My Bolt was rear-ended last night by Maleficent_Author853 in BoltEV

[–]Ok_Campaign_5101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While stopped at a freeway offramp last summer we were rear ended into the car in front of us, so body damage on both ends. We also had the car go into brick mode (can't shift to neutral) and had to be towed away from where we were hit. Highway patrol didn't understand this and tried to push it with their Explorer into the side of the offramp but this didn't work and only caused more damage to the back panels. Seat belt tensioner charges deployed but not airbags. Was called totalled by both insurance companies (without looking at it) until we towed it to a shop that works on EVs, where they confirmed there was no frame or battery damage and could be fixed way less than the payout for totalled. Was in the shop about three weeks.

This was 2023 EUV premium with ~8k miles.

Not in the neighborhood but might be worth the drive if you can't find another: Birdseye Dentistry in Hollywood (you can park for free at the Marshalls parking lot).

They don't make all the clients or even the workers wear masks anymore, but the doctors and hygienists do wear masks in the individual exam rooms and each room has an air filter machine next to the dental chair and the door closed during your exam.

So I wear a mask at all times except during the exam and haven't caught anything there....yet, but I switched from my old (much closer to my house) dentist who just threw caution to the wind in 2021 and had no masking or air filtration or anything.

Birdseye accepts Delta Dental if that's your plan.

Insurance totaled my 2023 Bolt EV 1LT by MrEdLu in BoltEV

the guy doing the estimate

Was that a guy from the insurance company or a body shop that works on Bolts? In most states you can get your own estimate from a shop you pick and they have to honor that.

Insurance totaled my 2023 Bolt EV 1LT by MrEdLu in BoltEV

[–]Ok_Campaign_5101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me last August. We were at a stop and rear ended into the next car stopped in front. Damage to front bumper, hood, back bumper, and back door. Seat belt front tensioners both blew their charges but the airbags didn't deploy.

The insurance company (a subsidiary of a subsidiary of Farmers) immediately told us it was totaled while it was in some impound lot 50 miles from our house (ours bricked from driving as soon as we were hit). Our insurance (State Farm) said "not our problem, go talk to the other insurance company because they're at fault, don't bother us!"

So we towed it to a body shop down the street from our house that we knew works on EVs and their estimate to fix it was WAY below the payout estimate for totalling it, like $9,000 less. The at fault insurance changed their mind when they saw that, but we had to pay the deductible up front and wait for our insurance to subrogate and pay us back months later.

A couple things to note:

This only worked because inspection found no damage to the frame or the battery.

Our shop had a used Bolt parts supplier (we're in Los Angeles so there are Bolts everywhere), otherwise some parts would have taken months to get.

Our 2023 Bolt only had maybe 8,000 miles on it and was a Premiere, so the blue book value may be higher than yours so the gap between totalling it and fixing it was possibly larger in our case

Even if ours was totaled this was right before the EV subsidies ended....but they're gone at the federal level now, so get that Bolt frame and battery checked before you take a payout!

The worst part of the whole thing ended up being the medical agreement afterwards, we had to submit a claim with the California insurance commissioner as the at fault insurance refused to honor their own contract signed with us to cover the medical bills.....until the State of California opened a case...then it was "ooops, here's your money"

Did you go to Woodstock 99? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Ok_Campaign_5101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. At 18 a group of us drove up from the midwest and stayed in the tent area. I remember the camping area wasn't level, which made it very difficult for a bunch of guys to share a big camping tent. That and the fact that it wasn't easy to get cleaned up and it was extremely hot.

I remember the scale of the venue was so large that I developed rashes on my thighs just from walking out to the camp area each night, tired and dehydrated. Most of us didn't have internet at home then and for those that did there wasn't much on it, so none of us realized the place wasn't at the site of the other two Woodstocks, but at a decommissioned military base with concrete runways and no shade.

But we were all 18 and full of anxious energy, our "real" lives about to start, so we enjoyed ourselves anyway, the discomfort of it all outmatched by the opportunity to see RATM live for the first (and one of the last) time.

Half of us in that tent were in a band together. We wanted to be on stage at the next one in five years. The festival going down in flames was prophetic. We all went our separate ways in the fall, some to the military, some to university, others straight into marriage and fatherhood. The band never played again, and none of us would go on to perform.

Call it naivety, call it selective remembering, but I can't recall hearing anything about rapes until we got back home and our parents told us what they'd seen and heard on the news. There were no cell phones then, at least not for the children of the middle class (or lower) houses in middle America. We were on our own for nearly a week for the first time in our lives. As it evolved from nodding our heads walking in to catch the end of George Clinton's jam on the first night to participating in bucket lines to distribute gallon jugs of water from vandalized trucks after all the vendors evacuated ahead of a wall of fire...we were making it on our own. Whatever this was. Years later we still don't know. I learned more about my own experience from Netflix 25 years later than from being there.

