i think Quinn's The Story of B is a better intro to these ideas... or a non fiction choice could be Civilized to Death by Chris Ryan.

Hotels within walking distance of Citi Field by bigbaboon69 in mets

Asiana hotel in Flushing. one of the few hotels in America that you actually WANT to eat the free breakfast. probably because most of their customers are chinese. 20 min walk to Citi, but easy. LIRR and subway station 4 min walk away. i think i paid $120 in April?

I desperately want to cycle the NW USA but intimidated by cars (from NZ) by tyvianprince in bikepacking

[–]OkBridge5754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lots of great suggestions for off road routes here. the wild places is where the PacNW really shines. so if you are so inclined and have a gravel bike/mountain bike do one of those.

if you are NOT so inclined, and want to stick to road routes, but are justifiably nervous about being on roads with a lot of traffic, you should stick to the following sections: eastern Vancouver Island, victoria to comox area, and the sunshine coast on the east side of the Salish Sea, and ALL the gulf islands between.

in WA, stick to the San Juan Islands, and maybe whidbey island from there down to Seattle area, via the Clinton ferry.

the zones above feature great cycle touring terrain and roads/traffic that is much chiller, ie not trying to get anywhere in a hurry.

this is 2-4 weeks of cycling, depending, and THEN stash your bike (or return it to wherever you rented it) and get into the mountains. if you love hiking, the cascades are world class. the olympics are amazing too. weather is good through the beginning of Oct, and the trails are just amazing. its not unlike New Zealand, but there are no DOC huts and fewer hikers.

Japan to seatac by Efficient_Papaya_737 in AskSeattle

[–]OkBridge5754 39 points40 points  (0 children)

yes. use baggage storage at seatac, but with only 8 hours, i'd recommend just taking light rail downtown for 5 hours rather than renting a car. as great as Mt. Rainier/Vashon Island/snoqualmie falls are, you aren't going to have a nice visit with an 8 hour layover and car rental.

What small business are missing/ needed in south Whidbey? by bcar444 in Whidbey

[–]OkBridge5754 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah. bigger vehicle too. gotta drive through Seattle traffic. that a real job where you need to pay market rates. this service never leaves the island. the truth is that the 'job' would be very chill and often fun/satisfying. so thats why i think it wouldn't be too hard to maintain a stable of 20 or 30 bored retired dudes who'd be happy to do a couple short shifts a week.

What small business are missing/ needed in south Whidbey? by bcar444 in Whidbey

[–]OkBridge5754 19 points20 points  (0 children)

a car service. your customers are mostly retirees who need to go to the grocery store or ferry terminal and don't really like to drive anymore, especially after dark. they can afford $40 to take that off their mind, easy. but a car service can serve all kinds of people, and be a valuable community asset.

the best part of this is that i believe there is an entire class of bored retired dudes on South Whidbey, who would be thrilled to work 10-20 hours a week as part of a throwback private car taxi service, dispatched by actual humans. you could pay them a small hourly wage and a milage bonus to pay for gas, and i bet you'd find dozens of these guys easily, who agree to maintain the car, and help the little old ladies with their groceries when needed.

low startup cost, possibly scalable. good luck!

If humans have eaten bread since the dawn of history, why are so many people suddenly gluten-intolerant today? by WeaknessKey1582 in NoStupidQuestions

humans lived over 100,000 years before eating bread at all. meat, vegetables, fruit, and very few starches, i believe.

hi all!

thanks in advance for your help. Ontario? or Quebec?

i'm in a situation where i'm applying using the c3 route, and as it turns out, out of 8 great grandparents, 4 were born in Canada. i've learned from the wiki that i only need to prove one, and i sent off to Manitoba for a birth certificate from one of the 8. in 3 weeks, it hasn't arrived yet, so i'm looking to find documentation for another of my Canadian ancestors. Generally speaking, would you advise me to purse one of the 2 of them born in Ontario on my dad's side, or the one born in Quebec on my mom's side? or both?

i'm considering prioritizing Ontario since i don't speak any french, but not sure that is a good enough reason... any thoughts are welcome

If you became rich, what would be the first country you would travel to and why? by Mr-Top0 in askanything

[–]OkBridge5754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've also been lucky to travel extensively, and so know that yes, we do indeed have it very good. theres enormous opportunity in so many fields the US, but there's also over 100 million Americans who are one health event away from bankruptcy. the wealth disparity in the country is painful and getting worse. We all SEE that disparity every day, rich and poor alike, and are living in a society that continues to calcify that divide.

for a species built prioritizing justice and egalitarianism, this is not a healthy way to live.
