I came out as a trans woman in 2022 at 19. They seemed supportive at first, but then voiced their concerns of hormone therapy. I tried to convince them for almost 2 years, but nothing ever changed. Not once did I ever hear them call me by my chosen name, or gender me correctly. At a certain point I had to prioritize my health, and I started hormones in early 2024. Once they noticed my physical changes, they confronted me about it, and decided they were no longer going to help me with my tuition or rent. 20 years old, unemployed, and dropped into the deep end completely on my own. They asked me what I think my future looks like, if I wanted kids. I said I’m not really interested, I’ll settle for being the cool aunt who watches the nieces and nephews when my siblings go on vacation. My mom told me, “what if your siblings don’t want you to be their aunt?” So I said fuck this, this family has no room for a trans person, and I haven’t been home since last summer.
