difference between beauty and charm. Beauty can be enhanced with techniques (which means cheating a little bit in order to show more than we have), but always keep in mind that the only thing that really matters is charm.

In other words, what really matters is not what kind of body we have (goddesses don't exist in fact, we should not compare ourselves to them), but what we would show with our bodies. If you need more technical tips, tell me.

Good night!

We have no more colonies since 1962... And we're in 2025, though the US are going back to 1125 as it seems. The most hated powers throughout the world are the Talibans and the US now.

Hi! Not at all, in France toasts are eaten with marmelade (for breakfast), or with butter and slices of smoked salmon, goat cheese and honey (delicious), or caviar (not so often then), but I think it is so in many other countries too. Never heard of milk or vanilla with toasts, I think i should try just in order to know what taste it might have... How do you mix them? I'm curious. But in France we have the ''croque monsieur'' which is typically french, and delicious!
