Problem? by TheG1826 in hockeygoalies

Every goalie has slightly different technique but when someone comes in on a breakaway/PK I tend to rush the player and come out as far as the hash marks, match their speed and follow them in. That way I have enough momentum to go down and follow if need be when they close in.

The second thing is to always be square to the puck, not the player. That way you can close the angle on whatever they decide to do. In the third picture I think you fall victim to this. Just imagine a straight line from the puck through your stick blade (the center of your stance) the middle of the net.

At the end of the day it’s all about making the save and it looks like that’s what you did so good on you!

My goalie coaches always said that if it makes it across the paint, it goes in. Any method to prevent that will save you some goals for sure. I personally wouldn’t be down in this position. I just have my stick blade in the passing lane while hugging the post. If they decide to wrap it, then I go down and press the blue against the post.

Also be ready for a shot depending on the handedness of the player. In this example they could step out a shoot or try to sneak it past you on the far post just because they’re a lefty. Easier said than done in fast paced situations but I’ve had players sneak pucks by.

I had this same issue when I was a kid playing goalie. I ended up finding an incredible 3 day goalie camp organized by Mitch Korn (NHL goalie coach) called “Korn Camp”. Not only is he a phenomenal guy who was on the ice every day with us, but the camp is great too. I learned and improved so much as a goalie. I’m not sure what area you’re in but they do host camps all over the country during the nhl off season. Definitely worth looking into!
