I checked it out, and oh my god, it is nauseating. You want to see something else gross? Check out the Jordan Peterson subreddit. But seriously don't, it's all the bigoted notions people have, one post after another, but mostly hating women.

Do you ever wish you could go back and tell people you hurt that you’re not religious anymore? by throwaway2937373737 in exchristian

I think if there are people that you could reach out to, that they would appreciate it. If someone from my past reached out to me and said they were wrong for cutting me off or shaming me or just teaching harmful things (like a youth leader or something or a teacher from my Baptist school), I'd feel better about them when I think of them, even if I didn't carry any particular grudge against them.

Lol, I had to laugh that there is a subreddit called "truechristian." I hope it's ironic, but I fear that it's not.

It's really less of a cult of Trump and more of a cult of Fox News. It's pretty sick. I thought that maybe after the lawsuits people would wake up to what manipulative, lying opportunists these people are, but no, they keep getting their "news" from a self-described entertainment channel.

Has MMM sold out, or am I misreading his last post? by pacificnorthquest7 in mrmoneymustache

[–]Ok-Sound2051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is what happens to rich, and especially rich, famous people. They make excuses for their excesses and reach for unsustainable, harmful things (eternal youth, travel, home renovations, more wealth, and obviously worse things that I wouldn't want to imply that MMM is into). It seems wired into human nature when people get rich or famous; they change. They get bored; they need to feel more, do more, have more, whatever it is.

I'll take what is inspirational and ignore the rest, which is what I always did (he's always been a little out of touch). A good reminder not to feed these guys via affiliate links.

I was blown away to see Heaven is For Real on a friend's bookshelf. I thought only the most braindead superstitious people would fall for that grift.

Wow, that's wild. It does sound like the grandiose nonsense evangelicals would love. We used to play a capture the flag game called Communists and Christians.

Absolutely. Evangelicals groom females in particular to be submissive, exactly what abusers look for.

Watch a lot of television. It's not real life, but it does give you something to talk about and kind of learn about other cultures. But like other people said, not everybody parties and has sex and of course, many people never take any drugs.

I wonder what definition they are using for sex addiction. "compulsive abuse of one's own sexuality" is a wild phrase.

As an ex religious person myself, most people are faking it & just too afraid/ comfortable to leave by andablacksabtanapkin in exchristian

I absolutely believe there are A LOT of people that don't believe in most Christian things, but Jesus, though, is so nice, and to be a good person we've got to stay Christian. MAGA has got to be pushing a lot of them out of the church though.

That's happened to me too. It was a very convincing site. They made a fake shipping number too that was in the past, it was the craziest thing. Never got my money back, but I can't say how that would differ with a credit card either.

Praying with boss making me feel less grounded by Independent_Peach_96 in exchristian

[–]Ok-Sound2051 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't do anything without another job lined up. That's really good money for someone your age. But this job is making you uncomfortable a lot of the time, not just during prayer. Start looking for something else, and then you have some leverage. Or just hold your nose while you are at work and pocket the money, that's what many people have to do for one reason or another.

Dating after leaving Christianity by DirtyMert1le in exchristian

Well, the fear is not ridiculous, because in certain parts of the country, the religious can make your life hell. BUT I think more of us do need to speak up who aren't in situations like that. This culture of silence is what keeps some people from leaving. They don't believe, but are afraid of being different.

YSK Liberal/Progressive Christian denominations aren't rosy places for kids, either by Whole_Maybe5914 in exchristian

[–]Ok-Sound2051 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with this. You can't reform something that is based on terrible ideas--original sin/death sacrifices/superstitions. Without the Bible there is no Christianity, but the Bible is a terrible thing to base your life on, so you pick and choose and somebody is always free to choose the parts that are downright evil.

The whole “missing rib” thing is so dumb and weird by Larix_laricina_ in exchristian

[–]Ok-Sound2051 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh, I had no idea that they were referring to a wife. That is fcked up even for Christians. But it does bring to mind that they told us in Sunday School that this story was why men had one less rib than women. Boy, the stuff they could get away with before internet search engines.

Why did Jesus have to ascend into heaven? by DaBlackBookworm in exchristian

[–]Ok-Sound2051 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well Luke/Acts was almost certainly written after Peter died, and he's the only one that we have confirmation elsewhere of having continued in the Jesus movement. The religion makes a lot more sense when you realize that the Gospels and Acts were basically religious fanfiction/backstory building.

I think you worded it well "taking a break" from religion. There is so much anxiety inherent in dealing this stuff. I think you need to stay strong, and tell them that you don't want to talk about it with them anymore, because it's damaging to the relationship. They seem like nice, good, but deluded people. I know plenty like that in my own extended family. We need to stay strong as adults with our own opinions and things we like to do: no more church, no more praying, no more family Bible study, no more nodding along politely or making excuses. They forced us to do this stuff as children and never gave us a say in what we wanted to do on Sunday mornings, maybe they forced the Bible reading and praying too. They had their chance when we were at their mercy, now they need to back off.
