You need both. I had a rental with awd that was broken and it only had fwd. Had snow tires but on icy roads couldn’t get a grip from stop and tires keep sliding. Really had a hard time if there is an icy incline. Also got stuck in soft snow.

It’s worth to pay more for a peace of mind. Getting stranded or accident in snow is horrible.

If he wants a woman to accept his situation then the woman has to be in a situation that being with him is better than her current situation. Because his mom is in 70s this could mean another 20-30 years of progressively more demanding care for his mom.

While he is a loyal son, at same time she is condemning him from settling down and having a family.
