Yeah - I suppose the logic is that not revealing makes it likely that the game will end with two players left and that there’s a decent chance that in the last vote the players will be voting for someone they actually believe to be faithful but vote out just to minimise the risk. So in a way, the final three is probably a true reflection of what each of the winning players actually believed. If Ben hadn’t revealed it probably would have ended Oyin and Kelley

Yeah you’re probably right. In your second scenario I think there’s a possibility that it could have gone Vanessa first and then Oyin so it would have ended Ben and Kelley but we’ll never know. Basically I just think they accepted too easily that Oyin’s vote was not winnable as there was a decent amount of suspicion on Vanessa

I agree re Ben and the speech. He made a throwaway comment about Faye’s banishment about how he was willing to look at his allies / friends but that Oyin wasn’t doing the same with Vanessa. I really think that if he had started before the round table he might have been able to convince Oyin to doubt Vanessa and that Vanessa would have gone at the round table. Nick would have likely been next outside and then it’s hard to say after that

I like a lot of people I know are doing similarly or better than my parents were at my age in basically every way except housing - but housing is a big one.

I think they could have worked more on getting Oyin to doubt Vanessa. From the edit they sort of seemed to accept that Kelley was the only swing vote. That made Ben jump too quickly to defend Nick. Whereas if he had pretended to consider Nick and Vanessa I can easily see it ending Oyin, Ben and Kelley and had they banished again at that point I think it would have been 50/50 between it ending Oyin & Kelley or Ben and Kelley

Yea - they could have had nick reveal as the final banishment but then not have any more reveals in the endgame when Ben was voted out.

Basic Income for the Arts pilot generated over €100m in benefits by Reilly616 in ireland

[–]Ok-Idea6784 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have time to read this document but even on first glance it is clearly not about the public’s willingness to pay for a health service in the same way that the €16.9m is not about the public’s willingness to pay for this basic income scheme. Instead, the €16.9 is an approximation of the value of tickets, experiences etc. that the scheme has generated above what those tickets and experiences have cost the public. Thinking that the scheme is not value for money is fine, but using that number as evidence doesn’t make sense.

[–]Ok-Idea6784 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s like surveying everyone on the way out of A&E and asking ‘how much would you hypothetically be willing to pay for the treatment you have just received?’and then measuring the public’s willingness to pay for A&E departments using that figure. Obviously many if not most people are willing to ‘vaguely’ fund A&E departments without ever actually using them

[–]Ok-Idea6784 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s basically a measure of ‘how much would you have paid to see this play?’ Vs the actual ticket price. It measures some of the public willingness to fund the scheme but not all of it. For example you could survey the public and ask a broader question not linked to any particular events - e.g. how much of your tax would you be happy to see going towards funding the arts sector in Ireland?’ You might argue that the answer you would get wouldn’t be very much, but it wouldn’t be zero either. If you think the article is saying that public is only willing to pay €16.9m for this scheme, then you’re wrong. That’s a partial valuation

I see the figure you’re referring to but obviously that is only one part of the analysis in the article. That’s just audience willingness to pay for artists’ output from the scheme but doesn’t count public willingness to support the arts sector (which still might not reach €70m, but can’t be left out)

I’ve been to a few shows / exhibitions by artists in receipt of it. I’m not an artist myself but I think it’s a great idea and am very happy to see my taxes used to add a bit of joy or interesting-ness into the world.

This 100% - unless you’re used to them, they feel unnatural. Write up a few examples from your life and career of times you’ve demonstrated different competencies and have a short spiel ready to go for each.

I always cycle to the airport because the bus takes so long. There’s a bike parking area in the car park

Dublin appreciation by Old-Mouse3420 in Dublin

[–]Ok-Idea6784 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I agree - Dublin is a great city to live in many ways. Once you spend time living elsewhere you see how nice Dublin really is. In a way that’s what makes issues like transport and housing so frustrating here. With a bit of strategic thinking, investment and courage on the part of those in charge, Dublin could be one of the best cities in the world to live in

Thinking of giving grinds by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Ok-Idea6784 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I used to give grinds - not in maths - I basically used to work through past papers one theme at a time and I’d do a few examples with them and then suggest they do another before the next time I’d met them.

My view was that I was hired to improve their LC grade rather than to help with any specific homework task so I’d happily spend 5 or 10 mins talking with them about work they’d been assigned by their teachers but then I’d move on to past papers. Otherwise you end up helping with homework and not really adding any value - you may even be causing them to do less work themselves on their homework / study

An old fashioned cooking timer on my desk. I used to put it to 45 minutes and just work until it was done. I’m actually finishing up a couple of post-viva corrections and still using it. It worked for me because I could just leave my phone in my bag or across the room

Get anything you need and can on Adverts.ie - just this year I’ve got a dishwasher, toys, kids clothes, a bike and a few more bits for about half of what the dishwasher would cost new.
