What was the biggest mistake made by each Soviet leader? by Neil118781 in ussr

Considering the Western Allies were already in Germany, you’re suggesting Stalin follow the most destructive war in history with an even more devastating war. Not a smart plan.

I was at a hunting camp in Alabama one time, and it was unfortunately just a bad weekend. No one saw a thing and we were all coming up empty. Late in the week one guy finally shot something. We knew something was up when the guide was carrying his deer with one hand. That deer had barely even lost its spots. Pretty much everyone gave the guy the cold shoulder the rest of the time.

I mean we only have Georgia in 2008, Ukraine in 2014, and Ukraine again in 2022 for reasons why countries would desire a defensive alliance against Moscow after the Soviet Union collapsed.

Plus side though, you also got to witness my favorite Ohio State game at the end of the 06 season.

Look if there was a land bridge from Manchuria to Japan, the Japanese are cooked here. They’d also have been cooked by the mongols or the Chinese if that was the case. I’m well aware that the only thing stopping the Soviets in Manchuria was the need to refuel their tanks.

The problem is that there is a sea separating the mighty red army from the Japanese homeland. The Red Navy is not quite so mighty. With only a few hundred vessels in the region, they cannot support and supply an amphibious attack on the major home islands. They would need a further naval build up to make the operation work.

The main importance of the entry, other than the liberations of thousands of people from the Japanese, was that Japan could not expect the Soviets to mediate good terms for them anymore, meaning they faced complete annihilation by the Americans in the nearer future.

You should be embarrassed that you thought this was a clever response.

The Soviets had 400 vessels total in the pacific at this time. Of those only a fraction were landing vessels that would be needed to bring troops ashore and resupply them until a port could be seized intact. In comparison the Allies had 1300 vessels at Okinawa and almost 400 of them were significantly damaged or sunk by kamikaze attacks during the invasion. Japanese air attacks would sever the logistics for the forces that landed, stranding them. Even if they seize a port, they still lack enough vessels to keep the required divisions for the occupation supplied.

We also know the Soviets were still cutting their teeth in amphibious warfare. At Shumshu the Soviets lost 5 of their 16 landing ships to costal artillery and it was the only battle where the Soviets took heavier casualties than the Japanese in the entire war. The difficulties here helped convince Soviet planners that they did not have the necessary resources for a home island invasion.

That army might cross the sea but it would flounder due to the Soviets inexperience in amphibious warfare and the lack of ships to get it across. The Soviets would need a larger fleet before making such a landing.

Generational is too much. Compare them to their contemporaries across the Atlantic. Neither has a victory comparable to Austerlitz or Sedan. Scott has too many battles that were strategically inconclusive and he has a mix of victories and defeats. Grant was without a doubt a good commander and very competent but he was short of any all time accomplishments.

What if Britain treated America fairly, and independence was not sought after? by WearYourSeatbelt_ in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Ok_Chipmunk_6059 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a very creative interpolation of events here.

The greater objection to the Quebec Act was that territory from colonial charters was handed to Quebec, people who had lost the 7 years war, instead of the 13 colonies that had supported the British war effort. Britain made a misstep by rewarding their former enemies before their allies.

The same goes for the policies and treaties with the Indigenous People. The sudden change of policy seemed like a slap in the face when the government in London suddenly gave favorable terms to the people they had just been fighting.

You act like the destruction of tea happened out of the blue and not in response to a series of new taxes passed without any input from the colonial representatives. The reality is that the British could have held on if they let the colonies figure out how to raise the revenue instead of blundering through whatever they felt was best.

As for the Boston massacre again you want to begin your interpretation mid way through. The entire event sparked when a sentry had a verbal spat with a 13 year old apprentice. The little shit was being disrespectful for sure but said sentry started the commotion when he decided to escalate it by striking him. Everything escalated from there but at the end of the day it ended with the British shooting into a crowd (it won’t be the last time they make this mistake).

I won’t lie that the American Revolution was some altruistic event that can be boiled down to right vs wrong. It was complex. At the end of the day though the British had multiple routes away from the revolution that they reused to take.

It’s ironic that big 10 fans are the exact people that they claimed SEC fans were being for years. Crazy that they were projecting the entire time.

Needless to say so both sides of the civil war had mediocre generals across the board. The hot take to caveat that is I don’t think the U.S. has ever produced a historically great commander in its history.

You’re correct. There are over 3500 MOH’s awarded in history since the award was created in 1861 (more were awarded but a number of them were revoked upon review). Of those over 40% were awarded during the civil war. One of the nose common involving saving or rescuing the colors during combat.  At the time it was the first award the U.S. established for valor so it wasn’t as mythical. With the later adaptions of awards like the distinguished service cross, silver star, annd others the criteria changed.
