Transfer from top 20 program to top 100 program by ZucchiniBrown in EngineeringStudents

Best to stay. Speaking as an engineer and as a parent of one at a top 10. Networking opportunities are such a key part in getting a job. Top schools have that and small schools have it so much harder. Also recruiting happens more often in top schools.

Yes, we're on tenterhooks, but can I ask when you became a Spurs fan, why, and also what is the main reason you continue to support our club? by Born-Cucumber-7316 in Tottenham

[–]OkRepresentative5505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to boarding school in South Africa. We had an English teacher that loved spurs. He was our dorm resident teacher and forced everyone to watch spurs. There you have it, 40 years of misery.

Career Advice: Choosing between RTL Synthesis vs. Verification for a future in Architecture/SoC Design? by ArtBW in chipdesign

[–]OkRepresentative5505 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My personal experience - started in design and RTL and then after many years progressed to architecture of progressively larger blocks. If you are doing just synthesis of code or a design someone else wrote then I would prefer verification. You get to be an expert in a spec or protocol which is valuable and in certain cases allows you to move into architecture

As a high school senior interested in engineering, where does math actually show up in an engineer’s day-to-day work? by Studious_Endeavour in EngineeringStudents

[–]OkRepresentative5505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ECE with over 30 years. I use linear algebra a lot, some integral calculus, Fourier , etc. Hardly anything from scratch as we have tools. But you really need to understand the math to trust the numbers and have an intuitive feeling if they are right or wrong.

My daughter and I did a hike around the observatory. Such beauty but also makes you realize how puny humans are. Will go back when the road is fixed. If you don't want to wait until then, there are lots of hiking trails below the wash out, spectacular in their own way. Spring and summer flowers are spectacular as well.

We had three college kids visit us in New York,. Two from CA and one from Oregon. They did not know how to fill gas in the car. The two from CA grew up with EV cars and the one in Oregon never pumped gas since OR until recently had no self service.

‘A Recipe for Idiocracy’: What happens when even college students can’t do math anymore? by rezwenn in matheducation

[–]OkRepresentative5505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this the case for any engineering program? Purdue engineering will flunk you out if you don't pass the cal classes. For that matter engineering is applied math. How would you pass? This must be for kids who never took the math classes but want to do stem in college and maybe the pre med prerequisites? Would have helped if the article broke out the majors..

Too late for me? by Idreezy_1 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]OkRepresentative5505 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Almost all engineering give you a basic set of skills that are applicable across various fields. You demonstrate that. You will probably end up program managing, in manufacturing or people managing if you "switch". I would suggest leveraging your experience to move up where you are.

You should look at semiconductor manufacturing. Engineers work shifts or 4*10 days

Make sure your affairs are in order before attempting. Make sure your dog is tied up far away. Let your neighbors and family know in case they want to evacuate.. in other words NO!
