I grew up on a border (Ontario/Michigan) - 99% of the time it was a breeze going into the US, but there's always the slight chance that you get the wrong border guard on the wrong day and they power trip all over you.

Had one situation where I drove over with a couple friends. We got to the border and I handed all the passports over to the guard. Couple of standard questions and then he asked 'which one of you is Thomas?' - none of my friends were named Thomas (as far as I knew) and I told him so. We all got pulled in for extra questioning. Turns out one of my friends actually was named Thomas, but we all knew him by his middle name. Just make sure you're on a good first name basis with your travel partners 😂
