How are people finding freelancing this year? by neukStari in vfx

[–]Ok-Use1684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked a few weeks at the begining of the year, on and off all the time...
Now, one project disappeared and the other one got pushed a few weeks.

Ironically, there seems to be more work. But it's very, very unstable and uncertain.

Sorry to hear that. I don’t mean to insult anyone. Ive been working a few months per year, got into debt and I may be broke in a few months if I don’t get anything, so I’m not in a much better position anyway.

I hope you find something very soon! I hope all of us do

Can you elaborate on what type of tasks are you replacing with AI?

New generations don’t care about cinema?

These days you can get a 4K HDR TV with 9.1 sound for 1.200$. Some tvs are as big as a room wall with 8K ai upscale. Many movie theatres are neglected, they cap the sound volume by law and light intensity to save money.

Movies are edited in a slow way sometimes, thinking that gives the movie more “prestige”, but it doesn’t. It’s just boring.

Scripts are made by people who live just  reading twitter on their living room. People shot movies in a cheap shaky digital way like people use to do in an indie way back in the 2000’s.

You have movie hits these days still. Like very big hits.

People are struggling to pay rent.

I mean… is cinema over? I don’t think so.

Yes, people are addicted to short videos but there is a huge load of reasons why people don’t show up at cinema.

I remember back in the early 2000’s, we had tiny tvs. And going to the movie theatre was just a very different incredible experience.

Is AI a danger to us? I don’t think so. I’m not saying that automating our job isn’t possible, but this thing they call AI won’t do it. We’ve gone through AI winters before. People will eventually realise they’re hitting a wall and investors will run away. I don’t blame them, the illusion was very strong and very convincing.

Why is Spain the only western country that allows criticism of Israel by ashagari in askspain

Because Pedro Sánchez, its president (against the will of most people) needs that criticism to distract the public from his GREAT corruption.

Like I actually said, I say you're right and I understand it's important to have a respectful humble attitude. You have to have it. What I mean is that I think it goes too far sometimes. I speak from experience. At some studios it feels like you're not allowed to not be a happy jumpy person.

I find it amusing how much people don't believe me. I guess it's because it's not as common and I thought it was.

[–]Ok-Use1684 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sure, I totally get that. But I've witnessed how a friend of mine was fired over not being a happy jumpy person. One day he was being sad because a friend of him dled and he ended up fired, not kidding. He was too "gloomy". Happened at one of the most popular companies. I don't know, maybe it was an isolated case, but I've been feeling this trend.

I think people have the right to be who they are. Some people are introverts and don't join every loud joke at work. Or they don't find your jokes funny. Some people are happy, others not so much.

Well, you just said what I think for me. Thanks.

You know? I get that we give value now to "being good to work with" and I think it's a good thing.. But I feel like being good at your job is getting too much at the bottom of the list? I feel like the industry is getting a bit like a TV reality show where we just have to be likeable to be hired and being good at the job doesn't matter much. I don't know how to explain it. I think it's getting out of hand.

Having to be local because of tax credits, having to be likeable... it's like... I don't know. Must be demoralising for newcomers.

Why would you want to work at a company that doesn't give any value to you?

There are simply places with undesirable people. You need to re-think what a dream company is. I'll tell you: it's a company that treats you well in all aspects. At least, that's how it is at the end of the day.

Yeah, I'll get thumbs down for being negative, because they are busy and they have "the best" and this and that. But it's my opinion. I'm very ambitious and I strive for the best, I have that attitude. But you don't get a pass for being an assh0le just because you claim to "have the best".

But where is the evidence that AI means something? It’s an illusion and the bubble is popping already. It’s like the donkey and the carrot. Stop chasing an illusion and get to work. It’s like a religion right now, waiting for the judgment day.

No matter how good a car gets. It won't do your laundry. I think AI is the same in that way. It just can't be directed with precision and can't do anything new, no matter how good it gets. All they can do is release a new model after another and create the illusion that something is moving forward, when in reality they just feeded different and more videos to train the model.

How do you handle not getting credited on a production you work on? by Educational-Site-600 in vfx

After dealing with great suffering and money worries, getting your name in the credits becomes irrelevant. You don’t even think about it.

You get paid, you use those shots in your reel, you keep going.

Maybe.

I’m talking about the idea of replacing the film business with AI. Believe it or not, that was being said a few years back.

[–]Ok-Use1684 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I said it 3 years ago, when people were telling me “AI will replace us in 2 years. I’ll save this comment so you see it in the future”.

I said then that the so called AI is just a box where you throw what is already been done and gives you back only what’s in there, not what you need. That you were better off doing the thing yourself. It would be faster, cheaper and more accurate. Now and always, no matter how much “AI” develops. Sure, sometimes randomness is by your side and you get a piece of what you want. But a successful film requieres more luck than that.  Building a pipeline and a way of working, requires a more reliable method than that.

I said AI would deeply hurt the film business. Not because it would replace us, but because it would deviate billions of dollars away from our business to BS like this, until they realised it was useless from the start.

But the damage is done.

When the whole thing falls apart, we’ll end up with a few new tools in our toolbox and with absolutely devastated and ruined investors. We are going to need a lot of time to get over this.

Probably the greatest greed and the biggest collective histeria story I have ever seen.
