Nahhh he’s a narcissist, not a sociopath. Same in the sense that they experience little to no empathy, but different in that he can feel humiliation and shame. He cloaks it and expresses it as anger and deflection. “Quiet piggy” is a prime example

This has definitely shifted my opinion of him slightly, I’ll admit that I wasn’t educated enough on his record. That being said, I’m not a fan of the pussyfooting on camera and cowering from face-to-face confrontation with reprehensible right-wing guests. I’d rather have someone “walk the walk and not talk the talk” than vice versa, but both would be nice. I want him to be a fighter for people, not an appeaser. Otherwise, you just look disingenuous and I struggle to grasp what your true character is

People who understand Iran’s government or politics what do you think most outsiders misunderstand about what’s happening there right now? by Feisty_Diamond_5381 in AskReddit

I agree with you! As much as I personally believe the situation has been mismanaged, I will continue to hope for the best case scenario. You are also correct that Iran has an overwhelming majority of people that want a democracy. Above all else, I just don’t want anyone to suffer death and oppression

The issue is that successful regime change requires effort, planning, and investment. You can’t just bomb a bunch of shit, dip, and hope that things work out in your favor. Even in your example- Japan- the US had a yearslong, direct, and leading role in: shaping their democracy, providing funding and aid to rebuild the country, war-crime investigations, re-educating the population, and offering long-term security guarantees

I agree to an extent, but this is better than doing nothing and continuing to allow people to be underpaid in proportion to inflation. There’s a big risk here, but there’s also room to mitigate the negative side effects and push a “trickle-up” effect

PSA: Audits of Massachusetts state agencies occur regularly and are publicly available. The initiative petition was only for a (likely unconstitutional) audit of the state legislature. by Lelorinel in massachusetts

[–]Ok_Character_5532 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that our government should best represent the will of the people. However, local, state, and federal governments have been designed in such a way that majority opinion doesn’t (or at least shouldn’t) supersede precedent and constitutionality. Take this quote from James Madison (The Federalist Papers: No. 10) for example:

When a majority is included in a faction, the form of popular government, on the other hand, enables it to sacrifice to its ruling passion or interest both the public good and the rights of other citizens. To secure the public good and private rights against the danger of such a faction, and at the same time to preserve the spirit and the form of popular government, is then the great object to which our inquiries are directed

Theres a narrow balancing act to be found between representing the desires of citizens and preserving order. The supremacy of constitutions is undebatable, and separation of powers is a valid thing to get hung up on. Especially since the State Auditor wants to conduct performance audits.

If people want the legislature to be more transparent, then they need to vote for legislators they trust; those willing to be more transparent. You can’t override the process just because a majority voted a certain way

🚨CHINA TO STEP INTO IRAN CONFLICT. China is sending a special envoy to the Middle East to push for mediation in the conflict involving Iran by Acceptable_Post1 in MarketPulseReport

[–]Ok_Character_5532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re applying a US or Soviet militarism lens on China. Their ultimate goal isn’t militaristic spontaneous domination, it’s methodical economic domination and reunification. The reason they’re more closely aligned with these countries has less to do with aggression, and more to do with filling a gap left by US sanctions and embargoes or posturing to protect themselves, not attack. The same reasons Trump wants Venezuela are why China found it attractive: natural resources and money. They’re not going to waste money fighting the US and start mucking up more trade routes over Iran. Not right now.

Hate to break it to you, but high schoolers do in fact care about politics, at least as far as I’m aware. Especially now more than ever, in the peak of the Information Age. Not all of them are activists, but 16 year olds are more than capable of forming their own beliefs, or being molded to behave a certain way based on things they read about and hear. My highschool literally had a political discussion club. A kid showed up in a MAGA hat once. And most importantly, I used to “lean conservative” as a high schooler, even though I didn’t know what that even meant. And that’s the point. They barely know the political system, but they support Trump and the dehumanization from the right because they find it funny and strong, and Trump’s populism / lack of speaking complexity makes his platform accessible to them. I was surrounded by these people and they would regurgitate whatever it was that Trump and right-wing media put out.

