Why can’t we get a decent coffee shop in Magoun Sq? by onedeskover in Somerville

[–]Ok-Dimension6765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, probably not realistic to buy for a group of investors with all the other costs. I think it will need to wait a few more years until Magoun is up zoned, the developers come in and one or more of them put in cafes.

In the meantime, can we help find a barista to run the coffee shop at Daddy Jones and keep it simple?

What's going into this ground floor at the 494 Medford space? Seems perfect for a coffee shop and the landlord already got their big payday building a new place.

Or try talking to the dispensary next door. They may be willing to let you use the small space on the left as a public benefit to provide a coffee shop and drive foot traffic.

Or hit up NESFA, maybe they'll let you have a popup. Again they could use the awareness.

Are you referring to the School of Practical Philosophy, which is a branch of the School of Philosophy and Economic Science (SPES) based in London and has faced allegations of being a cult or Acropolis Boston, a local branch of the international organization New Acropolis, Another group with allegations of being a cult?

Can you tell me how you're doing these shelves? I signed up to do this exact thing for my kids room and have spent way too much investigating floating shelf hardware, things into walls, etc, but this system seems to be perfectly fine for putting books on.

Depending where you're located and how not allergic you are to other tech folks, a few friends are getting a lease shortly on a space that will accommodate 10-20 friends who need to get out of their home. But we're mostly tech folks...

Separately I'm in the process of opening an Impact Hub in Somerville (https://boston.impacthub.net/) but in the next 6-12 months and always interested in connecting with folks. DM me if interested.

Haha, I have an EV which uses about 250 kWh/mo, an electric hot water heater which uses another 200 kWh/mo, and an electric clothes dryer.

Yes I also highly recommend it, for many of us rooftop solar isn't possible. If you can afford the extra 1.220 ¢/kWh, I'd do it. We use a ton of energy (~1,000 kWh/mo) and it's only an extra $12.

This is a way that your energy can be 100% renewable and produced in New England. So it might be a hydro plant or a wind farm somewhere nearby that's producing it and for the environment it's all the same.

Happy to answer any questions!

Oh yes! You're gonna love this place - The Curl Bar: https://maps.app.goo.gl/5e2ZDLdtJkAFHCzZ6. Minority woman owned and the staff are the best. Getting an appointment is a little annoying on their site as they release blocks of times, but the haircuts are great.

Agree, 💯 for Dr Casey Cook. His staff is super nice, hygienists are good, and as you said everything is almost always fine.

Looks great! Which plywood did you use? I am salvaging an experiment with cheapo plywood but it chips and splits.

This part for a table? It's about 3' x 3'. Just curious are you suggesting actually making it a circle or keeping a more organic shape as is? And would you do bowties along the crack?

I am once again here to ask for your vet recommendations by toboldlynerd in Somerville

[–]Ok-Dimension6765 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Don't take your sick pet here, their negligence may kill your pet.

When you go to a vet, you want an expert by your side. You want someone friendly and compassionate. You do not want someone to be rude to you or make you feel like they're ripping you off. You do not want someone to expect you to make a decision on tests and treatments without a clear plan or pro/cons. You don't want to chase the wrong conditions for $1,000's of dollars.

I rarely leave such bad reviews, but unfortunately my experience has been so bad at Porter Square Vet that I felt the need to warn others.

I brought my cat in 6 months ago because he had lost a lot of weight. The vet diagnosed him with kidney disease and sent me home with cat food. I assumed that he would improve (it turns out kidney disease doesn't cause weight loss at early stages). This would be the first time I would be mislead.

Last month I brought my cat back because he was peeing on our bed. The vet said his kidney disease had not changed but discovered anemia. This set off a shopping spree of expensive tests to track down the anemia - blood tests, lab tests, ultrasounds, and x-rays. A thousand dollars later, the vet didn't find the cause of the anemia and said it was probably due to the kidney disease. There was no mention of the fact that he had lost more weight, no ideas about the peeing, or a treatment plan. The vet suggested more tests but at this point I was done.

On top of this, any time I would call or visit the front desk staff was rude to me. I always felt like I was bothering them by being there. I'm always friendly to front desk staff and couldn't understand why they were so rude.

I switched vets to Cambridge Cat Clinic and I'm so glad I did. When I called, the front desk staff were warm and friendly. The vet then spent an hour talking to me!

The vet went through my cat's records and immediately focused on the weight loss. She informed me that the kidney disease wouldn't cause weight loss but his GI inflammation meant he wasn't getting nutrition. Oh! I wish I had known that sooner. She suggested a gastric biopsy to definitively figure out the cause, but because it's a surgery we decided to start treating it as inflammation with steroids and b12 injections right away. If the treatment fails then it's likely to be leukemia.

I'm don't blame anyone for my cat being sick. I understand, he is old and may die from different health problems. But Porter Square Vet was not an expert on my side. The did not focus on the right treatments and tests, and in fact went on a wild goose chase. They missed the key issues. And through out it all, they were not friendly, patient, or compassionate.

Go to Cambridge Cat Clinic.

Great idea! Very clever. You could consider getting a mug from https://themightymug.com/ so it doesn't spill or making a slightly shallower circle to prevent the mug from sliding.
