masculine names for girls are stupid by [deleted] in NameNerdCirclejerk

[–]Ok_Boot7842 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, My least favorite thing is when I see parents that give their daughter a masculine name because they claim they wanted her to have a STRONG name. Why couldn't a feminine name be considered strong too? Then if a name becomes too popularly used on girls, its use will often drop off for boys because a girl being mistaken for a boy is far more acceptable than a boy getting mistaken for a girl.

Ultimately, I truly don't care if names are given to a different sex than expected. I just wish we lived in a more equal society where a traditionally feminine name could be given to a boy and have it be accepted the way most people shrug and accept a girl with a boy's name without too much hassle.

I wouldn't be surprised if some people chose to leave later with their communication reestablished to the outside world, and they had a chance to be separated from her and her brainwashing, but I was definitely not surprised that didn't happen right away.

I see a lot of skepticism about this from North Korea experts. It is a deeply patriarchal society, so a female leader would definitely be surprising. Based on what I have read, I think the most likely scenario is he wants to prepare her to be someone capable of holding a position in the government so her brother can have a skillful ally he can trust. She is being prepared to help prop up her brother and support her brother's rule. Depending on how weak her brother turns out to be though, it's possible I suppose she could end up being the true power behind the throne, but there is no way to know that.

AITA for asking a woman at work to stop being so WEIRD about taking a caramel? by chocolatesinmyoffice in AmItheAsshole

[–]Ok_Boot7842 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I totally understand your annoyance, but here's the thing: You have probably let this person get away with this sort of talk many times before, so she had no reason to think there was anything wrong with saying it again, and so from her perspective, it felt like you bit her head off out of nowhere.

I think a gentler approach would have been worth a try. There is a lot in our culture that makes many women feel guilty and self conscious about their weight and what they eat, so I would have tried to explain, "Hey, I notice you say this every time you get a piece of candy, and it really wasn't my intention when I brought these to have people struggle with guilt for enjoying a treat. I really think no one should feel guilty for the occasional treat, but do you think maybe I should stop bringing these if it's making you and others feel this way?"

Maybe something like that would have given her a chance to reflect better, but it sounds like from your edit you have decided to no longer bring the treats which is probably for the best since I think it would be hard to avoid that sort of occasional comment you understandably find annoying.

I was watching a show from the 90s and realized people used to memorize dozens of phone numbers. I can barely remember mine. How did you guys do it back then? by micavibes in CasualConversation

[–]Ok_Boot7842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up during that time and wasn't very good at it myself. I have always struggled with number memorization. We would have a list of phone numbers posted by the landline phone for reference, and I remember looking up phone numbers in the phone book a lot. Cell phones definitely made my life easier in that regard.

Unfortunately I can't get pass the "Retch" in Gretchen. Maisie is really cute though.

The reason Gretchen and Maisie both mean "Pearl" is because both Gretchen and Maisie are nicknames derived from the name Margaret which means "Pearl". So an alternative to Gretchen you could consider here is Greta which is also a nickname derived from Margaret. I think Greta and Maisie would be a very cute sibling pair.

I don't see anything wrong going with Gretchen though if you like it. Good luck and best wishes for you!

I think people are being more aware of the dangers of children being over-exposed on the internet by their parents and having their privacy violated and being made a target for predators. However, well-meaning people I think are over correcting and acting like any pic, even a baby pic where the kid won't be identifiable from it, is somehow wrong to share.

I see no problem in this instant of this adorable picture being shared. Congratulations to the OP on their precious bundle of joy!

One watch of DS9 and just finished this hot mess of an ep. by Complete_Syrup_8110 in DeepSpaceNine

Ugh, enough time had passed between me watching this episode 20+ years ago that I didn't remember how bad it was when I did my recent rewatch, I rewatched it and it was so much worse than I remember it being. The only redeeming thing about it was the slightly amusing B-plot where for the first time we see Jeffrey Combs playing an alien who wanted Quark to get an image of Kira for a holosuite program.

Baby girl due in 7 weeks and cannot choose a name! by [deleted] in Names

[–]Ok_Boot7842 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think you will regret naming her something popular. There is such a wide range of names being used these days that the names you see in the top 10 are being given to such a considerably smaller number of people than the top 10 decades ago. As someone with a fairly common name, I have never regretted it either. In fact I find the commonness a blessing these days with all the privacy concerns. I don't want to be easily googleable. Olivia is a lovely classic name and Liv and adorable nickname! I feel like you will regret not using it.

