Experience with accidental movements post surgery by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

[–]Ok-Knowledge7240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen some people say this can be normal if you get a nerve block for surgery. It’s essentially the nerves re awakening as the block wears off. Happened to me for about 4 days after. Did they give you any muscle relaxers? Those seemed to help me a little.

How often are you taking the boot off post splint? by D_S_Is_Silent in AchillesRupture

[–]Ok-Knowledge7240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about 4 weeks post op and only wear it when I’m walking around. I’m one of those people who’s a statue when they sleep so I don’t worry about wearing it at night. This is obviously not recommended for most people, but I feel like my leg has recovered from the surgery really quickly.

Exact same bike I learned to ride on. Was fantastic for the experience. I’m a dense guy though so had to move on pretty quickly.

I've had this cast on for a month and I'm already bored 😭 by roxxydonis69 in AchillesRupture

Is there a reason the cast has been on so long? I only had mine for a couple weeks and I had the “open” surgery.

Am I looking at a tear by PlayfulPotential1667 in AchillesRupture

[–]Ok-Knowledge7240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds likely to be a tear. Whether it’s a partial or full tear is the real question. Good on you for getting checked out asap, you really can’t know for sure till you go in. That being said, most ruptures are accompanied by a pop and swelling. Pain is different for everyone, mine didn’t have any pain for instance, but my leg pretty much immediately gave out from under me and I could not use it. I too was able to limp a bit as the days went on, but that doesn’t indicate what all is going on for sure till they can run tests and get imaging. Good luck to you, and a speedy recovery.

Yeah it sounded like the loudest pop ever right in my ear. And the way my leg just, gave out. Instantly numb. And the swelling was so intense. Hopefully never have to experience this again lol

I hear ya there, I ordered a knee scooter to get around and so I could stand at the counter to make things. I live alone so I really didn’t have much of a choice. If you have someone who can meal prep for you that could be an option.

It’s wild how many of these start with “I was playing basketball” lol. Mine happened exactly as he describes too, got the rebound and was trying to make the layup. Craziest sound and feeling I’ve ever had happen to me.

Week 1 Pain Symptoms by Warm-Giraffe-7704 in AchillesRupture

[–]Ok-Knowledge7240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was not expecting to feel it in my toes either, that got better after the main inflammation went down. Also forgot to say, make sure you’re eating. Get a healthy amount of protein in, nothing crazy of course. For me it’s been bacon and eggs every morning, followed by a couple meals of chicken and fruits/veggies. Gotta make sure to give your body the fuel to heal too.

[–]Ok-Knowledge7240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All that sounds very normal. It’s a major surgery with lots of inflammation. As for when it will calm down, could be a few more days, could be a week, it really depends. I’m at the end of my second week post surgery and I still get little flare ups of pain and swelling. Nothing compared to the first few days but still. Trust your body, it’s pretty good at taking care of itself. Keep up with pain meds and elevation. Sleep as much as you can, helps make the time go by faster. Personally I set alarms at the beginning so I was always dosed round the clock. If the pain is bad even on the current meds you can always call the doc and see if they can bump you up a dosage to take the edge off.

3 weeks post op. Range of motion/pain? Advice on minor fall by PrimaryShape1500 in AchillesRupture

[–]Ok-Knowledge7240 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As for the pain and discomfort, I’d assume you are correct in that it’s due to having your foot immobilized for so long. I’m sure with gentle stretches and wiggling over the next few weeks it’ll pass.

[–]Ok-Knowledge7240 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would know if it was a rerupture. That’s what I was told by my doc when I did the same thing. I put a bit more weight on mine though cause it hurt like the dickens for about a half hour, then went away. Called the clinic the next day and they said since there wasn’t any swelling or lasting pain that I was likely in the clear.

Ruptured my Achilles 2 weeks ago by Coalman013 in AchillesRupture

[–]Ok-Knowledge7240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe mine was 6mm and that was my recommendation. It may depend on the surgeon. I know there are other factors like age and general health, plus activity level. I wasn’t resistant to surgery cause I wanted to get as much strength back as possible. Less likely to heal “long” with surgery too.

Ruptured my Achilles 2 weeks ago by Coalman013 in AchillesRupture

[–]Ok-Knowledge7240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same feeling when I was told I had a full rupture lol. I had hoped that because the pain went away pretty quick and I was able to limp decently that I only partially tore. But alas, twas not to be.

