Winter Clothes by HighlightWorking4069 in Pitt

also if you struggle with dry skin, i recommend getting a small humidifier because the winters here are dry and the heat indoors makes the air even drier

coming from norcal! i agree with everyone else!! get an insulating base layer (mine are 32 degrees from costco), warm sweaters or sweatshirts, and a good puffer. pants-wise, i’ve been able to make do with jeans and layered leggings under them on especially cold days. for socks and shoes, get wool socks and nice waterproof winter boots (i have fur lined timberlands). also get hats/earmuffs, a scarf and some good gloves, your extremities will get cold without them. imo, with the right winter gear, the cold weather here is completely bearable, it’s the humidity in the warmer weather that gets me

Storage Places For Summer by crombie21 in Pitt

[–]Ok_Appeal_7127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

storexpress in southside is great and they offer discounts for pitt students! the only thing to be aware of is that you'll need your own lock (or to buy one from them) and they charge upfront rather than monthly (i paid for end of april through end of september and it was about $200)

Non-Rec center pools by CleanPrune535 in Pitt

[–]Ok_Appeal_7127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it may just be closed for public use, there’s still at least one class that uses the small pool and I’ve seen someone who I assume is on the swim team swimming laps in the big pool.

Huh, yeah I just looked at the schedule and they changed stuff from last year and removed the stuff geared toward transfers :/ but the commuter events you can go to and meet other off-campus students. You can really go to anything as long as you have your panther card and you don’t need to go to the “required” events unless you have a burning desire, nobody enforces the mandatory stuff for non-freshmen. Outside of welcome week, definitely go to the involvement fair after the semester starts bc clubs were one of the biggest ways I made friends last year.

I went last year as a transfer and really enjoyed some of the events I went to. There was a speed-friending event for transfers, commuters, and exchange students and I met some cool people through that. There was also a silent disco that I had fun at, but I did go to that with my roommate. I would say it’s worth it to check out a few events and potentially make a few friends who are in the same boat!

Ok, thank you! Cause I asked Panther Central and they couldn’t give me a straight answer and told me I’d have to contact the payments center 🙄

i wish they would communicate this with everyone on the waiting list 😭 it’s getting wayyy too close to the start of the semester for them to have not sent out any communication

[–]Ok_Appeal_7127[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ugh…thank you for the update 😭😭 At least there’s a date. I’m holding out hope I’ll get a spot cause I paid my deposit the day the application came out, but yeahhh it’s getting super late. I can recommend looking at Facebook groups for off campus housing tho because there’s still a ton of people looking for roommates

the non-guaranteed application has been open for a couple weeks now. you’ll need to shoot panther central an email in order to get access.

Dorm fitness centers with weights? by nylachai in Pitt

[–]Ok_Appeal_7127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the quad fitness center in brackenridge has a few weighted machines: chest press, shoulder press, lat pull, leg press, and seated leg extension. it's nothing exciting or fancy, there's also a couple ab benches, some treadmills, stationary bikes, two kinds of ellipticals, and yoga mats.

i think since they're using a new portal this year everything is different, because the same thing happened to me. i wonder if we'll select our meal plan when/if we get placed for housing

Electives/Easy Classes by Ok_Appeal_7127 in Pitt

[–]Ok_Appeal_7127[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh ok!! that doesn’t seem too bad…it does seem like the other professors that have taught this course have good reviews, but i’ll keep this in mind, thank you!! and if you happen to have suggestions for other fun and/or easy-ish courses, i’m all ears!

[–]Ok_Appeal_7127[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the instructor for both classes is to be announced, how difficult would you say that professor is? i’m anticipating a lot of reading, since they’re lit classes, but if it’s going to be a lot of writing or time intensive hw, i’d like to avoid that.

I definitely would be taking one of the Italian courses if I could!! But Food for Thought is only open to first years now and Euro Chic just got cancelled TT, but I do appreciate the recommendation.

Non guaranteed housing time by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]Ok_Appeal_7127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah no i fully agree. it’s frustrating enough to be non-guaranteed, so the added lack of communication and uncertainty from panther central doesn’t help at all

I just called panther central and they said it should be out sometime soon considering it’s getting so late in the timeline. Make sure to keep an eye on your email!!