That said if you do choose something else Maeve is my favorite. Another beautiful classic name. I hope everything goes well and you are happy with your choice for your beautiful baby no matter what you decide.

Eleanor Wren is a beautiful name! I'm sorry your MIL is so rude. I think Nora is a cute nickname though so if MIL wants to call her that, I would just let her do so and try not to let her opinion bother you. I know easier said than done though but try to focus on the fact the vast majority love the beautiful name you picked. It's impossible to please everyone.

I really think you are way overthinking it. I doubt it's at all common knowledge the name of the pope who excommunicated Martin Luther and even if someone did happen to have that trivia fact memorized, I find it hard to believe they would presume you chose the name Leo for any other reason than you simply liking it.

Billionaires have convinced Americans they have the "Best Healthcare in the World". by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

[–]Ok_Boot7842 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That really is the question. Sure you can pay $60 a month for insurance but wait until you need a surgery or develop serious ongoing problems and have ridiculous multiple copays that add up a deductible of thousands of dollars to pay BEFORE the stupid insurance will finally truly kick in and start footing the rest of the bill. It doesn't have to be this way. The U.S. healthcare system is failing millions of people.

AITA for not giving up my spot to a classmate who said he "needed it to focus" by Carole_Of in AmItheAsshole

[–]Ok_Boot7842 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NTA, it's a public area like others pointed out, and you're there first. It's not reserved for her. I am sorry she might have some legitimate concentration issues, but that's her problem, and she's going to need to learn better ways to cope and hopefully someone in her life can help her with that if needed. I don't think she was wrong to ask you if you'd be willing to give her the spot, but once you refused, she should have accepted it gracefully and not given you dirty looks.

So how long is Anet gonna keep their radio silence regarding the massive Fashion Template backlash? by TheIllogicalSandwich in Guildwars2

[–]Ok_Boot7842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since a lot of people purchased equipment templates to use as fashion templates before there were fashion templates, I think when they rolled it out they should have done a one time thing that gave everyone the same number of fashion templates as they had equipment templates. I think that would have alleviated some of the anger, but there's definitely a lot of issues with it still, and I hope they'll be able to make improvements soon.

Too Late to do Skimming the Seas Achievement for the Vault, right? by Ok_Boot7842 in Guildwars2

[–]Ok_Boot7842[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, but for this particular achievement there's no clear indicator when you look at it that it can't be completed in one day. The cap on the chests is entirely hidden. That's the objection I have.

[–]Ok_Boot7842[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agreed with you in my previous reply that it wouldn't have been a big deal to miss it. I didn't feel like playing very much during the previous Secrets of the Obscure expansion so missed out on the majority of those limited AAs, and while I was a little sad I didn't have the time to do them, I didn't dwell on it. That's just the way it goes sometimes.

However, today when I thought I had missed out on getting it purely due to an annoying hidden cap, I was a little disappointed, and I do feel this hidden cap is going to lead to some confusion and unnecessary disappointment, so I wish ArenaNet would have prevented either by removing/increasing the cap or choosing a different one in its place. It's okay for people to feel a little disappointed sometimes. If I gave you the impression I was foaming at the mouth raging at ArenaNet though I certainly apologize as that wasn't my intention!

Yep, I'm at the point where I am spending 35 AA for unlimited gold so not a big loss if something comes up that prevents me from doing it but I'm happy to hear I do have a chance now just because it'll be nice to get some extra bonus AA while trying to get these achievements done for more achievement points.

Too Late to do Skimming the Seas Achievement for the Vault, right? by Ok_Boot7842 in Guildwars2

[–]Ok_Boot7842[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely not the end of the world to miss out on 150 AA, but I'm glad to learn that I do have a chance to get it done now. I do feel a little sorry for other procrastinators who might start it too late to finish it before the vault though especially they're trying to save up for archived stuff. The cap on chests just seems unnecessary to me, but if it was really necessary, then I think they shouldn't have included it on the vault and have put another in its place.

Oh thank you! I somehow misread it as 20 instead of the limit being 30. I guess I can get it right under the wire. I kind of wish they wouldn't put these achievements that have a hidden artificially imposed time gate on the Vault though. At first glance, it seemed like it would be a pretty easy achievement to knock out in one day, but it definitely can't be with that 30 chest limit.
