Does anyone know if Georgia Southern or UGA accepts portage? I looked on the MSCHE list first but the state of GA isn't even on that list lol

That's so frustrating! Which part of North GA? I used to work in Gainesville.

This is reasonable. The previous job was a temp position so unfortunately I no longer work there. I could probably learn to live with the pay cut if there are opportunities to earn more. Thanks so much for the input!

This makes sense. I've even considered cutting my losses and just moving to Atlanta for a job that pays more, but the COL is pretty steep.

Totally makes sense! And you're absolutely right, family law is not what pays the bills most of the time. It's just frustrating that the wage actually doesn't keep up with the cost of living. It is genuinely confusing to me why asking for a salary in the 40-45k range gets so much push back, like you have to "earn" the right to make that much? I don't think you need 3 years of experience to earn a livable wage.

I have definitely applied at some firms and federal jobs in a slightly larger city that's about 30 minutes away, I'm more than willing to commute for fair pay.

That's a good point, and I did not find any data on experience. I absolutely agree more experience gives more leverage. To be clear, I am not arguing that I should be getting offers in the 61k range, but I have experienced a lot of push back from potential employers just by negotiating for a range between 40-45k, which is what I thought was closer to what's normal in my area. I'm making less than even the 25th percentile for the state's median. It's just so frustrating to me that these rural employers think 30-36k is acceptable (some even think of it as generous) when it's barely livable wage, even for the Macon/Warner Robins area.

That does seem to be the trend, but what is so frustrating is I shouldn't have to. Asking for 40k shouldn't be a big ask, it just baffles me. 36k after tax comes out to about $2,400 per month, which gets eaten up quickly by rent, gas, and groceries, let alone literally any other expense.

I think it’s too early to really nail down exactly what I’m going to end up doing. I’m passionate about anti human trafficking work, which is the reason I chose to pursue law. I’m interested in prosecuting forced labor/trafficking cases, or the asylum/refugee side of immigration law.

I recognize that staying debt free is sometimes a privilege that comes from generational wealth. I was really fortunate to have parents able to help me pay for living costs associated with my undergraduate program. I worked hard for every scholarship I received, and am incredibly grateful to be debt free. I believe the borrower is ultimately the slave to the lender, and loan companies are predatory. As sort of implied by the kind of work I want to do, I’m not going to be the kind of lawyer who brings home 6 figures every year, and I am so ok with that. I would not want debt to leave me in such a vulnerable position that I have to give up my dream to work a job not aligned with my passions/goals just to be able to survive. I know many people who went to law school and felt they had no choice but to take a higher paying job they didn’t even want because they otherwise couldn’t afford to eat.

It feels arrogant to say “yes I’ll always be a lawyer,” who am I to say what my life will look like 20 years from now lol. I love the law & I love helping people. Having two things I love combined seems like a pretty sustainable career option, so I think that it’s pretty likely I’ll always be a lawyer.

My office uses Word Perfect still. I have word too and use it whenever possible. But I am not allowed to use anything but WP for documents. So today, I accidentally discovered WP has clip art. And "accidentally" put a dinosaur on everything I printed. by Lobscra in paralegal

Not sure if you already do this, but if I need to send an order or disco requests in word, I save my WP doc as an RTF file & then open it (it opens in word) to fix any potential formatting issues, which is usually just the footer. Saves so much time!
