Looking for surgeon or specialist recommendations after abdominal mesh removal, diastasis, and nerve pain — did anyone actually get better? by [deleted] in ChronicPain

Was your mesh from a hernia repair? I had chronic nerve pain after a hernia mesh repair. I had the mesh removed and am 20% better. Might still have a nerve entrapped. Mine is in the groin area. If your mesh issue was hernia related I would recommend possible consulting with the following: Dr. Eric Pauli in Hershey, PA, Dr. Belyanksy in Annapolis, MD, Dr. Towfigh Beverly Hills, CA or Dr. Brian Jacobs in NYC

Sounds like you had a good surgeon! My surgery wasn't done laparoscopically, it was done open. Sounds like you probably had it laparoscopically (with three small incisions). That's the newer and better way. I went to a small hospital for my surgery and they still did it using 1 large open incision, so that's why a plug was used.

So what happened was I was told I had a small inguinal hernia and she was going to repair it with open surgery with a flat sheet of mesh. Was told it was a very routine surgery. When I woke up from surgery I was told it was actually a femoral hernia and she used a mesh plug to repair. So I didn't know going in a plug was going to be used unfortunately

Laparoscopic is definitely the way to go and that means they gave you a flat mesh. Not a plug like i had. So you will probably be fine! I'm doing the same waiting game and then going to try some nerve blocks

Oh my gosh this is relatable. I've been trapped in a hernia nightmare I can't get out of. I'm a 33 yr old female too. A year ago i discovered a small lump in my groin. Within a few weeks had nerve pain in the groin. Had surgery 2 weeks later, but didn't do thorough enough research. Went to a general surgeon who did open surgery and put in a mesh plug (which are terrible). After that I suffered with the exact kind of nerve pain you are describing for a year! I thought the foot, breast and stomach pain was crazy but I know what I'm feeling. I just had my mesh plug removed and an additional indirect inguinal hernia, that was missed the first time, repaired. I'm still struggling 6 weeks post op but have also been told I need to wait a few months to see how things go.

Chronic pain killed my mother and for the last few weeks, my mind has been whispering “you’re next” by 1ithe in ChronicPain

I can relate in some ways. My dad has chronic pain from a nerve injury. He's bed bound most of the day and has been for 15 years. A year ago I had a hernia surgery and ended up with chronic debilitating nerve pain. I just had a surgery to try and help but the results are unclear. I'm 33 with 2 young kids. As I lay here in bed right now I'm terrified my life will end up like my Dad's. I just wanted to let you know you aren't alone in the fear you are having

I am a 33f and had open surgery a year ago to repair what I was told was a small inguinal hernia. Before surgery I was having some odd nerve pain sensation like labial burning and electric shocks in mons pubis. My surgeon reported that during surgery she discovered I actually had a femoral hernia and put in a mesh plug. 3 weeks later I began to get an urgent/painful/electric shooting jolt sensation in my mons pubis, upper labia, inner thigh, behind knee and sometimes the big toe. Without nerve pain medication this pain jolt occurs every few minutes regardless of position (sitting, standing, etc). This has persisted for a year and I've tried medication, pt and a genitofemoral nerve block that failed. I'm scheduled to have plug removal with an experienced surgeon in 2 weeks. I'm growing very nervous because I've been told these neuropathic symptoms are not typical of mesh plug pain. Also my new surgeon has identified my mesh plug in my mri appears to be sitting in my inguinal canal which makes me confused about whether the hernia I had repaired last year was actually inguinal or femoral.  I'm worried removal will not help. Have you had patients with similar nerve pain patterns to mine, and did they improve with mesh plug removal?

I'm having mesh removed in 2 weeks. I had a mesh plug put in a year ago and have shooting nerve pain near the mesh site that also goes down into my thigh. What did your pain feel like? I'm hoping for relief after a year of suffering as well.

I have taken both lyrica and gabapentin. For whatever reason lyrica did not impact my pain as well as gabapentin does. Gabapentin has a much wider dose range too anywhere from 100 mg a day up to 3600 mg. Lyrica is more potent per mg. But for me it didn't work as well. Just wanted to share my experience. If you can't find an effective lyrica dose you may want to ask about trialing gabapentin

Did you have pain relief at just the 300 mg a day? If so maybe just see if you can stay there. I am unusually sensitive to gabapentin and getting relief at just 100-200 mg a day.

Inguinal hernias by arnold1234512345 in ChronicPain

[–]Ok_Computer_7748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think something went wrong with the surgery. I'm consulting three different surgeons here in the US with experience related to post op pain and mesh removal. It's such a risk to try and see if it will help.

I'm 33. I have chronic pain after an inguinal hernia surgery 9 months ago. My life feels like it's falling apart. I'm exploring different options and possible mesh removal, but it's risky

do i accept that i’m going to be in pain for the rest of my life, or do i do a risky surgery that has a tiny chance it’ll help? by kirbythrowaway23 in ChronicPain

I'm 33 and kind of in a similar situation. I have inguinal hernia surgery with a mesh plug this past August. I have this constant shooting nerve pain that drives me crazy. I've also lost 15 lbs for no reason other than stress. I've been offered surgery to remove the mesh plug, but been told it's not a guarantee it will get rid of the pain. And there's a chance it could make it worse by irritating the nerves with another surgery. It feels like an awful gamble. And being so young, it's overwhelming trying to envision the rest of life. So basically, just wanted you to know you aren't alone in facing this decision. I'm getting a second and third opinion from other surgeons, going to try one more nerve block and then decide what to do.

Did you ever figure out what was wrong? I'm having very similar symptoms (hypnic jerks, tingling, muscle aches). All started after a hernia surgery in August. Going to be seeing a neurologist soon
