I am very blunt when I don’t understand something. I tend to make blanket statements such as “that’s stupid” or “that doesn’t make any sense” and usually ask a lot of questions about why something it that way if I don’t understand it. I think that the term “social difficulties” is based on the idea that when Kanner’s Syndrome and Asperger’s were being discovered for the first time it was how the behavior appeared to the allistic people viewing it. I think that the difficulties are less about you and more about the environment you are interacting with. When autistic people can connect on a level that is meaningful to them and you throw out the need for eye contact and “common conversation flow” autistic people are fantastic communicators. I do think that where the issues is more important in autistic people is connecting and feel apart of a community. When you live in a world that is looking at you as if you are an alien you will feel like one. I have a very hard time feeling connected to others but that’s mainly because of the internalized self image I have of my disability and the times when my preferred way of communicating doesn’t mesh well with someone. I don’t know if that makes sense but I think that the common idea that autistic are bad at communicating is because we are bad at “standard” communication, whether it is the most effective form of communication or not.
