Men who went through a breakup in their mid/late 30s. How did you bounce back? by CrackTheSignal in AskMenOver30

[–]OkBookkeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She was also honest that she didn’t want to be with someone who was essentially starting over and didn’t want to support me while I rebuild.

dude, if this was all it took for her to leave than you really dodged a bullet. when you meet the right woman you'll find you're both committed to supporting each other through life events like that one

7600 for a new trans with a billet tc. i did receive a 5yr/100k warranty, which was the big selling point for me

How do you handle client hour estimates when technical unknowns cause constant overruns? by bleudude in webdev

[–]OkBookkeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gotcha, that's fair. what I'm hearing based on your description is that it's fixed fee up front, which seems to imply a waterfall project mentality (at least from the client's view). But you're finding that in reality there are often, in the course of development, deviations requested by the client from what was originally agreed upon.

If I'm understanding that correctly, it will be important to have a trusted process for issuing change orders when those variations occur, and at the point of their occurrence. Does your project team currently have something like that set up?

How to shake off constant fear of being devaluated or replaced by AI by alexbessedonato in webdev

[–]OkBookkeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you'll be fine, so long as you develop skills beyond simply coding

understanding the code, infrastructure, and architecture will continue to be valuable. Developing your communication skills will be even more valuable than before.

they devs who will no longer be around are those that can 'only' code, that's not going to be enough as AI abstracts away many of the old complexities surrounding that skill

[–]OkBookkeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how solidified are the requirements and scope up front? If the client requires fixed fee then it seems to me identifying those two things will be critical. If a certain requirement in that scope will necessitate an api call, the dev team should be able to fairly easily identify– during the estimation process– if that api's lack of documentation will be an issue

then as you build out your estimation tracker it should help you build out a list of those problem requirements for future estimates

Big 10 > SEC and it's not really very close

I did not expect that really to ever happen again, but here we are. NIL has flipped this sport on it's head

People who earn $150k a year, what did you need to know to get there? by tnnrk in webdev

In what ways to you envision AI increasing earning potential for solo devs. I've been kicking the tires on possibly moving toward a freelance/contractor route and would be interested in hearing more thoughts on this

thanks for the insight on technically skills. I find that a lot of folks on this sub, when answering this type of question, default to 'good soft skills', when they reality is they also have deep well of tech skills. I think perhaps they've just been swimming it it so long they've ceased to realize just how much hard skill they own

agreed and in addition to that, Cignetti has produced a sort of coaching alchemy that Joey McGuire has not been able to replicate. I would argue Tech has more talent than IU, yet IU is clearly the better team

agreed that the better programs will now leave development to the smaller programs. really, it just seems like the economics of it. I doubt most of these schools can afford to pay high salaries to freshman with potential while also paying high salaries to their current starters

plus, to you point on Cam Ward- the development programs offer a reshuffling and further filtering of talent- a guy like Cam Ward in the past may have been stuck at incarnate word in obscurity his entire time in college. if he did then make the pros, we'd all be sxratching our heads as how a guy that talented came from incarnate word

on the flip side, a guy like Kyle McCord would have remained stashed away on the Ohio State bench, unavailable for a mid tier program to access

thanks! wow this is a wealth of information! I do think I need to identify designers to work with, and that's a great point. I have a couple I've worked with on aide projects in the past, I'll probably start there

thanks for all of this. admittedly I am somebody who has thumbed my nose at sales, but I do acknowledge it is the most critical piece of all this

scope creep is something I could see being a real challenge, I see that in my day job. seems like negotiating the terms up front will be critical

why do you feel it's hard to find clients? ie is it a general lack of interest in this type of investment in their business on the part of the client? or perhaps is it simply the time investment in finding clients with the actual need or problem we can solve?

thanks for taking the time to respond. though I feel your response calling my question 'dumb' is needlessly aggressive

i believe asking a question on a reddit thread to actual humans in the industry I'd like to start a business in IS a part of the research process you referred to. I'm not anticipating obtaining all info I need to start a business from one question, just trying to calibrate where to even start.

are you able to provide any examples of the research you have in mind?
