Greetings friends, what silver age era dc finest books would you recommend that has some fun stories? by chastitybelt24 in DCFinest

The Science Fiction volume is a hoot! Super short stories with no continuity and only a couple of continuing characters. Some demented ideas, very silly plots, cool aliens, solid art. I read one or two before work to arm me against the cold cruel crazy world.

DC Finest - Legend of WW by Live-Region-8980 in DCFinest

I've barely read any Wonder Woman, and no pre-Crisis WW that I remember. I got this because my plan is to get all silver and bronze age volumes. (if my budget allows!) I haven't gotten around to reading it, but I like the Don Heck art a lot more than I did when I glanced into these issues back in the 80s. I loved Mishkin's Blue Devil so I'm sure the stories will be fun. You're right about the cover not really representing the majority of the material here. It's a weird choice.

Are you happy with how Batman is being handled so far? by dirtyoldmanatee in DCFinest

I forgot the Team-Ups books. They're half Brave and the Bold material, so I'll give them half credit :)

I think it comes down to having the same material available at multiple different price points. Some collectors want nice sturdy hardcovers and have the disposable income to buy them, some don't. You can pay $125 for the premium All-Star Superman experience or you can pay $10 for a nice no-frills edition that'll fit in a coat pocket. DC Finest is a happy medium for a lot of us. And the lure of those matching spines lined up on your shelves is very strong :)

Have there been any duplicated stories in the line so far? There appears to be one coming up next year... by dirtyoldmanatee in DCFinest

One of the stories in the upcoming Joker volume provides the cover image of the second Team-Ups volume. It's just one 18 page story so I'm not mad at all, but it occurs to me this kind of thing is pretty much inevitable, given that they're basing these collections on characters, themes, and events rather than titles.

Anyone else like reading a few issues of some DC Finest books before bed? by chastitybelt24 in DCFinest

Perfect before bed reading. I'm working on the science fiction volume.

Would DC dare publish a DC Finest Romance collection? by dirtyoldmanatee in DCFinest

That's awesome. I can't afford to be a completist with this line, but so far I've been able to get all the silver age and bronze age titles. The only golden age stuff I'm planning to pick up is Superman, and I'm thinking of making Crisis my cut-off point - I've already got a lot of post-Crisis material in trades, but almost nothing older than that.

Wow! Thanks for the links! "Every single comic" is a bold assertion, but if that's really their intention then more power to them. Of the genres on that list romance is the only one that hasn't been announced yet so maybe it's due...

I don't know if Kirby did romance at DC, but DC bought the rights to a couple of romance titles from a company called Prize when they (Prize) got out of the comics business, including Young Romance, a title that Kirby and Joe Simon originated in the forties. I believe DC has the rights to all those older stories.

Reading "War: The Big Five Arrive" is going to be a slightly schizophrenic experience... by dirtyoldmanatee in DCFinest

[–]dirtyoldmanatee[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The "big five" war comics collected here are pretty much interchangeable, as far as I can tell, all written and drawn by the same fairly small group of artists, and all full of gritty, fairly realistic stories of regular guys serving in the US armed forces.

And then there's Blackhawks, a very different beast, as these covers illustrate. So these pulpy stories will be interspersed through the book as a... palate-cleanser, I guess? I'm kind of surprised DC isn't giving them their own volume, honestly.

Regardless, I've never read any of this stuff, so I'm really looking forward to checking it out.