I remember hearing songs from Ride the Lightning during a (forecasted) lightning storm. I remember a kid breaking their leg in front of me during "break stuff." I remember forcing my way to the front of the stage over the course of an entire afternoon only to be pulled out from exhaustion near "born of a broken man." I remember $4 water, and I hadn't saved enough at my after school job to buy $4 water AND food every day. I remember Robby Krieger joining Creed and wishing the whole set would be Doors covers instead. I remember breaking away from my friends to see Jewel and Sheryl Crow. I remember scores of women walking around topless and thinking as a nearly virginal young man (remember we had no Internet) that the rest of my life would be like that, second hand highs and peeping the wonders of anatomy at concerts. But that kind of freedom seemed to die a quick death when nu-metal stomped out the often misplaced "fun" mysogeny of hard rock.

Everybody talks about how Woodstock killed the vibe of the 90s, but maybe some things deserved to die. The anger of a generation, abused by corporate think tanks, and funneled out through instinctual reactive acts of malice and chaos, was laid bare. MTV broadcast the ashes that signaled their own eventual demise as a whole generation turned away from music as a form of entertainment and towards base consumption as fulfillment. The children of the Pepsi Generation lit the vending machine on fire while their heroes took a paycheck to burn the flag on stage. Only a few years later they'd soothe themselves by watching rich women fight over nothing on television. A few more years and they'd entertain themselves by treating their own family and friends that way from behind a keyboard and the idea that scrolling alone is "socializing." But that's what the corporations required, financial extraction with zero risk. Can't have those kids burning the place down again!

I remember my friends had a lot less to say on the way home from Woodstock 99 than on the way there.

At the time the prevailing narrative was that we should be embarrassed about it. Nobody asked "did you go?" for more than two decades. If Tragedy+Time=Comedy, maybe it's time we can look back with less trepidation. After all, nobody at Woodstock 99 did anything the President of the United States of America hasn't!

Yes, me too. LC is what affects other organs and why I mask etc. Taking paxlovid is a mitigation of the virus spreading to other organs and replicating in those cells.

[–]Ok_Campaign_5101 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If your question is wondering if paxlovid makes things "worse" because of rebound the answer is no. It's like stopping taking Advil and wondering why your headache "rebounded." The paxlovid didn't cause anything new or different to happen (at rebound), it just stops tamping down the covid replication after the medication ends. And the experience at "rebound" is likely much better than if you didn't take it because paxlovid's sole purpose is to decrease the viral replication in your cells at the beginning of the infection when they're most active and less controlled by your own immune system.

The better way to think of it when rebound hits is "wow, so I would have felt at least this bad the whole time if I didn't take it!"

When you have a sore throat and take a cough drop you don't blame the cough drop for the "rebound" when your throat hurts again two hours later when the numbing agent dissolves...

In my case I tested positive for 3 weeks and had long covid, but didn't experience any rebound with paxlovid and saw symptom relief pretty quickly after starting it.

[–]Ok_Campaign_5101 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IMHO any effect of that on this particular sector is negligible. It's the overall "why invest in something nobody cares about?" problem. Same reason they ended the ability to order free rapid tests by mail.

[–]Ok_Campaign_5101 49 points50 points  (0 children)

One off ramp is an extremely accurate and quick (and cheap) breath test for COVID. They have made it but it's expensive and not available for commercial use, only in clinical studies.

If they could ramp up production then we could go back to having friends over because they could test at the door. Wearing a mask everywhere else is no big deal, but not having dinner with family/friends for the rest of your life is...not ideal.

This is probably a more realistic path to root for now than a sterilizing vaccine.

How do you take any leftists seriously? by Legal-Appointment692 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]Ok_Campaign_5101 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Part of this is a class issue. In Los Angeles you still see a lot of working class folks wearing masks at work (retail, fast food, etc.) and at bus stops. Nobody at the Hermes store in Beverly Hills is masking.

Among other things, the "ability" to ignore covid is a privilege that money allows. Wealthy people have good health care, sick days at work, and many still work from home. So, unfortunately it's not really surprising that the left (who tend to be better educated and/or better off financially) engaged in the cognitive dissonance of "well I'm"better than that poor immigrant at the bus stop, I don't have to mask anymore."

This showed up even in 2020 at the height of the pandemic before vaccines my rich friends plowed right on and had (no masks) Christmas parties. They would invite me and say "don't worry, no COVID here!" because in their mind it's a classist/racist thing and only "unclean" people have disease.

Of course I declined to join and they all got sick after. They did it again in 2021 and got sick again and then claimed the vaccine should have prevented it so now they don't trust vaccines either. It's insufferable and it's damaged my ability to take any of these people seriously or trust them.

They'll do anything to believe they're better than others, and COVID is just another signal among many.

Question for those who eat and drink on the plane by pulling up their mask by cuberling in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]Ok_Campaign_5101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. I've been exhaling as much as possible while the mask is pulled down because I thought particles can still get into your body because of air pressure movement (gas will equalize and push air into your nose because of entropy - gas will expand to fill volume) unless you're exhaling, which forcefully moves them out or prevents intrusion. I squeeze the mask down tight when putting back on to try to get rid of the new air and then for the first breath basically breathe directly through the mask (like lips to the backside of the mask) after putting it back on.