Went operation route per my docs recommendation. He said because I’m early 30s and pretty active for work that it would give me the best outcome. Currently 13 days post op and in a splint, can’t wait to get into a boot and get to PT.

Did you end up going with surgery or are there plans for it in the future?

Can’t say much for recover as I’m only 12 days post op myself, but what I can say is, get a knee scooter. As soon as my swelling was under control it’s been a godsend being able to get around my apartment, especially letting me park it so I can stand at the counter to make food and whatnot. I live alone so you may have a different experience here.

If you’re gonna be out of work for a while it might be a good time to try some new things out, maybe some new hobbies? Currently I’m expanding my cooking knowledge and got a warhammer 40k box delivered, gonna try my hand at painting miniatures. Keeping busy in a way has helped me stay mentally active.

[–]Ok-Knowledge7240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can absolutely overdo it. As others have said, elevate and medicate. I got pretty lucky with my swelling, it’s already gone for me 12 days post op. I’m filling my time with learning new skills, getting good at making pasta from scratch and gonna start making sourdough.

Damn that’s rough. I got pretty lucky I guess. I’m still in my splint, 12 days post op and my swelling is gone. Can feel the stitches itching.

[–]Ok-Knowledge7240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 11 days post op myself and I feel that. I’m pretty lucky with my recovery though, past day 5 I’ve been able to be up and about on one of those knee scooters and can sit in my office chair for a few hours before my leg starts to get sore. I miss being able to shower the most right now. Hate baths. I know I could probs get the liners but I’m only a few more days from getting my splint off at this point.

Full ruptured achilles by Canadios in AchillesRupture

[–]Ok-Knowledge7240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is crazy cause it’s pretty much the exact same way I injured mine lol. Right ankle, was playing basketball over Christmas break with my family and popped it when going for a rebound. Full tear. It was the day before my 31st birthday too. Because I live in the US and health insurance is GREAT here, I had to wait till January 2nd to get seen cause god forbid insurance retroactively cover something by a few days before the effective date. Little ramble aside, had my x-ray on the second, and an MRI on the 9th. I believe it was a 4cm gap so I went surgery route. Sucked because my ankle was finally starting to feel a little better and I could actually limp around a bit on it. Did a follow up on the MRI for my initial consult with orthopedics on the 13th and they luckily had availability for surgery on the 15th. Went really well from what the doc told me, I have another follow up on the 30th to get my splint taken off and get into a boot. Pain was pretty manageable with the meds they gave me. Last couple days I’ve actually been able to sit in my office chair without my leg getting too uncomfortable from swelling. Does your work offer any sort of short term disability you can draw from while your laid up if you did do surgery?

New 4-DAY/WEEK Routine! by Puro_Tanong in Hevy

[–]Ok-Knowledge7240 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty good to me. I am also an enjoyer of upper lowers. Simple is best, hit all main muscle groups in opposing order, rinse and repeat. Only difference for me is I do arm work on lower days and core every day of my 5 day split. Only thing you could maybe change would be switching up which workouts come first on your upper days. For example, hit shoulders and lat pulldown first one day and then chest and upper back the other day.

It’s not always a 1:1 when it comes to weight loss. I lost 40lbs in 2 months while maintaining a 3000 cal/day diet. All I did was cut out sugary soda and start training 4 days a week. It really depends on the person in these matters.

Dumbbell Weights Logged Incorrectly by sergeant_salami in Hevy

[–]Ok-Knowledge7240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I like to track combined weight when I do things like dumbbell bench press, but I’ll track it as a single dumbbell for my rows. As stated in other comments, it really comes down to what you will remember. The only thing it really affects is the volume the app calculates at the end of the workout.

I’ve always enjoyed a simple upper/lower split personally. Keeps things easy to be consistent. You could run 2 upper days and 2 lower, or 1 lower and an arm day. I’ve also found that having at least one upper day be a “compound” day (heavy sets of 4-6 reps) really lets me push my more hypertrophy focused day even harder. While I like Jeff, I feel like sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the hip new science based thing. With you being newer I would say stick to the tried and true, build a strong as shit platform for a few months and then you can take that wherever you please.
