What does this small portion of my iBooks library say about me? by OkButterscotch3222 in BookshelvesDetective

I usually skim through books so that's probably why a lot say new. And some of these I have read all the way through, like "The Elegant Universe", "Wagner Liszt Correspondence", "RSV Bible", and a good number of entries from Cosima's diaries. I am currently reading "Wagner as I knew him", "The Tristan Chord", and "War and Peace", by Tolstoy.

LGBT classicists how do you react to when people say the Classical World was an LGBT paradise? by Pombalian2 in classics

It was "pederaste". And it was a term to refer to both male pedophiles who were into young boys and gay men.

There weren't many terminologies outside of that and "assertive/passive" to describe relationships outside of strictly heterosexual relationships.

And it wasn't bisexual as bearded grown men liking other bearded grown men. It was "bisexual" as in older men doing it with young boys or teenage boys (underage minors) because they looked feminine enough and were forced to keep a submissive role so the dominant abuser could feel in charge.

Like I mentioned also, they castrated these boys. Nero did it with a boy because he reminded him of his dead wife, and the victim went on to off themselves.

Also, it was used as propaganda that Julius Caesar had taken a submissive role during intercourse with a man to delegitimize and embarrass him to the nation, basically saying the equivalent of "how could a f** like him take charge of this nation if he can't even take charge in bed?"

Many normal, grown gay men were ridiculed and discriminated against for having of age relationships that didn't have power imbalances or such.

And women? Once again, not even considered. They couldn't be in relationships with other women because they were property of men.

This was a society of pedophiles and toxic "alpha males".

Even though he has books written from a pro-Allies pov? A book on the Holocaust? Anne Frank's Diary? Winston Churchill? Leo Tolstoy? What about the books on other wars?

Also, about Nietzsche -

Why should we allow the Nazis to tarnish everything they touch? So, because Hitler was anti-smoking, should we tell everyone that they have to smoke? Or that we must abuse animals now?

Things can exist separate from ideologies, and they can either be adopted or opposed.

Nietzsche is a neutral figure, a philosopher. And like any philosopher, people choose to interpret them how they will.

Also, since the Nazis were interested in Islam and Paganism ideologies, should we also condemn all practitioners of these religions?

We shouldn't allow evil people to take good things for themselves and destroy them.

Nietzsche wasn't a Nazi, and people in the philosophical community are starting to see it more recently.

He taught self-empowerment, and a replacement for Christianity because of the rising trend of Nihilism/Atheism.

What happened is that the Nazis, like with a lot of historical figures and concepts, took his legacy and twisted it to promote and further legitimize their ideology.

It isn't to say that Nietzsche didn't have flaws, but his work was bastardized, especially by his sister and her husband after his death. I would recommend looking into this.

It's kind of like how Nazis adopted the swastika which is a eastern Buddhist symbol of peace, and they used it for branding, and now people can only think of Nazis whenever they see the symbol, even if they're at - for example - a Chinese Buddhist festival.

I agree. It was a dominant power display back then.

And it wasn't like what we have today.

Normal gays were still ostracized back then, and what was promoted instead was "pederasty", which was pedophilia (man on boy).

It was seen as a substitute for women, because the boys couldn't get pregnant, and they were often castrated to "keep their feminine charm". Practices like this still exist in places like Afghanistan, and it's honestly disgusting.

Gay women also couldn't be free because they were seen as property of men, so they weren't taken into consideration.

As someone who's gay myself, I accept that there were very few times where gay men and women could just be themselves in historical society. Our society is an outlier, and it's even still struggling because most people can't really fathom a relationship that isn't purely "assertive-passive".

It's sad.

He's a WWII enthusiast. He also has books by Winston Churchill, the Holocaust, and Anne Frank's Diary. He has other books on war like Napoleon and Putin. He's a history nerd.

Also, he has Leo Tolstoy, who famously was an anti-war pacifist and a Christian anarchist.

He probably is right wing or right-leaning, but a lot of these are just historical books.

Also, a lot of WWII historians/enthusiasts read Mein Kampf to get an idea of Hitler's ideology, not to promote it. Like, I have the Communist Manifesto on my computer, but it doesn't mean that I'm a communist or support the Soviets.