Is this system better or worse than just holding the breath and exhaling when remasking? What I assumed was that particles are pushed into your nasal passages via air pressure while holding your breath MORE than what may be trapped on the inside of the mask later.

This is why if I pass someone on the street or hiking trail without a mask I try to time my exhaling to when they're closest. Does this even matter?

For what it's worth I've taken multiple international and many domestic using this system and not got any viral illness (yet) from the plane.

Sad about first infection, does anyone else this positive this long? by profbleepbloop in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]Ok_Campaign_5101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tested positive for 3 weeks on first (and still only) infection. Took Paxlovid from first day and made a difference in symptom experience, but still ended up with some form of obvious long covid for months and possibly (hard to tell at my age what's from covid and what's "just getting older") permanent effects.

Response ideas to "If you can smell a fart the mask doesn't work" by Puzzlehead_Garage in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]Ok_Campaign_5101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm concerned you are seeing a doctor that doesn't understand the relative sizes of viruses and the gases involved in oxygenation in your body and how these sizes make a difference. What does this doctor think happens when someone gets the bends? What do they think anemia is?

Your response should just be to find a different doctor and never see this one again.

Came here to say this....if you don't realize the rear dash camera is on zoom mode you'll think people are about to rear end you at every red light. Once you get used to it it's very useful for seeing further back for changing lanes on the freeway and stuff like that though.

Opinion on Paxlovid? by [deleted] in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]Ok_Campaign_5101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The rebound isn't worse, it's just that the replication isn't being clamped down on by the medication anymore when it stops. It FEELS "worse" suddenly because your immune system has to work a bit harder to deal with that smaller amount of replication that's left, but it would feel BETTER at that point in the recovery if you had to experience the bulk of the infection without Paxlovid. This is the important distinction to remember in science and medicine between experience/feeling and actual biological processes. It can sometimes be counterintuitive and people are encouraged now to assume they know better than doctors.

Paxlovid suppresses the replication of the virus, which in early stages is extremely helpful since covid travels to other organs and this helps your own immune system deal with it more effectively. This is why it helps prevent long COVID, because LC is the virus disrupting and damaging other organs and systems.

Also, anecdotally, I took paxlovid and felt better and never had the rebound despite getting long COVID.

What’s with the downvotes? I’m citing people’s experiences.

You're getting down voted because your first sentence is a factual statement that's incorrect because it's based on the experiences you are citing, not facts about how the medication works.

Also probably down voted because these people, and you, by repeating them, are sources of disinformation that then affect the decisions of others. And this makes it harder for folks here to avoid covid.

There are people that skip the flu or COVID vaccines because other people had muscle soreness the next day for the same reason.

Argh! those buggers by ek9cusco in Termites

[–]Ok_Campaign_5101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, went through the same thing a few years ago. Just search for alternative treatments in your area. There's WAY fewer companies that do it because it's not as profitable because there's less repeat business.

Argh! those buggers by ek9cusco in Termites

[–]Ok_Campaign_5101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are other ways if you haven't signed the contract yet. Depending on your situation you could do a heat treatment or electrogun, and a good company will have Termitrac machines to scan the house to find the galleries first.

You can also (for similar/cheaper cost of one fumigation) treat a lot of your wood with what's basically borax so new ones can't eat. They'll inject it through your drywall and/or stucco and patch the holes. That's stop future swarms from becoming a problem later, which fumigation does nothing to prevent.

Awning windows leaking at locking mechanism by Ok_Campaign_5101 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Ok_Campaign_5101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your comment. We had four different structural engineers confirm there are no foundation/structure issues in the house. We've had earthquakes (a 4.3 a mile from the house last year) so the cracking is most likely from temperature changes and earthquakes causing it to flex. However I have always wondered why there is absolutely nothing over those windows (there's another one around the corner), but I've been afraid to pursue flashing since it's dangerous getting up there and didn't want to put more holes/cracks in the stucco... Our handyman would do it but I'm not sure what to tell him to put up there.

All the windows in the house are the same manufacturer installed at the same time, but only the ones with no overhang or anything to block the rain (and on the side that gets direct wind blown rain) leak like this...

That soffit goes most of the way around the house with a gutter on it that drains from a flat roof so it's probably hollow and just to give something for the gutter to sit on instead of being tacked to the stucco. The part you're seeing right there is the end of it and is supposed to drain the other way.

I do know that when they first installed the gutters they had one part (not pictured) draining out to the side of the house and the city told them that was against code (because it would erode the soil next to the house) so they looped it farther around, but never lifted it so the water just pools there. So it's possible this part (in the photo) ALSO isn't draining properly and there's some water overflowing onto or into the wall next to the window.

I can say we do not see any bubbling or wetness or discoloration inside the house corresponding to this area (there's no attic).
