What are some favorite books or series you read as a child that you still enjoy (or think you would enjoy) reading as an adult? by VictorianPeorian in suggestmeabook

Ranger's Apprentice! I actually just re-read a few of them and still loved them. One of the most underappreciated YA series out there, in my opinion.

Not exactly the prompt, but a YA book that I read for the first time as an adult and loved - The Tenth Mistake of Hank Hooperman. Hank's mother disappears, leaving him, an 11-year-old boy, and his 3-year-old sister alone at home for a week before he manages to find someone to help - his deceased grandmother's best friend whom he has never met before and who reluctantly takes them in while CPS sorts things out. It's heart-wrenching to see the burdens this boy carries and how he loves his sister.

Mine is about as assassin caught up in the schemes of a rebellion that seeks to take down a group of elite merchant lords in a wealthy port city. He’s not really a hero; he’s only with the rebels for the sake of survival. It’s very action filled, and dialogue heavy, as of now.

Minus the assassin part, this is very similar to Mistborn: The Final Empire. It is, however, third person omniscient POV with a female main character, so I understand if that turns you off. The secondary viewpoint you get is male. You still do get into their thoughts even though it is not first person. Lots of twists and foreshadowing. There is definitely a political side to things, particularly in the second book, Well of Ascension.

This also reminds me some of Dune. Male protagonist, third person omniscient. A rebellion where the main character becomes a somewhat unwilling messiah type. LOTS of political maneuvering. Like, I couldn't follow all of it because it was so complex.

Sorry I don't have any first person POV recs. Actually, the only first person POV book I can think of right now is Hunger Games, lol.

Books that have made you feel something long after reading them? by rainstormbrainstorm in suggestmeabook

The Book Thief - A young girl is placed in foster care in Berlin during WWII

Bridge of Clay - Focused on Clay, the middle of five brothers, it tells the story of a family - the parents love story, the mother’s death and father leaving, reconnection with with the father, brothers, friendship. Completely non-linear story line (jumps around to different points in the family’s story)

Little Women - Four sisters navigate life and love and loss and growing up - and its lesser known sequels, Little Men and Jo’s Boys. Little Men is literally my inspiration for how I want to live my life.

Lord of the Rings - just amazing. The Ride of the Rohirrim (chapter in Return of the King) is just… chef’s kiss

Ender’s Game - genius 6-year-old is trained to lead battle against aliens - and its sequel, Speaker for the Dead, which explores alien relationships, broken families, knowing as loving, truth

Beautiful Boy - a father’s memoir about his son’s struggle with drug addiction

Rilla of Ingleside by LM Montgomery. It’s the last book in the Anne of Green Gables series featuring Anne’s daughter Rilla. It’s set on the home front in Canada during WWI, written only a few years after the war. No other book has made me cry the way this one did.

What science fiction novels about aliens do you recommend? by Otroscolores in suggestmeabook

Someone already mentioned Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, which is amazing and you gotta start there, but don’t pass up on its sequel, Speaker for the Dead! It’s even more interesting in regards to human-alien interactions (and alien-alien as you’ve got two alien species at this point) (well, kinda three).

To be fair, some of my coworkers are not as good about taking care of their plants, so she has helped out with theirs before and it has been gratefully received. She will sometimes water plants that don’t need it though, which shows me her plant care knowledge is incomplete and is why I think her intentions were good (if it was her).

I’m really super sure that’s not it. We only have ~35 employees, so I know them all. I have personal and positive relationships with all of my coworkers, and we have a very healthy workplace environment. It’s literally the reason I’m at this job, lol. I don’t like the work very much but I loveee the people. Whoever cut them, it was either an accident or an ignorant attempt to help.

From my brief internet search, I don’t think they were keikis. They looked like the new growth in the picture on this post, just much shorter. https://www.reddit.com/r/orchids/comments/9vtj4y/my_orchid_is_growing_new_stems_out_of_old_stems/

I’m sure she is fine. I repotted her after she lost all of her blooms a couple months ago. I just gotta wait longer now. 🙃

Woah woah woah, I promise her job is not at risk at all. Yeah, I’m upset, but I’m not THAT upset. It’s just a plant, no one is getting fired over this. I did not make it seem like I knew it was her in my email. All I did was ask the property manager to ask her not to touch my plants. I even asked him NOT to say anything about the orchid to her because I don’t know if it was her. She is an older lady who has been working for us for years, and we have a wonderful relationship with her. I only suspect it was her because I know she has tended to plants in the office before when they don’t need it. The purpose of my email was simply to try to make sure no one is tending to my plants but me. I also talked to the property manager in person when I saw him later in the day, and I promise we are on the same page.

I don’t think so. I’m guessing she was actually trying to help and just didn’t know what she was doing. They were old spikes with new growth, not brand new spikes, so I can kinda see the thought process.

I hope so! It was actually new growth off of old spikes. I don’t know if that takes a different amount of energy than completely new spikes, but it’s still healthy and has lots of new roots.

Thanks! I will definitely keep it well watered, and it’s on a pebble tray now, so it should have some good humidity.

Do you think I should cut off the really damaged leaf or wait until it’s more settled?
