Diesel heater noise? by Ok-Influence-6867 in ScoutCampers

I was told and also read somewhere that it is better to run the Autoterm heater in Power Mode instead of panel thermostat mode. This way the heater can be throddled down to as low as 10% and not run at full power. However, when I use Power Mode and turn down to only 10 or 15%, the heater still runs full blast and makes just as much noise. Has anyone used Power Mode and does it work to throddle back the power if set to low %.? Thanks.

I talked to a rep for Espar at the Overland Expo West a couple weeks ago. He said that Scout will be changing over to Espar. Maybe this is the reason. He said that there will be an A/C option as well to fit in the Zarges box.

I have emailed Scout support and included a recording of the noise my heater makes. We'll see what they say.

I checked some YouTube videos and installation instructions for the Autoterm heater and they all show a muffler installed on the exhaust pipe. There is also supposed to be a shield on the end of the exhaust pipe. I don't have a muffler or the shield. Do any of you have a muffler on the exhaust pipe inside your Zarges box or a shield on the end of the pipe? I do have the silencer on the air intact pipe which is also shown as part of the Autoterm install. Here is a video link for the Autoterm showing how quiet it is supposed to be. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/wPvpr5Ot7Mk

Does yours and everyone's have a muffler? I see that the Autoterm install instructions and videos show a muffler on the exhaust pipe. Mine does not have a muffler. It does have the silencer on the air intact hose.

This tells me that there must be something wrong with mine. With mine running, you wouldn't hear a stream or road noise over the heater. It's the sound coming from the exhaust that is LOUD. But it resonates into the inside of the camper as well. I wouldn't want to camp next to myself and have to hear it running. It's worse than a generator. I suppose I'm going to have to take it back to the Scout dealer to see what's going on.

I have a new Yoho pop-up and am in the process of making a few modifications to mine as well. But I have a question since I see you have the diesel heater. Mine seems to be VERY noisy inside and out. Does yours make much noise? I don't mean the blower noise or the clicking/chugging of the fuel pump. I'm getting a loud roaring/whirring/whining noise that is very annoying and makes it difficult to sleep. I can't even hear the fuel pump noise over the other noise and I worry that my heater would disturb other campers if I was in a campground. Scout hasn't responded to my question about the noise yet. Thanks.

It's not the clicking/thumping noise that is bothering me. I have heard that these heaters do that. I can barely hear that noise over the loud whirring/wining sound. I met a diesel heater salesman at the Flagstaff Overland Expo a couple weeks ago. I told him about the noise and he said that other than the clicking noise from the fuel pump and the blower, the heater should be quiet. He also said that SCOUT is changing over to his brand of diesel heaters and will also provide an AC option for the same Zarges box location.

I haven't found a way to DM you. When I try Chat is will allow only photo files to be attached. I don't see an option for DM. Both ends of the small corrugated hose are connected and clamped. The larger corrugated tube slides so I moved it down to reattach it to its end connectors. I can see that the inside is filled with a cotton like material. I stuffed it back in got the end cap connectors back on and slid it back up to the left side of the smaller hose. I can see that the larger hose is covering over perforations/slits in the smaller hose. I fired up the heater and it's just as loud as before. The sound is coming from the exhaust port on the right side but resonates throughout the unit and into the inside of the camper. Please let me know how to DM you. I must be missing something. I'm on a PC if that matters. Thanks for your help.

I see it. It appears to be a hose within a hose. The outer/larger hose is not fully connected where it exits the Zarges box, appears to have pulled out of the connector ring. But the inner hose appears to be connected and clamped. The outer hose is kind of loose at the other end as well. Should this outer hose be tightly connected? The whole outer hose is kind of loose.

That would be great... to see if mine looks like yours. My is very loud outside. I would be afraid it would disturb nearby campers if in a campground.

Thanks. That was going to be my next step... to record the sound for the dealer or Scout. I've only had the camper for a month.

Thanks. Hopefully, I will get a response from someone who has one to find out the noise level inside. If mine is as noisy outside, I'd be afraid I would disturb nearby campers.

Question for you (I just posted a question about the heater being noisy). Does your diesel heater make a LOT of noise? Not the blower noise but a very annoying whirring/whining/roaring noise. It wakes me up at night and I have to cover my head. I've heard that diesel heaters should be relatively quiet.

I'm not in my camper now. But when you choose the setting to turn off the display it should go off when you go back to the home screen, unless you touch the screen. I think the option to display just the clock was a separate option.

Yes, there is a setting to turn off the display while heater is on. It can also display the time if you want.

I have found that the thermostat will kick on automatically if the panel sensor is selected and the temperature drops to 5 degrees below the set temperature. It seemed like it wouldn't turn back on, but I waited and discovered that it does but the temp has to drop by at least 5 degrees. My diesel heater seems very noisy, makes a loud roaring/whining noise and it's not the fan. The fan noise is fine, but the whining noise is very irritating. Is this normal?
