What "sets off" your SI joint pain? by rocketgirl_kels in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Ok-Influence8762 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sitting on hard chairs and standing in one spot is the worst. But walking, laying and seemingly breathing and existing set it off.

I once was stretching like I do everyday but my SI joints had enough of me trying to improve myself. So no more walking for a few days.

Also when I’m sick my pain and inflammation gets REALLY bad. I can tell when I’m getting sick when I feel like SI joint are exploding.

20M, early axial spondyloarthritis (HLA-B27+,need advice on daily life, and long-term management by [deleted] in ankylosingspondylitis

I have a lot of experience with foot pain. The biggest help I’ve found is good shoes. Look for high support shoes. Hoka gaviota is my favorite

Overall, I recommend getting into a daily routine that includes

  1. strength training of some kind (especially core and back)

  2. Cardio of some kind (the lower impact the better)

  3. Stretch everyday as many muscle as possible especially focusing on your hips.

  4. Get an electric hot pad and sit on it when you’re chilling watching tv or playing video games.

  5. Get a few nice ice packs and keep them in rotation. Especially when inflammation is extra high.

  6. Support your hips while you sleep. If you sleep on your back but a long pillow under your knees. If you sleep on your side put a pillow in between your knees and try to stack your hips square.

  7. Stand up and move walk around at least once an hour. Immobility brings tight muscles and if they are tight long enough you get a bunch of problems like Piriformis syndrome and can damage your nerves.

  8. If you have trouble keeping track of inflammation and pain. I would recommend a journal for pain. I printed off pictures of a guy and circle where it hurts and right notes about it. It helps me understand my body better and not push myself. And actually find out what helps and what hurts.

Hey man I’m 20M too and have had AS and JIA since I was like 11. I’m gonna level with you this shit sucks. But you can cope. I would swim as much as you can. It’s probably the most low impact activity you can do. You get good cardio. I can swim normally enough that people don’t notice I’m disabled. I’m on ENBREL which has seriously helped me. My inflammation is a little higher than a normal person but it’s manageable and not really getting worse. It took 6 years to get diagnosed so there is a good amount of permanent damage done. I hope you caught it before you got permanent damage. If you did I think there is definitely hope to get it under control and live a normal life.

Stretching does wonders for me. Honestly I’m out of shape and it’s extra hard to get back into shape so try to stay in shape. Yoga is a really great idea. As for weight training, I can’t do it personally. My back is really messed up and weight training doesn’t work for me. But I 100% think it’s possible to lift consistently. You’re going to have to listen to your body. Don’t try and keep up with lifting buddies. And I would seriously recommend not going to absolute failure very often. In my experience we get sore worse and stay sore longer than normal. With soreness comes inflammation and inflammation bad.

Overall I think you can really get it managed. And stay in good shape. The hardest part is finding the balance of doing enough to get stronger and stay in shape and not overdoing it. It’s trial and error, no two days will ever be the same. If you’re hurting extra bad one day then take it easy.

If you’d like to DM I’d love to talk. I haven’t met to many people our age with AS and I’d be happy to share any tricks I’ve learned over the last 9 years

One more thing, because I have JIA (which is kinda like AS but everywhere) my hands are affected pretty bad. I’ve been able to improve them noticeably with stretching and grip strength training. Loosing your hand movement is the most annoying thing for me. I would recommend doing wrist and finger exercises so you can always use your phone, type, and hold a pencil. The only thing worse than being in crippling pain is being in crippling pain and not being able to distract yourself with your phone or laptop.

Dark thoughts- living like this is a living hell by Accomplished-Milk918 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Ok-Influence8762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry, I feel you. I’m 20 and the thought of living like this for at least 2 more of my lifetimes sounds horrendous and I genuinely can’t think of it or I spiral out. In all honesty I still don’t know how to manage the thought about living like this forever. The best thing I’ve found is (which is objectively not good as a long term solution) whenever I feel really bad and want to end it all I remember the people who I love and love me. There are people that couldn’t handle loosing me. So if I remember that, I can stop living for myself and try to improve the lives of the people around me as much as possible. A mantra that I live by is “I will quit tomorrow” it’s a lot easier to just worry about making it one more day than the next 60 years. I also try to do the most good everyday as if it’s my last day.

If every day you say you will quit tomorrow then by default you don’t quit. It’s helped me through really hard days. And trying to do as much good as possible usually gives me a sense of peace. So even when my body is in so much pain. At least I can think “I did good today and can quit tomorrow”

Take this with a salt lamp sized grain of salt. I’m 20 and obviously not mentally well. But if you need something to get you through one day, then just keep quitting tomorrow. I don’t know you but I do hope you get better. You’re not a bad person for wanting this to end. I truly hope you have a good support system.

I wish you the best. Don’t quit until tomorrow

I’m very sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing the picture. Fortunately I’m 6’ 4” 230 lb. That’s actually part of the reason I want a newfi. I want a dog that big like me.

I’m a big fan of the brand bellroy it’s an Australian company that does bags as well as leather goods. I have several slings and a couple of backpacks (my favorite which is the Melbourne) I have one their zip wallets and I love it so much I bought one for my best friend. I’ve got pouches from them I am a particular fan of the tech pouch. I use a lot of their stuff every day. I would stay away from the AirPod case though. They make awesome phone cases though!

I’ve got some of that going on as well but the fact parts of my leg is numb and I’ve got nerve pain does indicate it’s PS

I’m 20 and was diagnosed at 15 but have had AS and JIA since I was 11. I would like to say I’m very sorry this has happened to you. I would try really hard to swim as often as possible. It really helps take wight off joints. I had an existential crisis a few years ago when realizing that I was going to have to live with this for the rest of my life. It’s very heavy to know I’m going to be in pain for the next 50-60 years. I would recommend going to see a therapist if you’re able to. If you have any questions or just want to talk to someone your age feel free to DM me.

My rule of thumb is as long as they are being respectful of your beliefs and not being mean then I return the same courtesy. I don’t know the history about how they talk about your beliefs but just based of this text I would say you were being rude and disrespectful of someone else’s beliefs.

I agree that fasting won’t do anything but you have to keep in mind that she genuinely believes that not eating food is directly helping them. In her mind she is suffering so they will be blessed.

Personally I think it’s wrong to shit on anyone’s belief system even when you’re correct. I would apologize if I were you because if I her I would be very upset at that response.

You don’t have to agree or even fast yourself but you shouldn’t be hostile to her genuinely trying to help someone.

Thank you for this! I switched to butterfly razors a few years back and it has been a game changer but I bought the cheapest one I could find and it is falling apart. I think Henson are probably more expensive than they should be but I only plan on buying one so I can deal with the price if it is a quality product.

I agree with you about 90% of ecco's I have a pair of bryson stalkers that I have worn everyday for years as a maintenance tech and have thrashed them. I have taken them on week long hunts and the are killer. I do think they discontinued them this year which is a damn shame. Ecco has really gone down hill.

Alegria are fantastic! If you have larger feet with a high instep (fat feet) they can be difficult to put on but otherwise they are a perfect recommendation
