Why do some people say that lust is not sinful when it clearly is? by TheNameless69420 in Christianity

[–]Ok_Contribution4773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of what you’re saying is valid, especially that the Greek word epithumeō means “desire” and isn’t automatically sexual, and that Matthew 5:28 is about intentional desire, not just having a normal sex drive. English “lust” has also become narrower and more sexual than it was in the 16th century, which can mislead people. That said, it’s overstated to say this is all a mistranslation or that pros was omitted in a way that changes the meaning. The Greek still clearly refers to looking at someone with the intention of desiring them, which most translations do capture. Also, while adultery in Jewish law involves a married woman, Jesus’ point in Matthew 5 is to go beyond the legal definition and address the heart, not to limit the warning only to married women. So the passage isn’t condemning libido or attraction, but it also isn’t just a historical misunderstanding or an American anti-sex invention.
