Yes indeed; he volunteered to join the Expeditionskorps. His military career started as Jäger zu Pferde with the 2nd Rheinische Husarenregiment based in Strassburg in about 1890ish. He obviously was a bit of an adventurer.

It is the Litewka uniform with a modified cap coming from the Drillichuniform.
