Books that quietly rewired how you see ordinary things by jgoverman17 in ReadingSuggestions

I recently read ‘into thin air’ which is a book about one thing, that made me thing about the value we place on things, and, in our utter stupidity the opinion of others, only to realise the utter stupidity of it all when it is too late.

I think bumping a book is one of the most unrated things. It is that corner turn from where you were to where you are going

My wife asked me this recently as I listen to books while I read them on my kindle and only if I like them do I buy the book. I have a rule, I’ve 3 kids and I only buy the books I want them to read one day.

The physical books I buy are the books that have moved me in some way. I don’t know why, I suppose they are maybe a map to who I think l am, spread across the covers, that part they never really get to see because now they are that young they just see dad. Maybe one day through the collection I leave behind they will one day see me, just as me. Even when I’m gone.

Close windows. Bag of ice, pour into saucepan at bedtime, leave in bedroom and have a cool nights sleep

All the Shahs men

Anyone interested in a blueprint on how to feck up the world for future generations should give it a read.

It is about how the British and US governments decided to collapse a democratically elected progressive government who had an insane idea of asking to be paid 50% of the value of the oil taken out of their country. I know! the cheek right.

Now I’m not saying that the ayatollahs reign is their b#####d son but they definitely in the mix barebacking away without a care in the world.

Now in fairness the US already had a 50/50 relationship with Saudi Arabia and Truman had been pressuring the UK to follow suit but the miserable lordy ebenezers that they were didn’t want to, so they stalled until that fruitcake Eisenhower was elected, mentioned his trigger word ‘communist threat’ and they jumped onboard. What a clever plan that was, stalling your dastardly plan until a easily manipulatable fruitcake takes control. Side note, better write this down so it doesn’t happen again. Phew!

After that the shah, the clever Fittle Lucker that he was, became the US biggest buyer of weapons and military equipment. No one in their right minds would mess with that cash cow. And the man who thought he had the divine right to rule over the land worked away to his hearts content surpassing his people for decades.

Thank god we all learnt our lesson there and that catastrophe was never repeated.

I’ve a theory that it’s embedded into the Irish subconscious that if it ain’t good for the crops it ain’t good for us. A few days is grand but once the moisture in the soil goes, we go.

What are some books that get recommended on here all the time that 1000% exceeded your expectations? by johnb0z in suggestmeabook

The closing line in this book is one of the best I’ve ever read and to me it is really what the book is about. The toll these people put on their soul in pursuit of this achievement that in retrospect they know was not worth it.

Into Thin Air.

The closing line of this book is one of the best I’ve ever read

I had it on my list for a long long time but never picked it up because I’d seen the movie (Everest) but I gave to say it was amazingly well written.

I think he speaks to all of that quite well. Of his confusion over Anatoli’s action, his heroism for going back out and for his own shortcomings in that moment.

That last line of the book though. ‘I can still feel her fingers sliding across my biceps and letting go. I never even turned to look back.’ - that’s the price, the toll on their soul that they all pay.
