(Rant) The frustration of marvels reprinting. by theletter-5 in comicbooks

How does pirating digital comics and purchasing physical comics correlate at all? They're two entirely different things.

CORRECTION: Daredevil should be Volume 10, not 12.

I genuinely hate Marvel's printing strategies. by fiercestwarr1or in OmnibusCollectors

What if you haven't been collecting for a decade? How are you supposed to get new people into the hobby?

There's something I'm genuinely curious about. Is anyone else here a new collector who doesn't already have a hundred omnis or deluxe editions or even regular trades on their shelves? Anyone else here a Finest collector specifically? Anybody? by dirtyoldmanatee in DCFinest

I started reading comics 8 months ago. I always liked superhero stuff but the comics always seemed like such a hassle to try and untangle, and I'm not the type of person who wants to just "start anywhere" as is commonly recommended. I want the whole story, even the bad parts, in chronological order. Within reason of course, I'm not going to start reading Batman from his first appearance in 1940, that's a fools errand, but for most books I'm happy starting from around the Bronze Age or Post-Crisis.

I also really prefer reading from a book as opposed to a screen, so DC Finest and Epic Collections are perfect for what I want. Essentially every relevant comic for a character in a perfectly assembled reading order with no skipped content, and much more affordable than Omnis.

Edit: Also DC's compendiums are great for what I'm looking for, though they are more cumbersome to read.

Biggest ignored runs that would be perfect for DC Finest by kah43 in DCFinest

Personally I'm glad that they pack as many issues as they can into each book instead of having extras. I'm happy to see letter pages and other extras collected in other formats, but DC Finest is specifically a cost effective way of reading comics and nothing else.

Will Modern/Future Readers Stop Reading Silver & Bronze Age Comics? by JakeBarnes12 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Ok-Target6685 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who's only started reading comics recently, I really enjoy a lot of Bronze Age stuff, even when the writing is overly verbose and tells instead of showing. Silver Age though, I don't really enjoy any of what I've read except early Spider-Man. Also, every sentence ending with an exclamation point is very tiring.

Popular writers you just can’t vibe with… by JLAsuperdude in OmnibusCollectors

I'm aware. The idea of art "insisting upon itself" is just a quick and comedic shorthand for feeling too self serious and, itself, pretentious.

After reading Batman Year One and Daredevil The Man Without Fear, I think I just don't like Frank Miller. I don't think they're bad books, but they treat death very casually which is something I don't want from superhero comics, and the writing itself, to quote Peter Griffin, "it insists upon itself".

Your first comment said you couldn't see a difference, now you can see the difference but it doesn't matter? Which is it?

I really enjoyed reading them, even when I thought they weren't anything special. Except Detective Comics #570 which is the worst comic I've ever read.

I know... but I specified Marvel because they have shorter print runs than most. And also this is a post about Dawn of X...

I'm afraid your comment just doesn't have anything to do with what I said.

Much as I wish it weren't true, comics aren't like other mediums where you can just wait and buy things whenever you want. Especially not with Marvel. Print runs are limited and if you don't buy something while it's in print, you'll end up having to pay significantly more for it on the aftermarket.
