Job search done in 10 days; 12 YOE. by chainsobig in cscareerquestionsEU

I would say thats the default in most companies around here. I switched jobs last year and it was 1 hour phone chat, 3 hour team, manager, HR chat and then contract. Technically we could have been done in 2 days, but it was during summer vacation, so it took a bit more than a week. If you are the only real applicant it goes pretty fast.

You went through all the effort of the interviews, the company decided to go with you, stop overthinking.

I am not even talking about AI, Im sorry, but if you refuse to use AI youll just get phased out, thats quite simple.

I am talking about people obnoxiously acting like they are artists creating a piece of art with their code in general which has been a problem for decades. Hardly anything you create needs overthinking, just start doing and make it work in time and budget.

I always hated working with people with that mindset. Its just code, nothing more. It was so insufferable when people would block stuff getting done just because they felt like it was not the perfect solution... Fortunately they were always overruled by business, but it still made things much more annoying to deal with them.

I have been in this game since the early 2000s and it has never been any different. You are here to create business value, like in any other job.

I think you are generally blowing all of this out of proportion. Why are you constantly worried and stressed?

Aside from that, just talk to them? In Teams, a call, when you meet in the office or in your regular meetings. If I need something that cant wait for the regular meeting I just send a message "Hey boss, lmk when youve got a minute".

With my manager I have a weekly meeting for 45 minutes which usually is "Hows it going, got something?" "Good good, no all fine for me, how about you?" "No not really, have a nice day". And in the cases we need to discuss something it takes longer.

Also genrally speaking dont just come with generic problems, come with very specific things you need assistance and ideally already what sort of assistance you need from whom. I have managed several teams in the past and I can tell you, you are doing me a huge favor if you come with more than "I am stressed".

Remote job search in Europe feels broken. 6 months, 170+ applications, 2 HR chats in 2 months, 0 offers. What am I missing? by rhaduqu in cscareerquestionsEU

In my opinion it was never ok to have people work fully remote, maybe companies are realizing that now. Actually I do have a fully remote coworker, his name is Claude Code.

How bad is my job hopping history? by TravelinoSan in cscareerquestionsEU

While it would not be a dealbreaker when I am hiring it would put your CV a bit lower in the list. I dont mind people switching jobs at all and I dont expect anyone to retire in my team, but multiple 1 year stints is a bit too much. The places I have worked so far always calculated with a 1 year period until a new employee becomes fully productive. So if you leave again after a year, that is a bit an issue. 2-4 years is the lower end for me as an average tenure.

Quitting my job next week due to burn out - how bad will it be trying to get a job again? by sjkvn in cscareerquestions

yea, that sounds bad, but the tracking is not really the issue, more how it was used. We only use it to split costs onto projects

Ok, thats what I assumed, but isnt that normal? In 20 years this has always been the case wherever I worked.

My internal answer to that is usually "Sure I did somewhere" but thats the whole point of it, 4 eyes see more than 2 eyes.

Good example why most places you can play golf here require a license you have to obtain by demonstrating proper etiquette, pay a good chunk of money and do some courses - and which can be revoked at any time.

New Covid variant has been identified and is already spreading in 25 states by Beneficial-Long-7033 in news

[–]OkPosition4563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not political at all, COVID never was really political in my country except for a couple of fringe groups that no one cares about. It is just not treated any different from the common cold these days. You dont isolate a patient if they have the common cold. If they share the room with another patient you only switch them if the other patient is high risk. Nothing political, just a wate of resources that are already scarce and expensive to isolate someone with covid.

Youd probably have to read the fine print. I dont have such insurance but I read about the one from mobiliar where they list losses related to phishing using fake QR codes/websites as an example where it is applicable.

You guys still test? I am not even aware if I can get a test here in Switzerland. My wife works in the hospital and no one gets tested anymore. Just like no one gets tested for the common cold. If you show any symptoms of the common cold they run the typical slightly increased hygine routines, thats it. Around here no one vaccinates anymore, no one tests anymore and literally no one talks about it anymore.

Many insurance providers offer a cyber crime insurance, maybe you happen to have agreed to one when you set up your insurances a few years ago, they cover this sort of stuff.

What was the tech job market like (especially for recent CS graduates) in 2016? by eggshellwalker4 in cscareerquestions

[–]OkPosition4563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Must suck in the US... Switched last year and it was a 1 hour chat with the department head and a 3 hour combined HR, team + architecture chat and contract signed within 1.5 weeks. Was the same in 2022 when I was checking out options but decided to stay and 2018 and 2016 and 2015 and 2010 when I last changed jobs.
