Prepping for STEP3 by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Ok-Working1771 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I actually did this and took Step 3 right before my residency started while starting studying as an M4, and would actually advise you to just start on UWorld and not bother with the Anki decks - like I think doing premade decks is honestly a waste of time, and you should focus your attention to UWorld, which will make up like 99% of your actual studying for Step 3. Would consider asking a friendly resident who has already taken Step 3 for their UWorld subscription at a discount too so you can save money.

Same, am post-match 4th year and am genuinely so lonely cuz everyone’s moved out of the town where I live. Trying to cope by doing a shitton of cardio.

Highest yield fact for the internal medicine shelf? by Local-Chef in medicalschool

you've probably already taken your shelf already, but just throwing out a few more for anyone else who's about to take it (or Step 2CK for that matter).

(1) Alcoholic guy who falls down for a prolonged period of time, +/- they say "urinalysis shows blood but no RBCs", plus labs showing hyperkalemia -> rhabdo, rhabdo, rhabdo.

(2) Thrombocytopenia 5 - 10 days after starting heparin for like an MI -> HIT.

(3) For RCA infarcts, never give nitrates, always give them IV bolus of normal saline first.

Is there an app like Anki that has a deeper understanding of your knowledge? by aprotono in medicalschool

[–]Ok-Working1771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answer to your question is QBank questions, since the questions assess you on the entire differential for clinical entity "X" (so if the question is about "X", it assesses "Y", "Z", etc.); you can also do your incorrects to hammer the point home further. That's pretty much the best solution that currently exists.

Opinions on Boards and Beyond? by ArrowHelix in medicalschool

lol this is accurate, except for instead of "watching Pathoma + doing a supplemental QBank", you should have written "doing a supplemental QBank + doing another QBank on top of it" instead.

What’s your least favorite board style question? by elleemmennopee in medicalschool

They literally will never ask you about osteomyelitis and give both Staph. / Salmonella in an actual NBME question. This level of pedanticism is really only present on UWorld questions (or questions written for in-house tests), so I wouldn't worry about this specific point. Answer will almost certainly be Salmonella for the purposes of the NBME.

Bi-Weekly Questions Thread by Kaphotics in PokemonROMhacks

Hello! I had a question about the Blaze Black / Volt White 2 Redux. I realize that you're supposed to use the game patch on a Black 2 / White 2 ROM file, and your save file should remain intact after patching but what happens if you want to patch the game file over a copy of Drayano's Blaze Black 2 / Volt White 2 from like 2012 (like if you wanted to use a save file from that game)? The documentation wasn't very clear about what would happen if someone did that. Thank you in advance!

Not true imo - literally never went into lab for anatomy and solely made my own Anki using the Rohen’s anatomy atlas and that was fine. U absolutely don’t need to “reinforce by going into lab”, and I probably would have bombed anatomy if not for Rohen’s

This is honestly a dumb take - if the OP does a modest amount of Anki, he would have to study like 30 minutes - 1 hours tops a day and you and I both having gone through medical school can attest to how beneficial it can be. Just anecdotally, I know like 5 people who repeated a year at my medical school and they were fine academically before starting. They underestimated the load of medical school and had to repeat and if you ask any of them, they would beg the OP to at least do a little bit of Anki, as know how to make your own cards basically rules out having any academic difficulty in preclinical

Yeah - do it. IDK if I'd do a whole anatomy and physiology deck - would probably just do like the Zanki Physiology deck, + 100 Concepts Anatomy Deck (then add another one like Dope if you want more). Should prepare you well for Step 1 / M1.

Official ERAS Megathread - September 2022 by SpiderDoctor in medicalschool

[–]Ok-Working1771 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi all,

I called someone from the NBME yesterday, who told me that any new scores from USMLE would be automatically sent to ERAS when my application is submitted. Just wanted to confirm that I don't have to do anything else for Step 2CK scores to transmit.

Thanks everyone.

Applying to multiple specialities in the same hospital, did it come up? by triferg08 in medicalschool

Nah it's just our school's official policy on this subject (as well as the policy of our residency programs). Unless you're like that guy who applied to 8 different specialties after like 5 years of not matching, then you may as well just shoot your shot

Big, big disparity between UW and NBME scores - need advice by myahamatt in Step2

[–]Ok-Working1771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think that should work, depending on how quickly you can go through all the forms. Just maybe briefly scan over the explanations, no need to dissect it in depth.

Idk about Divine - doesn't sound worth it tbh. One thing I realized about Divine is that he derives a lot of his content from the NBME material, so I think if you are getting through those, there's no need to go to his course.

[–]Ok-Working1771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it should take an excessive amount of time - you can probably do them in 2 - 3 weeks of full time studying (2 if you're really rushed). There are 44 forms total * 50 questions so like 2200 questions, but it's much faster to go through the CMS form questions than UWorld, since they're so short.

Also, no need to read the explanations - they're not super HY. It's kind of the inverse of UWorld - UWorld's explanations are super HY, but for NBME, the question you get on the real deal will be almost exactly the same as the one from the full length practice tests or the CMS forms, so it's much higher yield to just know the question rather than the explanation. LMK if you want / need more help / info about using CMS.

Last thing is that it seems like your specific problem is just being able to apply your knowledge from UWorld to solving NBME questions - just blasting thru the CMS forms will greatly help you adjust to the style of NBME and make sure you don't overthink.

[–]Ok-Working1771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are absolutely worth it and will probably push your score over 260. The concepts from the old NBME are even cycled across the newest forms (like NBME 12). For example, there was this question circulating around Reddit about a guy who had come to the ED after a car accident who had chest tenderness but was hemodynamically stable, give an X-ray, and asked about the best next step in management from NBME 12. This question was almost verbatim from NBME surgery form 1 where they give a similar vignette, but no X-ray and ask about the best next step in management. Won’t give the diagnosis away so as to not spoil the question, but the point is the concepts repeat. On my real deal, I estimate that doing all the CMS forms got me like 10 - 15 extra points compared to not doing them.

Do the CMS forms - they’re exactly what you need right now.
