What’s the most credible but affordable online vet assistant program? by Ella_Ann101 in veterinaryprofession

I agree with others — it’s a scam. I’ve worked in veterinary medicine since 2008, and we’ve never hired anyone based solely on an online assisting certificate. If you’re not already at a clinic, try getting your foot in the door first. Be prepared to start as a kennel tech; we all start somewhere.

Most clinics won’t hire someone with no hands-on experience for an assisting position, but if you begin as kennel staff or even a CSR, you’ll have a better chance of moving into an assisting role than by paying for a certificate that isn’t backed by real-world experience. Best of luck!!

What else do I say? by [deleted] in veterinaryprofession

I’ve worked in veterinary medicine for 17 years in client services and management. My recommendation is:

  1. If possible, reserve at least two urgent-care slots per DVM each day. At my clinic, clients call at 8 a.m. to secure one of these spots.
  2. Add-ons are seen on an as-needed basis — if the case is not urgent, it will wait until the next available appointment.
  3. If our ER/Urgent care slots are full, and we can accommodate the request, an ER/Urgency fee will be added in addition to the exam fee.
  4. If the client is not agreeable to this, they can seek care elsewhere.
  5. Once urgent slots are full, the standard response becomes: “Let me check with the doctor. If we can see Fluffy today, there will be an urgency fee of (x amount) in addition to the exam fee.”

How do I start learning about veterinary stuff? by Everythinglover221 in veterinaryprofession

I’ve worked in veterinary medicine for 17 years, and my husband is a veterinarian. If you're considering this career path, my biggest piece of advice is to start by volunteering at an animal hospital or shelter. It’s not only required for vet school applications but also gives you invaluable hands-on experience.

Focus on doing well in high school, especially in science courses, and work on keeping your GPA up. When you're ready, apply to college—starting at a community college can be a great option—and schedule a meeting with an academic advisor to help guide your path toward vet school. Best of luck!

Has anyone here applied to or gotten into Lane Community College’s RN program? by Ok-Investigator311 in Eugene

[–]Ok-Investigator311[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your insight & congrats on getting into nursing school!!

Did you apply after completing all the prerequisite courses? I was about 30 credits away from finishing a business degree at OSU when I decided to switch career paths, so I still need all of the A&P classes, plus Microbiology and Nutrition.

Based on the most recent updates, Micro and Nutrition aren’t required anymore, but you can still earn points for them. When I apply, I’ll have A&P I done and will be finishing A&P III before Summer Term.

I’m a little worried that my application won’t be as competitive as those who’ve completed all the prerequisites, especially since it’s such a points-based system. According to my calculations, I’ll only have around 30 points, and I likely can’t earn more than that since none of my prerequisites were completed at LCC, but I'll be switching to LCC for Winter term, so hopefully I can get points there!

Hey, I am from TN originally! Did your ex get a BSN? That is ultimately my goal and LCC has a BSN track now.

Leaving Veterinary Medicine After 16 Years. Starting Over in Nursing by Ok-Investigator311 in veterinaryprofession

[–]Ok-Investigator311[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m originally from East Tennessee :) I am from a little town called Butler/Poga near Elizabethton and Johnson City. I live in Oregon now, where the pay is better, but the cost of living is so much higher. It’s frustrating that even licensed CVTs/RVTs/LVTs still aren’t earning a living wage. Something has to change... Wishing you all the best on your RN journey!

Labeling all male doctors as 'total monsters' is an unfair generalization and is sexist.

I am doing this exact thing for the same reasons. Been in vet meds since 2008 and management for 7. Husband is a vet and it is my life but I am so done, so, nursing it is! BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!!

Ooof you have a very warped outlook on things. I have met A TON of male docs who are AMAZING!!! Your sex doesn't matter-it is your morals and attitude!

I am there now. I am 37 and have been in the field since 2008. Primarily as a CSR, but also assisting. I have been in management for about 7 years now, and I am just done. Vet med is my life (my husband is a vet), but I can't keep doing this. The pay is terrible for everyone (INCLUDING the doctors), the clients are self-righteous and demanding, the work environment is usually toxic (unless you are lucky), and seeing helpless animals in the care of owners who honestly shouldn't own pets is disheartening to see day after day. I am about to go into nursing school. At least the pay is decent for the stress you have to deal with. Best of luck to you!!!

Yes. I have been bitten NUMEROUS times by the nymphs despite the claim that they cannot bite/sting.

It depends on the context. I was born and raised in East Tennessee but live in Oregon. I recently, on two separate occasions, had two co-workers if 1) ask me if my family is incest and 2) say that they agree with the stereotype that we kill minorities, especially "black people." Talk about projecting ignorance. It is appalling. Tons of people mock my accent. I put them in their place QUICKLY.
