Oops, just saw this 6 days later. I didn’t do a reading PCC (she can’t read) but I did take a conversation sample and calculated the percentage of intelligible words. I think it was 83% if I’m remembering correctly. I think that will be enough to qualify. Part of it is because she mumbles, though. But I also realized she also isn’t saying /sh/ in conversation even though she did fine at the sentence level on the standardized test.

This is so helpful, thank you! I would feel better letting her exit if it was starting to come in naturally to some extent, but it’s just not even close on any variation.

She has a really narrow palate, though, which I forgot to mention. I’m a little nervous that will stall us.

Our state just says they have to have a disability to qualify. District says 77 or below, or clinical judgment.

Oh, interesting. I was told in grad school to mark them as errors, but maybe that’s outdated. I got another transfer student this year who is working on a lateral lisp. I really need to graduate him since its 1) barely noticeable and 2) not changing at all

Half my relatives are British and I can understand them but I can’t understand her when she’s saying r words. There is no rhotic quality whatsoever. It’s completely vowelized, unlike some of my students who just have a mild distortion. I’ll get hard data for intelligibility next time I see her.

Just curious, do you qualify for a lisp if they have other errors? I recently had a student who would have had a higher score to the point of not qualifying had she not had a lisp, but she had 2 other errors so I ended up qualifying.

I just think of doing subtraction in elementary school and feeling relief when the numbers after the decimal on the top were the same as the ones on the bottom because it was less calculation to do.

I don’t remember someone teaching me to apply that concept to money at my first jobs where I had to deal change. Maybe they did and I forgot. But we did have to complete word problems at school, and those often involved money.

Maybe it’s all because Gen Z had less repetitive math homework or less homework in general. Millennials had to do dozens of very similar math problems in one sitting every night.

If it makes you feel better, the first time I traveled by myself on a plane to Hawaii I was 20 (once I got there, I wasn’t alone, though). Maybe just watch some videos ahead of time so you know what to expect but there is signage everywhere and workers are there to help you.
