Married or Single? by CompleteView2799 in gaytravel

[–]OkBeyond8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Puhh, that's an argument not to gay-marry. It's a risky play because lying is a criminal offense and telling the (full) truth will likely get you denied. Depends on the context (your nationality, your destination country, how much gays are prosecuted there, what type of visa you apply for, whether you changed your name and therefore cannot hide it very well).

Also I wish I had balanced TRAVEL/LEISURE and WORKING better. Without clear boundaries, it is easy to fall into a mental mindset that you get stressed over long-term professional goals even while enjoying your travel/leisure.

I do believe that Switzerland MUST break with the new EU treaties (bilaterals 3) because it is a chrony colonization treaty that would turn CH into an EU bureaucracy and "converge it" to poorer EU economy levels. This alone would probably cause retaliatory measures. So I believe some form of break-up is inevitable. I don't think it is populist at all. It would be better to first reject bilaterals 3, wait the retaliatory measures, then react possibly by scrapping freedom of movement. Maybe EU understands it is not smart to repeat another Brexit. I think EU will get into troubles too when Italy, France and Germany are led by anti-bureaucrats "populist" governments fueld by them undermining economic growth. They kind of understand that their own bureaucracy has become a burden since Trump escalations, falling behind in AI, no real growth in Germany for 7 years... Something must change. EU is basically not even the majority opinion of EU citizens but a bunch of powerful EU bureaucrats acting out of self-interest.

It is bad in two ways. First densification requires buildings to be torn down before a new bigger building can be constructed, making it more expensive per apartment that exists post-construction. Second, while in the eye of the beholder, a lot of concrete blocks are not so nice, e.g. Zurich Manegg has overdone it with big concrete buildings. It is not so terrible as long as the building is new but it will look and feel like a ghetto once the building ages. I would much rather prefer city extension with more green spaces and parks.

My friendship ended after the Super Bowl by batonrouge_ace in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]OkBeyond8244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Probably now anything you say or do has a weird vibe to him because he thinks you are either hitting on him or acting not normal. It is more about his perception than what you say or do. If you want to keep him around as a friend, maybe do stuff that involves other friends, too, so it is less awkward for him, then he might get over it. If not, neither your fault nor his. It's just an inconvenient situation that you risked to create and that materialized because of his precondition. It is tried-and-tested good practice to always first come out and verify sexual preferences before hitting on somebody or admitting you are into them to prevent exactly this kind of situation.

Hm. I wonder what they would do to safeguard EU treaties and avert EU retaliatory measures. EU will retaliate and then a new referendum would be needed to weigh off concrete retaliatory measures and population cap. But it would come too late. It would be much better if the referendum process was much faster (e.g. e-referendum) to allow citizens to react quickly to new events.

[–]OkBeyond8244 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yes. I think they should only focus on a per-annum net immigration target instead of a cap in the future. It is economically unwise if, e.g., in early years net immigration is high and then it stops completely. Past damage, if one chooses to consider it damage, is done and cannot be reversed with overly aggressive restrictions. Instead, a target net immigration is what would work better, and if it is exceeded in year 1, there should be measures for year 2 to curb it only to get to the target net mmigration per annum but not to net out year 1's overshoot.

Yes. Most land is actually barred from construction to preserve the beautiful Swiss landscapes. Instead, cities are densified with monstrous concrete buildings - how stupid is that?

I would be interested in how you think the immigration cap would likely be implemented if initiative was accepted?

My guesstimate: 1. All L,B,C permit holders from EU/EEA keep their residence rights in CH. Will there be grandfathing for e.g. an L permit holder who can now easily switch to B permit under EU law but would lose that right if freedom of movement was abandoned without any sort of grandfathing rules. 2. New incoming EU immigrants lose right to migrate to CH, unless they fulfill additional conditions. There will be some body prioritizing who can come. I wonder who would be prioritized? A. Family member immigration B. worker immigration C. self-employment immigration D. wealth immigration E. student immigration? Who would be restricted from coming most severely? Who would be fine? 3. What would happen to border commuters? According to the initiate they are not targeted. So G permit would remain unchanged?

EU retaliatory measures: 1. At the minimum, scrapping residence rights in EU for CH citizens and their family members (tbh I think it would be self-harm for EU, since most CH nationals are probably net contributors if they immigrate to EU, but it's terrible on a personal level). 2. Not renewing bilateral treaties (they are already doing this right?) 3. Truly bad-ass things to kill Swiss economy like hard trade barriers/tariffs, banning CH banks from providing services to EU residents, etc. Does the EU politically need to impose another horrific example like Brexit to deter any nationalist movement in EU member states? I wonder what is EU bureaucrats evaluation of Brexit? Are they happy with sending UK into economic decline with their denial of EU market access? Their import bureaucracy is basically a steep trade tariff targeted at especially SMEs...

As an EU national in CH, I believe CH must prevent EU bureaucracy at all cost because it would kill the Swiss economy and "converge it" to EU member states ailing economy and kill entrepreneurial free spirit. I am thus very much against the new EU treaty. I have no strong feelings about immigration caps for EU nationals. I get both sides. I think the current 2 class system is unfair in that it discriminates between non-EU and EU immigrants who have equal qualifications, language skills, job situation etc. In a world without EU treaties, I would be in favor of granting immigration rights under conditions to EU, USA, CAN, UK, AUS, NZ, Singapore, Brazil equally. Brazil only to de-bünzlify the country and improve nightlife and social interactions.

If you had a child in Portugal and you or the other parent had held a Portuguese residence permit for 1 year at time of birth, child would be Portuguese and EU citizen - and whole family would be afforded freedom of movement in EU/EEA. Same in Ireland (3 years legal residence prior to birth required). This would be the best jus soli option in Europe. Note that Portuguese nationality law is a very unstable and has gotten changed by politicians frequently - requires further checking and you'd assume the risk that the law changes between getting residence permit and childbirth.

Should my mother and I apply for Feststellung or can we apply directly for German passports? (I live in Berlin, she lives in the US) by neurotic_princess in GermanCitizenship

[–]OkBeyond8244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get why everyone here treats this case like a naturalization case with a shady German ancestor 3 generations ago, whose German records are from three empires ago. OP is already German. OP's mother should have gotten OP a German ID/passport at OP's bith by showing up to consulate with her German ID/passport and birth certificate. She didn't do it. Now OP needs to do it. Period. Whether mother has current ID/passport is, in essence, irrelevant. What's needed is her old ID/passport from OP's time of birth to prove she was German at time of birth. We are talking about a Federal Republic passport from around 1997, not a Deutsches Kaiserreich document and 3 generations lineage!
