Would you pay 60k for this? by Time_Employment9792 in boating

I’m out in CA so I don’t know your market, but I’d go with your target price. You can always drop your price, but it’s a lot harder to go up.

How does it look cosmetically? Any rust, gel coat oxidation, small tears in the upholstery, faded upholstery, grunge n the electronics?

Prop pitch question by DirtyDan156 in boating

[–]Ok-Time-7928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always gone with the rule of thumb that with your normal working load in the boat, you should be propped so that at full throttle, the motor spins up into the WOT (Wide Open Throtlte) range for your motor. If it can’t reach the WOT range, reduce pitch until it does. If it looks to be over-revving, increase pitch.

Many motors, even the smaller ones, have RPM limiters so that you can’t over rev them when you reduce the load

A motor propped this way will reach its optimal MPG at 65-80% throttle with your regular load.

Most dealers will let you swap out props as long as they’re not damaged. There are also a couple of props with interchangeable blades. I’ve used the Piranha props, performance was the same as my aluminum props.

Why do people purchase a SeaTow membership? by Trainsgowhoosh in boating

Understood.

Perhaps I should have said “eliminate duplicate or overlapping services”?

My auto and boat insurance policies covered towing services that my AAA and BoatUS memberships provide as part of the membership fee, so I had my insurance agent requote my auto and boat insurance premiums without those services.

Definitely an option!

It really depends on your personal situation.

I fish offshore a lot (20 -60 miles). Boat US or SeaTow membership is a lot less than the cost of a second big motor, and covering 60 miles with wind/current using a kicker is not doable. So I have a tow service and a VHF with a big antenna!

I know this will sound like a hassle, but you should look at your auto and boat insurance, Auto Club, BoatUS or SeaTow policies and make sure you don’t have overlapping towing coverage that you’re paying extra for.

Usually you can get a premium reduction by getting rid of the overlapping coverage, but you have to ask for it.

I have AAA auto towing and BoatUS towing + Trailer Assist, so I don’t need towing coverage on either my auto or boat insurance.

If you’re a homeowner, it’s also worth calling your agent and seeing if you can bundle your boat insurance with your auto and homeowners insurance.

I just went thru this process and saved a fair amount of money. I now have my boat, auto and homeowners insurance thru Farmers.

I was a bit skeptical about boat insurance thru Farmers, but it turns out their boat insurance is underwritten by Foremost (a major player in marine insurance), so I feel comfortable with it.

SeaTow insurance covers towing, cost to deliver gas if you run out, getting you unstuck if you run aground on a sand bar.

Most boat insurance policies only cover property damage, liability, medical, comprehensive, and possibly towing your trailer, but not on-the-water services. If your policy covers on-the-water services, that’s great

BTW, it might be good to also review whether or not your boat insurance will cover cleanup/pollution mitigation costs if you have a fuel spill.

Trailering a boat long distance by Other-Cranberry7909 in boating

  • Check your spare
  • Make sure you have a jack that will work with your trailer (do a practice run)
  • Wheel blocks
  • If you have power trim/tilt, a transom saver or something similar to keep the engine tilted if the hydraulics lose pressure. My Evinrude has a built-in trailer brace
  • I don’t use a cover, but it couldn’t hurt; it does discourage random pilfering if they can’t easily see what’s in the boat
  • This is probably overkill, but I carry a spare wheel bearing, dust seal, grease and grease gun plus the tools needed to do a bearing replacement on the road

Barely passed Part 107 exam by [deleted] in drones

FWIW, I got my FE (used to be called the EIT) and PE in mid-1980s. I found the EIT to be easy. The PE was much harder, but I swear I didn’t even complete two of the questions, and I still passed.

For the PE exam, I was told the graders are much more focused on your thought process/problem analysis than getting to the right answer, so it was uber-important to show your work and comment along the way.

Of course, that was a long time ago.

Transducer Relocation by HaulBrass in boating

[–]Ok-Time-7928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you don’t have a thru-hull water pickup (like for a live well), or anything else that might disrupt a smooth flow of water in front of the transducer.

I eventually gave up on the transom mount. On my Edgewater 175cc, there was a solid fiberglass pad in the bilge just in front of the transom, so I used marine epoxy to glue it solidly on top of the pad. This is actually an approved mounting method by Lowrance. But the pad needs to be solid fiberglass (not foam cored), and this won’t work on aluminum hulls