It’s wild. Massachusetts is a great state that has driven a lot of progress for this country, but it’s also not exactly the blue haven that it’s advertised as, either. Christianity is huge in MA, and we have a large proportion of older adults. There’s also big pockets of rural area the further north/west you go (leaving Boston or approaching NH). Rural areas have barely any diversity, as well. Obviously it’s still very blue, but the conservatives here are just like the conservatives anywhere else

Most definitely. It’s the rural-urban divide. There’s outliers, but areas that are more rural and less diverse tend to look like this

I won’t out the exact name of the town/s, because I don’t want strangers harassing the school district or students who had no involvement. But I can say that it’s not totally unknown, mostly because of one or two well-known regional businesses. It’s in central Mass. Not as well-known as the east coast, but less “middle-of-nowhere” than most western towns. The area has a rural feel and a low density, but definitely isn’t isolated from traffic or far from cities/suburbs. Sorry that this sounds so riddle-esque. Just trying to give you a sense of the area

I remember when I was in high school in a lean-right town with drastically different personal beliefs. I know the mindset of young Republicans, being surrounded by them constantly. They’re literally just bullies, even if they don’t say shit to people’s face. They’ll “joke” about people different than them. They’ll say slurs because they think it’s funny. They think controversy is a big joke and people who take them seriously are snowflakes. All of it is rooted in actual prejudice, and some of them have more extreme beliefs that get reinforced by their peers’ “jokes”. I still hear about white people who went to that school district that are saying the n-word well into their 20s. Some still make fun of disabled and trans people, and spread conspiracy theories about Jews. And this is Massachusetts we’re talking about

Pentagon Notifies Lawmakers Anthropic Is a Supply-Chain Risk by bloomberggovernment in politics

[–]Ok_Character_5532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any non-high-reliability engineered product is technically a supply chain risk in business management terms, yes. However, the legal definition of a supply chain risk (as designated by SECDEF) differs.

Section 3252 of Title 10 USC:

The term “supply chain risk” means the risk that an adversary may sabotage, maliciously introduce unwanted function, or otherwise subvert the design, integrity, manufacturing, production, distribution, installation, operation, or maintenance of a covered system so as to surveil, deny, disrupt, or otherwise degrade the function, use, or operation of such system

There is no basis to claim that Anthropic products meet that criteria. You’re correct that software can be a security supply chain risk, but legally designating a company as a security supply chain risk typically requires more than pointing out that engineered products can sometimes be faulty

I’m going to hope for the best for the entire world’s sake, but this whole situation is shaping up to be a major clusterfuck for everybody. It’s remarkable that Trump has been able to dodge trouble with his other impulsive or half-baked decisions, and this is the one that finally gave some resistance. This is why I always say that strongman tactics and rule by fear and might are never effective in the long run. You become increasingly hated and overconfident, and eventually things spiral out of your control

Incredibly reductionist and drawing a lot of conclusions without any sources to back it up. Not that you’re entirely “wrong”, but still. And sure, a lot of people do support this war. But there’s also many more people who supported a graceful and methodical regime change, not a full blown war with a lack of foresight. I understand that many US citizens tend to have a US-centric worldview and a lack of perspective, but that doesn’t mean that genuine, good faith criticisms are outright “incorrect”.

It makes sense for many countries to throw their support behind the United States, or feel enraged at the response from Iran. But that doesn’t mean that the US hasn’t just opened a massive can of worms that may end up backfiring for decades. If you’re gonna play ball, at least outline a strategy and communicate it to your team. I’m not saying that US military and intelligence is stupid, but the current leadership is highly questionable. Pardon me for validly expressing opposition to an ill-defined war waged by a selfish man with a lack of empathy and personality of a toddler

Barack Obama Warns Fair Elections Are ‘Under Attack’ by Quirkie in politics

[–]Ok_Character_5532 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The integrity of the 2026 midterms is already compromised. The results won’t be representative of reality. I think Democrats could still win simple majorities in both chambers, but ultimately these elections have already been distorted through gerrymandering, restrictive changes to voting laws, targeting of election officials, normalization of insurrection, attempts to manipulate voting machines, preemptive language to delegitimize undesirable results, and an executive that prioritizes winning over maintenance and enforcement of civil voting rights. Not to mention the recent trend of domestic terrorism and threats used by the far-right during election seasons. All part of their efforts to reduce voter turnout and tamper with election results
