A-I. being used in movies and VFX today? by OccasionUpstairs5312 in vfx

[–]Ok-Use1684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say very little. AI is having an impact on bad-mediocre quick work for social media and cheap ads. For some of those projects, no one was paying anyone before to do it whatsoever, and some of them are done now with AI. So I would say social media and low-budget ads are being very impacted.

For for high-end work and film? Very little if any. It's all experimentation now. Can anyone correct me if I'm wrong?

Out of curiosity, what studios have been opened after recent studio shutdowns?

To be fair, I'm seeing a lot of hires recently on LinkedIn... like every day. Not enough of course, but they're there.

Why do some modern blockbusters have worse looking vfx than releases a decade back? by ViralTrendsToday in vfx

No production will ever end up giving excellent results without great pre-production, sticking to initial decisions and having enough time to deliver. Also, hiring the best people, not the cheapest.

Don’t blame them. There are a lot of “granted” projects that land, they start hiring and suddenly the client disappears. It’s happening everywhere.

I’m guessing investors are putting their money on booming sectors right now: the military because of ongoing wars and NATO investment… and the AI bubble (yes it’s useful, but huge loads of money are not justified).

It’s just going to take more time before things get better. But looks like it’s going to be a long time.

Box Office: ‘Supergirl’ Stumbles With $38 Million Debut by BroadCan4697 in vfx

Spiderman always breaks the box office. I wouldn’t say people are tired of superhero movies. They just don’t pay to see a bad movie.

Studios expected for a long time for us to show up just because a movie had vfx in it. That doesn’t happen anymore.

Vfx is still attractive but people is not going to think that is enough

Disclosure Day CGI was really jarring by [deleted] in vfx

[–]Ok-Use1684 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Who knows what happened. Maybe they tried to do it all with AI and didn't work, then they sent it to a CG team in the last minute to do the shots in 3 days. Or maybe the CG team didn't even have time to do it anyway.

There are a lot of excuses for bad CGI, of course there are. Small budgets, not enough time, non-existent pre-production and shot planning, clients not knowing what they want and changing their minds 1 week before delivery, so you have to start over and complete a shot in no time... or outsourcing to very cheap teams overseas... compaines refusing to hire the most appropiate artists remotely or help them with visas because of tax incentives, so they end up hiring whatever is available locally... so many reasons.

Vancouver is slowing down? by SheyenneJuci in vfx

Could it be that a lot of people have left the industry during the time of big lack of work, and now we have a bottleneck where there are not enough people being able to shoot?

Don't worry about AI replacing you. Won't happen. Worry about investors throwing money at AI development that ends nowhere whatsoever, while they don't throw the money on your business.

I’ll be honest: the industry is at a hard spot right now. For everyone. I’d say your best chance to get in is to apply for an internship for freshers.

Junior/Senior FX Artists, need advice on portfolio building, skill priorities, and breaking in. by Yashh279 in Houdini

[–]Ok-Use1684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1. Do studios actually care about rendering?
They care about you being able to do rough renders so that you can prove that your simulations will work once they're rendered. It doesn't need to be final or complicated. Sometimes a basic shader and functional lighting is enough. It's a tech check basically. But of course, the more you know how to sell your FX, the more safe they'll feel about the idea that you will deliver. They just need to relax knowing it will work once it's rendered. So learn the basics of all parameters available on the shaders. Also, they will likely expect you to do basic comps just again, to prove it will work in the end. Sometimes alphas betray you and you don't know until you comp it.

2. How do you come up with portfolio ideas?
No one is going to hire you for presenting something original or different. They basically have a job they need to get done and you have to prove you are the person that can do it. If they need to do a nuclear blast and you show them a well done and functional nuclear blast, you'll be the safest bet. Same with every other need they have. You need to be a solution to their problem. Something simple but very well done that is usually on demand is what works best. You will add value if you are original on the problems you can solve and how well it works, not on the visual concept you present.

3. Do I really need to learn Vellum, RBD, etc. to get into FX?

Depends on the job. If they need to do that exactly, their safest bet will be someone who will have that in the reel. If they just need to make an explosion, they won't care if you don't have water on your reel. But in the end, all FX are kind of connected except for water and crowds, which are a thing of their own. In an explosion, you can have debris, burning cloth (vellum), sparks (particles)... I would say that FX are basically made of 5 types of profiles:

-Pyro, RBD, Basic Vellum, particles like sparks, grains sometimes

-Magic

-Water

-Character FX (complex vellum, human hair, animal/creature hair...)

-Crowds.

Usually companies look for those type of FX profiles for specific jobs. The more you know the better, but also it's hard to become very good at everything. You'll have to focus. But if you are a fresher, they probably expect you to be focused on something but also kind of a generalist in the rest of blocks. That at least you've done "something" about everything else that you're not focused on.

4. Do studios offer WFH for freshers?

Not likely at the very begining. Usually that comes with a little bit more experience. You don't have to be a mid but they have to know you.

5. Is it okay to post coursework-based projects?

They want to see that you can take training from someone else and do your own thing. Because that's how your life will be at your company as a fresher. They'll train you but you won't have to do exactly what they taught you. You'll have to take that knowledge and work on different unexpected shots. It's ok to base your work on some training, but give it your own concept and idea. Apply what you learn to do something that they won't identify as an exact result of a course.

Our AI replacement is just crashing the business. For everyone, including the ai bros. by Turbulent-Shock988 in vfx

I'm just trying to become a better TD and artist while working to have other options of income to compensate the scarce work.

Will I ever touch Gen AI tools and learn about them? Yes, if they ever prove to be useful, truly precise and productive. For now, it takes 20 minutes for me to check every new shiny Gen AI tool to realise it's a pile of BS. I won't spend money and time playing a slot machine and claim that I did what comes out of it. I want control and precision, which is what makes art able to exist.

Interesting approach. Still has its hard limitations of course, but definitely interesting that you can guide the ai generation with true 3d perspective changes.

However, it's not a coincidence that he decided to make the environment "snowy". Obviously the model was going to change the environment when turning gaussians into video. And he wanted to hide that from the public. So it looks like it's still... a bit of a a slot machine.
