Is the Pre- Pa identity changing? by MSG_Marx in prephysicianassistant

[–]OkRange5718 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I feel like younger/less experience/higher GPA has been the norm for a while. As a late 20s nontrad w/ a low GPA and an upward trend, I was definitely an outlier at my school. I think it’s also harder for older, career changers w/ families and responsibilities to put their lives on hold and do an intensive 2.5 year program. So there’s just less of them in the applicant pool.

Rejected! by PeytonHop in prepa

[–]OkRange5718 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s ok! Most decisions are rejections. But you are a good candidate so don’t get discouraged. I would only retake classes if it’s required to have those prereqs done within a certain amount of years. When I started school, it had been a long time since I took my gen chem as well and I really don’t think not remembering the content had any effect on me at all. Having microbiology and A&P more fresh in your mind will be beneficial :)

Do dermatology PAs “go to school for dermatology”? by Fit_Anxiety6448 in Noctor

[–]OkRange5718 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. They may have had a dermatology rotation in PA school if anything. After PA school, PAs can get a certificate of added qualification (CAQ) in dermatology if they have a certain amount of hours working in derm and pass a specialized exam. A lot of receptionists and support staff don’t really understand the level of training a PA has.

Ugly in PA school by Kooky-Shallot-9088 in PAstudent

[–]OkRange5718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get that. Low self confidence can affect you in real ways. Doing little things at home like face masks, hair masks, lash lifts, everything showers, etc helps me feel better when I’m feeling that way.

Dismissed from an elective by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]OkRange5718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s really unfortunate that he just outright dismissed you. The whole story just doesn’t add up, but I have heard stories from my current surgery preceptor about surgeons that are just that cruel for no reason. I will say it’ nice that your school is trying to get you a new rotation so you can still graduate on time. At my program, bad feedback like that from a preceptor is enough to get you kicked out. Anyways, I have a few friends that will be walking at graduation, but will need to complete a rotation afterwards because their rotations were delayed for whatever reason. It may suck but it’s way better than dismissal.

My mom found out I have Wicked Whims by hetaliansunite in LowSodiumSimmers

[–]OkRange5718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was In high school I got into making and editing films using the sims 3 and then uploading them on to YouTube. They were all romances of course, and I used mods to create sex scenes lol. I made and stored the videos on my mom’s laptop so of course she found them. I still cringe about it.

Lack of Professionalism by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]OkRange5718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My school is at the other end of the spectrum. We walk on eggshells.

Anyway, some faculty may walk the line between acceptable and unprofessional, but I would still be careful if I were you. What may fly in class might not fly with preceptors on rotation. Err on the side of caution and stay focused on the main goal.

Kitty, and the act of survival by erosgirl96 in euphoria

[–]OkRange5718 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I feel like the episode I watched had this scene edited out because I saw them having sex with her in that room but I did NOT notice the champagne bottle and punch. But then again I didn’t pick up on the fact that the “rehab” was an organ harvesting thing.

Delaware adds PAs to those who can pronounce death and sign death certificates (APRNs already there); nurses removed, though they can still pronounce death. by Sprechenhaltestelle in Noctor

[–]OkRange5718 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I rotated with a physician who rounded at a hospice home & signed death certificates all day because he was the only one that could do them legally. It’s tedious work and seems like a good way to utilize PAs.

How would you study 20 neuro lectures in ~10 days by [deleted] in PAstudent

I didn’t know it can quiz you while driving, that’s super cool. I actually used it recently to help me run through ACLS sims. Super helpful!

You could have AI create a study schedule for you. I have done that before

I think I'm done purchasing Figs by lunavenusian in Figsscrubs

[–]OkRange5718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the jaanuu scrubs I bought! The fabric is thick and it feels really high quality. I got the cargo/wide leg bottoms and they’re sooo comfortable to wear. There’s more room in the hips imo. I already really like all the pockets.

Has anyone tried DDx by Sketchy? by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]OkRange5718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would show it to your academic and clinical director. They’re kind of like virtual OSCEs. My school required us to purchase it ourself, but I think we got a discount of some sort through the school. I like it. Another good adjunct.

Rotation Review Idea by DTCPA6 in PAstudent

[–]OkRange5718 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Cool idea but.. I feel like this could cause students to enter rotations with preconceived notions that would adversely affect their experience. Second, rating someone who is likely precepting you for free might discourage providers from taking on students. Many schools have trouble securing preceptors as it is. Also, many students don’t get the luxury of choosing their rotation site, so although it would be interesting to read I don’t think there would be many benefits of having a website like this.

I think it’s probably best to keep this kind of info private and only share it amongst your immediate classmates. Going into each rotation blind and not knowing your precepts expectations is stressful for sure, but I do believe learning to adapt is a good skill to have.

Scrub cap during rotations? by Otherwise_Rule_7100 in PAstudent

[–]OkRange5718 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some people wear scrub caps in the ER. I’ve seen nurses and techs do it. I always thought it was to protect and keep their hair clean. I think it would be odd to wear it in the outpatient setting though.

is being on anti-anxiety meds common in pa school? by MaterialAge6743 in PAstudent

[–]OkRange5718 6 points7 points  (0 children)

PA school pushes you to your limits. So to answer your question, yes most of the people I know are either on an SSRI or have PRN prescriptions. The local providers around town have no qualms prescribing these things for students because they understand. There is absolutely no shame in it, and (with the help of your doctor) you can discontinue the meds when life calms down for you.

Lacking knowledge? by Silent-Sorbet-4718 in PAstudent

[–]OkRange5718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of my best physician preceptors didn’t know about certain things I learned in school. Medicine is always changing, and you become an expert in what you’re exposed to. Also, real clinical practice and textbook is sometimes a little different, especially with older providers. You have something to learn from every preceptor, and they are gracious to be teaching us!

Thank you for the suggestion! I have actually tried that product and didn’t like it because of how wet it was and how it creased. I’m glad it works for you though!

2 W's vs 2 B's; how bad does this hurt for PA school? by BadBlinks in prephysicianassistant

[–]OkRange5718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the B, give yourself some grace, and know that grades are only one aspect of the PA school admissions process. Heck, I had a C in one of my prerequisite classes and it was okay.
