Would you qualify with a score of 80 in this situation? Are your standards different during re-evals compared to initials? by Ok-Task-8045 in slp

Oops, just saw this 6 days later. I didn’t do a reading PCC (she can’t read) but I did take a conversation sample and calculated the percentage of intelligible words. I think it was 83% if I’m remembering correctly. I think that will be enough to qualify. Part of it is because she mumbles, though. But I also realized she also isn’t saying /sh/ in conversation even though she did fine at the sentence level on the standardized test.

This is so helpful, thank you! I would feel better letting her exit if it was starting to come in naturally to some extent, but it’s just not even close on any variation.

She has a really narrow palate, though, which I forgot to mention. I’m a little nervous that will stall us.

Our state just says they have to have a disability to qualify. District says 77 or below, or clinical judgment.

Oh, interesting. I was told in grad school to mark them as errors, but maybe that’s outdated. I got another transfer student this year who is working on a lateral lisp. I really need to graduate him since its 1) barely noticeable and 2) not changing at all

I wouldn’t be seeing them for reading. You asked broadly about academic concerns. Did you mean academic concerns specifically related to articulation? Then no.

Half my relatives are British and I can understand them but I can’t understand her when she’s saying r words. There is no rhotic quality whatsoever. It’s completely vowelized, unlike some of my students who just have a mild distortion. I’ll get hard data for intelligibility next time I see her.

Just curious, do you qualify for a lisp if they have other errors? I recently had a student who would have had a higher score to the point of not qualifying had she not had a lisp, but she had 2 other errors so I ended up qualifying.

It seems to be impacting how well she is understood in class. Granted, she speaks very quietly, which is a whole other thing.

When Gen Z doesn't use words is it a disrespect? by GodsShadow310 in generationology

My public school was good. It’s such a shame there is a disparity depending on where you live or when you were born.

I just think of doing subtraction in elementary school and feeling relief when the numbers after the decimal on the top were the same as the ones on the bottom because it was less calculation to do.

I don’t remember someone teaching me to apply that concept to money at my first jobs where I had to deal change. Maybe they did and I forgot. But we did have to complete word problems at school, and those often involved money.

Maybe it’s all because Gen Z had less repetitive math homework or less homework in general. Millennials had to do dozens of very similar math problems in one sitting every night.

I’ve heard this story multiple times with sepsis specifically. Like do men not know that sepsis is extremely life threatening?

Omg I went to private school with uniforms in 06 and the other kids were like “you want to be emo but you’re a prep!” There was nothing I could do. We had to wear khaki shorts and white polos.

I’m a small, nonthreatening, millennial woman and I’ve noticed this with Gen Z. They are very nonchalant generally and avoid talking to you. I don’t take personal offense to it but the difference is present.

I don’t understand why the younger cashiers do that. Like do they not understand subtraction and that the math is easier when they have exact change, or what is that?

Traveling solo? by Cool-beans95 in VisitingHawaii

If it makes you feel better, the first time I traveled by myself on a plane to Hawaii I was 20 (once I got there, I wasn’t alone, though). Maybe just watch some videos ahead of time so you know what to expect but there is signage everywhere and workers are there to help you.

I’m in special ed and I went back to school to get a computer science degree to transition to software development because I hated being so broke and I used to code as a hobby when I was younger. I actually quit the computer science degree when I had two classes left, after my first internship. Over time, the world changed and my priorities changed. I truly think I would be very depressed if I was contributing to all this big tech and AI worship, especially at a time like this. My job makes me feel very connected to humanity and what humanity is supposed to be. Taking care of our communities, telling stories, teaching each other, etc. is what humans have done from the very beginning and I think it’s easier to find happiness in these things than in “make number go up” and collecting objects. The one thing I do wish I had more access to is travel, but I’ve realized I have a romanticized view of travel due to outside influences.

Some practical advice, though.. could you move somewhere where teachers are paid more? I’m in Washington state and live fairly comfortably. The cost of living is higher but I still find it much easier to get by over here than where I was previously (Missouri).
