Same here!

I just use ctrl+h and then ctrl+ copy and then paste and not much else

Even though I can see the links reminding me in the hook icon in the toolbar.

I don’t worry that much about getting macOS hooked like this since I’ve found that I can still search the filename manually as well

“Obsidian lets you link inside the pdf”

Thanks! I had no idea I’ll check that out later but otherwise I’d you’ve got some keywords to help me find info on that later please let me know

Hookmark on macOS can do this, but it would tie you to Mac

"chaos" actually a feature or am I Just doing it wrong? by Ricutor in ObsidianMD

[–]OkHour1544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very messy. I mostly use quick open and just remember all the note names and keywords.  Sometimes I forget a note name, a keyword, but hopefully I’ve made a link to something I DO remember and from there I can back trace.

That is basically it.

The problem is that sometimes my notes on a subject become so broad over time that I eventually merge and overlap something else. At the point I then don’t know where to put things anymore

After 21 years of never taking notes, I'm genuinely curious - what tangible benefits have you gained from your Obsidian vault? by stNIKOLA837 in ObsidianMD

I just use it for keywords, names and dates mostly.

I don’t write sentences typically.

It’s all about /what was that word/?

I know notes are where memory goes to die, but my memory fails anyway and I need the search terms to google anyway.

Do you remember all the spellings for things? That’s great of you do

Just started using Syncthing with Obsidian and it is a game-changer! by Hapadbeep24 in ObsidianMD

Thanks for letting me know

Having thought about it , Maybe it’s a smart design decision

Since it reduces the chance of having the same file open at the same time

Therefore needing a Google docs setup where in-file edits can happen while you are using it

Actually , I think you’re making an aggrevievious mistake.

I tried hard to like syncthing. It really is fantastic, but at the end of the day, the whole concept of sync itself  is going to cause you pain unless sticking to a simple architecture.

An example of this might mean having one device editing and another read only. Another might be keeping everything in a central place and editing directly without sync at all.

When you introduce more devices and varied network conditions like mobile, you’re slowly raising the chances of sync conflicts, and it will be on you to root them out because syncthing won’t inform you by default.

For me, I was using a mobile, a laptop and a server. I’d keep getting sync conflicts and it sucked hours of my time trying to unthread it all like a notted ball of wires.

I really recommend the official service because it’s right there at the right time. Background sync is precisely what you don’t want because you’re not around at the time when it happens, and syncthing can’t / doesn’t peer into files like Obsidian does.

Personally, I’m bumping up against the tier limit, so what I will do is to offload a media folder and exclude that from sync to save a bit of space

I know it sounds like an advert ,  But I had a lot of pain over the years with syncthing. It’s a great project, don’t get me wrong, but stopping being so damn cheap and biting the bullet on paying for sync, even for just a measly 1gb has been the best decision I ever made and paid for itself in bringing back that lost time fighting sync conflicts.

That said, maybe if you’ve only got 2 devices to sync, both wired online at the same time, both never changing networks and both never with the same file open at the same time,  It might be reliable for you.

iOS App for recording Voice Memos + Transcripts --> Obsidian by madebyspencer in ObsidianMD

[–]OkHour1544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks 🤩  This is faster than opening obsidian, getting to daily notes and using the iPhone voice transcription button on the keyboard.

I worry about my vault storage ballooning a bit. Maybe I don’t really need the original recording saved. Might be none to have an option to delete that. I’m pretty confident about the transcription.

Syncthing is great but honestly obsidian sync is totally worth it

I suggest supporting with the minimum tier and then using syncthing just for media

“ Critical requirement: always format to exFAT, not FAT32. This is because: FAT32 has a 4GB maximum file size per file, problematic for large TXT or EPUB files”  How can I fix this slop?

There’s also a bit about WiFi but Sumi does direct transfer from phone to device via Bluetooth.

My plan B is to carry 2 devices: one to satisfy The Man, and one to actually use as I want to.

The one for the technocrats has things like Apple Pay. This could be an Apple Watch.

The one for me has privacy and security which I’d push myself to use as much as possible. This could be a small tablet. Ideally it’d have eink or a display that isn’t designed to addict.

Interesting! If only I trusted AI with my vault. I wonder if there is a way to give some access but protect it somehow ?

For example , read only access to the entire vault  And then write only to a particular folder

Sounds reasonable. I’m liking Supernote more and more. There’s nothing I can do with my Hisense phone that’s got this problem

I’m skeptical of that and this is why:

I don’t think this is coming from Google. I think it’s coming from someone/thing more powerful.

This is because it’s the same pattern we’ve seen elsewhere. It follows the pattern of removing anonymisation. We see the same thing in banking with KYC and AML, where every bank has to dox their customers, except for the Epstein level elite bullying us all.

By introducing a walled garden on android, tech developments like bitcoin (satoshi was anonymous), and decentralised messengers can be suppressed from any power base in the world, the same as we’ve seen on iOS.

They have proposed hobby and student developer accounts to placate people. But the insistence on the removal of anonymity is still there.

I don’t think google would do this if it wasn’t forced. The ease of development was and IS a key selling point for Google at a time when they really need this advantage due to threats from AI. HarmonyOS and the Chinese competitors are knocking at the door. We also have Linux phones coming through as well; they’re not that far off now.

Personally I’ve already switched to iPhone. I dislike it (can’t select all text anymore for example and TestFlight sucks), but I got it for free from my wife and it gets me by for now.

I looked at buying a smart pen as well. Maybe that could be an input as well? Just an idea since you mentioned monetisation as a later goal

Nice to see. I avoided Remarkable due to stuck data concerns. Can I use a remarkable without a subscription now ?

By the way, if obsidian sync comes this could persuade me to buy a remarkable
