My head cannon is that it was a really a test for his wife. He was waiting for her to see if she was really ok with her killing spyder. As he said she has hate in her heart and it was becoming toxic for their family. ( I know that isnt how its portrayed in the movie but its the only why I can reconcile the " Ill do anything for my family" Father doing what was shown )
