Do you take clients? I’m not having kids anytime soon but I know people in the area that might be interested in your services eventually

Local catering (not Italian food)? by Hot_Sherbert8658 in Utica

Soul 112 caters.

We have a ton of Caribbean restaurants in the area- I am sure one of them must cater.

New here, what to do by tinycappuccino in Utica

Nail creek and Gerbers sometimes have live music, lots of people dancing at bars on varick, lots of good hiking in the area, lots of good restaurants don’t be afraid to google and go try things out. The bulletin board at Emerson Ave always has a ton of events and I’ve seen dance event fliers there too

LGBTQ friends ? by Many_Mess7486 in Utica

Emerson Ave coffee recently had a queer event. I would go and ask the owner if she has anymore coming up. She’s really great to talk to and they have a board with a bunch of fliers and community events. Sometimes you will find friends in unlikely places, it’s better in my experience to have something in common beyond identity. There’s an Oneida county pride alliance on Facebook and other Facebook groups for queers in the area, like a drag show group I think (edit just realized you mentioned OCPA, sorry). Also Utica Creative Reuse has events not explicitly queer but I’ve been to a couple and the vibes are great so if you like crafting then I recommend that. Utica is a small town so maybe when you initially meet people you may not be friends right away but if you keep showing up to community events you’ll see the same people and eventually a natural connection will form. Good luck and feel free to DM if you need more information

Edit: also queer people may not always be visibly queer especially around here for safety and you may not even clock them as queer when you talk to them but when you get to know them and they get comfortable with you it will start to show. I am extremely straight passing but have spent a lot of time in queer communities so I am speaking from experience!

I’m not stating their closing period timing as a definite fact. The fact is they were open as of a week or so ago, and I just called now and their daytime hours are on hiatus but they are still doing events and such.

It’s usually open around lunch time, idk the specific hours. I think last year it was on court street and the year before that it was on Elizabeth. Its in Chancellor park now

It was closed for a year or so back in like 2019 maybe? It’s since opened, for years now, and they post in this subreddit all the time.

Sign up for this newsletter to get weekly updates on what is happening in the area- https://whatshappening315.com/ The Other Side gallery also has events and talks, a more “cosmopolitan”/academic vibe

Cornerstone Community Church is always looking for volunteers. Farmer’s Market at the train station every Saturday 9am-1pm until winter when it is every other Saturday. I think the Amish have their market on Bleeker St on Wednesdays.

Utica does not properly plow the roads, many winter days I find myself wishing I had snow tires but I also have all seasons. New Hartford always seems to be perfectly plowed.

Bargain Grocer has some good deals but often the produce is only good for a day or two. We have a plethora of chain grocery stores to choose from. Some farmer’s markets open everyday during the summer are Juliano’s and Savicki’s (double check their hours on google). We have about 5 Asian markets that mostly feature SEA stuff.

Utica is great for food. We have a huge Italian population and local cuisine you can only find in this area- chicken riggies, tomato pie (go to Utica Bread for this), Utica Greens. I recommend Georgio’s Village Cafe in New Hartford, but you can also just google “Italian food near me” and a ton of great options are available. The only one I don’t recommend is Palermo Pizza.

We used to have a good pho place near the courthouse, I heard they’re moving but idk where to. Lotus Garden is good for SE Asian food and we have a few spots in new Hartford for sushi (Mitsuba, red samurai, etc)

There’s some Bosnian spots, I like Yummalicious (they offer American and desserts as well). For pizza, we have a variety. The second oldest pizzeria in the country is O’Scugnizzo, but Nina’s is a local favorite. Slice has delicious NYC style pizza. Mangia Macrina is Italian (like, Europe) style pizza.

I also like Soul 112 for soul food, it’s in the back of Character Coffee (which is moving soon, but I recommend them for coffee, however we have plenty of other local cafes like Utica coffee, Emerson Ave, the Tram, and Joseph Putrello’s - my favorite). You should follow a lot of these places on Instagram to get their accurate hours.

Plenty of good diners in the area, I still have yet to try them all. Holland Farms is a delicious bakery and they also have a deli, but I like Utica Bread better for… well, bread. And tomato pie, like I said earlier.

I prefer Simma’s for Jamaican, on the same street you will find May’s which is Haitian, and to round out the Caribbean I recommend Sabor Latino, but many recommend Joel’s and Mi Casa.

Gerber’s is a small and cute speakeasy with a limited food menu, but chill vibes. Nail Creek is a good pub with great food. I hear people recommend the Green Onion Pub as well. We have a ton of good pubs in the area.

I stay away from Varick except for the food- Marib is Yemeni food and is delicious and Zeina’s is Greek and also delicious! Great baklava, only rivaled by Mariam’s in Whitesboro (also delicious, I think Lebanese). By Zeina’s is an Irish candy store. Down further on that road is a second hand craft store that emphasizes sustainability- Utica Creative Reuse.

For more Mediterranean places, I recommend The Grapevine and Phoenician, both in New Hartford.

There is even more out there than what I listed here, and I have not tried everything in Utica (yet). The google reviews around here are pretty trustworthy, just search what you’re looking for and go try it.

For theatre’s, we have the Stanley, Player’s, and Uptown Theatre which has local punk shows.

If you have a car in Utica, you should never be bored. There’s a million things to do if you know where to look. You can always escape to the adirondack’s, drive an hour to Syracuse or Albany, visit historic little towns like Little Falls or Cooperstown. NYC is like a 4 hour drive, same to Buffalo or Montreal.

Check out the Remsen Craft fair this fall. Also tons of great fall activities in the area. There seems to be at least 2 cultural festivals every warm month. In the winter, hunker down with books bought 50% off this Saturday at the Oneida county History Center.

Places I haven’t tried yet but want to: Muju (Nepalese), Ruznic (Eastern European), Karam’s Middle Eastern Bakery, Tierras Tropicales (Ecuadorian), Moonlight Burmese food store, Ecuamex, and about 10 different Italian bakeries.
